A Study Of The Pattern Of Scale Development In Salmo Clarkii Spilurus Cope, Josephine Hawrylko

Biology ETDs

One of the phases of fish investigation is to determine the pattern of scale development is fishes. The problem deals with a study of the gross development of scales and their distribution over the body in Salmo clarkii spilurus Cope, Rio Grande Cut-throat trout. "This trout is known only from the upper Rio Grande basin and southward into the mountains of Chihuahua." The Cut-throat trout is a member of the Family Salmonidae and often goes under such common names as black spotted trout, mountain trout, New Mexico native trout, red-throat trout and various other titles.

Bin-Cured Versus Field-Cured Alfalfa Hay For Dairy Heifers, Marshal C. Winton Aug 1947

Bin-Cured Versus Field-Cured Alfalfa Hay For Dairy Heifers, Marshal C. Winton

Masters Theses

INTRODUCTION:

This study was undertaken for the purpose of comparing the nutritive value of bin-cured and field-cured alfalfa hay, using actual feeding trials with dairy heifers.

Any study involving the production and preservation of more and better hay has great economic importance. Shepherd and others (21), in discussing the losses of hay from a national standpoint, state that:

The uncertain weather conditions that frequently exist while hay is being made, particularly in the humid sections of the country, are responsible for variations in the quality of the hay and for large losses of nutrients during harvesting. Conservative estimates indicate that …

Effects On Different Intensities Of Utilization Upon The Underground Parts Of Short Grasses In West Central Kansas, Farrel Branson Jul 1947

Effects On Different Intensities Of Utilization Upon The Underground Parts Of Short Grasses In West Central Kansas, Farrel Branson

Master's Theses

Work on root systems of forage plants has indicated that a knowledge of root relationships is fully as important in determining the actual conditions of ranges or pastures as is knowledge of the effects of grazing upon aboveground portions of plants. This is especially true in arid or semiarid regions since plants of these areas are frequently subjected to long periods of drought, high temperatures, and high wind velocities. Some xeric plants have a thickened cuticular layer, stomates that open only at night, and other mechanisms that prevent loss of water that is absorbed by the roots. However, in plants …

A Descriptive Analysis Of The Musculature And Osseous Systems Of The Kangaroo Rat, Dipodomys Ordii, Virgil Mathis Jul 1947

A Descriptive Analysis Of The Musculature And Osseous Systems Of The Kangaroo Rat, Dipodomys Ordii, Virgil Mathis

Master's Theses

The kangaroo rats constitute the only genus, Dipodomys, of the subfamily Heteromyinae, now extant . There is fossil evidence of two other genera which are now extinct. The kangaroo rat, Dipodomys ordii richardsoni, is one of the common rodents of western Kansas . According to Hibbard (3, p. 76), "Its range extends northeastward along the Kansas river into Riley County." These animals are easily distinguished from other rodents by their long tail, long hind legs and feet, small hands, fur lined external cheek pouches, and their saltating method of locomotion. These rodents are seldom seen by the casual observer, being …

Life History Studies Of The Mouse, Peromyscus Truei Nevadensis, Lowell S. Miller Jun 1947

Life History Studies Of The Mouse, Peromyscus Truei Nevadensis, Lowell S. Miller

Theses and Dissertations

Peromyscus truel's a fairly common inhabitant of the upper sonaranlife zone of the Western States. It is an excellent laboratory anlmal with the limitation that captivity must be accompanied by forced activlty, in order to keep the animals within the limits of normal activity. This mouse is polyestrous and breeds from early spring to late fall. Observations have shown pregnancy in late September and in early February. It is the writer's belief that ovulation in the ovary occurs only when copulation has taken lace, because corpora lutea has only been found in pregnant or lactating females. The evidence is scanty …

Pastures Of Western Kansas In Relation To Intensity Of Utilization In Past Years, Gerald W. Tomanek May 1947

Pastures Of Western Kansas In Relation To Intensity Of Utilization In Past Years, Gerald W. Tomanek

Master's Theses

Short grass pastures vary in their ability to produce forage for livestock consumption. One of the reasons for this difference is a variation in the degree of utilization in past years. Forage production of short grass ranges has been reduced to about one-half after only a few decades of improper grazing; therefore the problem of proper utilization is becoming more important every year (Forest Service, 1936). When the settlers first came to western Kansas they found an almost complete cover of native vegetation and during the first few years only a small portion of the range land was cultivated. With …

The Cost Of Producing Eggs And The Egg Feed Ratio In Utah 1929-'46, Emer E. Broadbent May 1947

The Cost Of Producing Eggs And The Egg Feed Ratio In Utah 1929-'46, Emer E. Broadbent

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Commercial egg production in Utah has developed largely since 1920. Prior to that time most farms had some chickens but the eggs were either used at home or consumed on the local markets. What few commercial poultry farms there were also supplied local markets. It has been estimated that the total egg production in the stat was just about equal to the consumption within the state. Soon after1920 however, egg production on a commercial basis began and thereafter expanded rapidly for a time.

A Taxonomic Study Of The Scolytidae (Coleoptera) Of The Logan Canyon Area Of Utah, Stephen L. Wood May 1947

A Taxonomic Study Of The Scolytidae (Coleoptera) Of The Logan Canyon Area Of Utah, Stephen L. Wood

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

In spite of the great economic importance of north American Scolytidae, many taxonomic descriptions remain inadequate for the identification of species, and existing keys have been made obsolete by the recent description of new species. To bring these keys up to date and make them useful to students and practical foresters, detailed studies of the morphological structure of the various species are necessary. The purpose of the present investigation has been to clarify and revise existing keys and to describe briefly the species of Scolytidae occurring in the Logan Canyon area of Utah. The following keys and descriptions will be …

Membership Relations Of The Utah Poultry And Farmers' Cooperative, Glen T. Nelson May 1947

Membership Relations Of The Utah Poultry And Farmers' Cooperative, Glen T. Nelson

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Commercial egg production in Utah has developed gradually since 1920. Production of eggs increased from 142 million in 1924 to 433 million eggs in 1946. The percentage of total farm income of the state derived from the poultry industry increased from 5.3 percent in 1924 to 23.1 percent in 1946 and at the present time constitutes the largest income of any farm enterprise in this area. Factors influencing this development are: 1. High prices resulting from the war period of 1917 to 1920 followed by the depression period when prices were low. 2. The organization of cooperative egg-marketing associations. 3. …

A Study Of A Heron Nesting Colony, Linden J. Leatham May 1947

A Study Of A Heron Nesting Colony, Linden J. Leatham

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Herons are well known because of their gregarious nesting habits. Like many others of the lower orders of birds they nest together in pure or mixed colonies of many different combinations and under diverse living conditions. The population of different colonies may vary from a few pairs to many thousands of pairs depending upon the nature and extent of the breeding area, the food supply available and the protection afforded either by natural or artificial means.

In Utah and adjacent areas of bordering states, many types of heron associations have been studied and reported by ornithological workers. Breeding colonies of …

The Measurement Of Agricultural Production In The Utah From 1920 To 1946, Owen L. Brough Jr. May 1947

The Measurement Of Agricultural Production In The Utah From 1920 To 1946, Owen L. Brough Jr.

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

As agricultural leaders become increasingly aware of the economics involved in the production and marketing of agricultural products, there develops an increased need for more accurate and more complete methods of measuring agricultural production. This need is not only for the satisfactory measurement of the physical production of a given crop, but is also for a unit of measurement that will make possible a comparison of the production of individual enterprises and groups of enterprises for a given year and from year to year. Because the production of many crops, and livestock and livestock products are customarily measured according to …

Variable Factors In The Determination Of Fat And Moisture In Cheddar Cheese, William C. Winder May 1947

Variable Factors In The Determination Of Fat And Moisture In Cheddar Cheese, William C. Winder

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The rapid growth of the dairy industry which began in the latter half of the nineteenth century necessitated the development of chemical tests for determining the composition of dairy products. Chemists devoted much study and labor in devising methods which would be both accurate and rapid. As a result of these researches a large number of tests were developed. Many of the methods possessed considerable merit and a few were so satisfactory that the rest did not come into general use. The basic principles of all the tests now in use were discovered between 1880 and 1890.

A Survey Of Intestinal Protozoa At The Stockton State Hospital : Stockton, California, Lawrence Melvin Gholz Jan 1947

A Survey Of Intestinal Protozoa At The Stockton State Hospital : Stockton, California, Lawrence Melvin Gholz

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

During the past months much has been published in periodicals, especially those of a pictorial nature, which discredits institutions established for the care of' the mentally ill throughout the nation. Many articles have been presented which show an intelligent approach, but the majority of these treatments are by those who are basing too much on a very narrow experience. For example, one news magazine recently printed a picture of a mental patient in institutional garb sitting on a bench in one of the poses most characteristic of a catatonic. The caption of the picture seemed to ignore this significant fact …

Contributions To The Study On Helminth Fauna Of Dillon Beach, Francis C. Gale Jan 1947

Contributions To The Study On Helminth Fauna Of Dillon Beach, Francis C. Gale

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Studies on trematodes of marine organisms of the Pacific Coast have been of a scattered and fragmentary nature. J. Stafford (1904) collected and described a number of trematodes from fishes of the north Pacific, but, in his historical survey, Manter (1926) fails to mention specifically any studies covering the waters south of Canada. More recently, in the United States, several contributions to the field have been made by Dr. John E. Guberlet at the University of Washington and at the College of the Pacific by Dr. Alden Noble, under whose guidance this study was made. James Park (1937) revised the …

Some Microtechnical Experiments And Recommendations Of New Prestaining Techniques, Edward D. Wood Jan 1947

Some Microtechnical Experiments And Recommendations Of New Prestaining Techniques, Edward D. Wood

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The preparation and staining of biological structures for microscopic examination is of extreme importance to the science of biology since almost all phases of biological advance are, at least to some degree, dependent upon microtechnical methods. Nevertheless, research workers and students of biological science are sooner or later impressed with the inadequacy of many of the microtechnical methods used by them and their colleagues. In the field of microtechnique there is difficulty in finding standardized methods which will uniformly bring optimum results. Throughout most procedures there seem to be variables over which no definite controls have been established. Microtechniques have, …

History Of The Cotton Mission And Cotton Culture In Utah, Ivan J. Barrett Jan 1947

History Of The Cotton Mission And Cotton Culture In Utah, Ivan J. Barrett

Theses and Dissertations

The writer, being interested in the agricultural project of cotton growing in early Dixie, and finding scarcely anything written on the subject, has gone into the original sources, histories, journals, diaries, etc., and found a reservoir of enlightenment regarding cotton culture in Utah's Dixie. He has tried to assemble from the most important sources, an informative yet interesting study of cotton culture in Utah. The writer in no wise pretends to have exhausted the subject, nor to have reached all the sources. Many of those early cotton growers who did most to produce this staple, kept no record of their …
