Fat-Free Mass Index In A Large Sample Of Collegiate American Football Athletes, Jennifer B. Fields, Margaret T. Jones, Adam Feit, Meghan K. Magee, Nicholas M. Kuhlman, Andrew R. Jagim

International Journal of Exercise Science

International Journal of Exercise Science 17(4): 129-139, 2024. High levels of fat-free mass (FFM) are favorable for athletes and are related to sport performance. However, fat-free mass index (FFMI), which includes adjustments for height, may offer a better way to characterize FFM beyond raw values. As FFMI is understudied relative to sport, the purpose of the current study was to assess position and age group differences in FFMI among collegiate American football players. National Collegiate Athletic Association DIII (n=111) football players underwent body composition assessment via bioelectrical impedance analysis. FFMI was calculated by dividing FFM by height squared. One-way analyses …

Metabolic Flexibility And Weight Status May Contribute To Inter-Individual Changes In Breastmilk Lipid Content In Response To An Acute Bout Of Exercise: Preliminary Findings From A Pilot Study, Jill M. Maples, Charlotte Mccarley, Maire M. Blankenship, Kristin Yoho, K.Paige Johnson, Kimberly B. Fortner, Rachel A. Tinius

International Journal of Exercise Science

International Journal of Exercise Science 13(2): 1756-1769, 2020. The purposes of this pilot study were to describe changes in breastmilk lipid content in response to an acute bout of moderate intensity exercise and to explore maternal metabolic health factors, including metabolic flexibility, which may impact this change. A cross-sectional, observational, pilot study design was performed in 14 women between 4 and 6 months postpartum. Whole body fasting lipid oxidation was assessed, a standardized high-fat breakfast was consumed, and lipid oxidation was again measured 120-minutes post-meal. Metabolic flexibility was determined by comparing the change in lipid oxidation before and after the …

A Comparative Analysis Of Army Body Composition Standards For Women, Adam G. Tedford, Veronika Pribyslavska, Lance G. Bryant, Eric M. Scudamore

International Journal of Exercise Science

International Journal of Exercise Science 13(7): 1275-1282, 2020. The aim of this study was to compare body fat percentage (BF%) of women measured using the U.S. Army standard body composition assessment (ABC) and two common laboratory measures of body composition to evaluate the efficacy of ABC within this population. The BF% of 27 women (21.5 ± 1.8 years) was assessed using the 7-site skinfold, air plethysmography, and ABC measurements. The initial physical fitness test (IPFT) was used to determine if participants met the criteria required for admittance into basic combat training. A repeated measures ANOVA identified differences in BF% between …

Passion For Exercise: Passion's Relationship To General Fitness Indicators And Exercise Addiction, Alexander Bureau, Lindsey C. Blom, Jocelyn E. Bolin, Paul R. Nagelkirk Jan 2019

Passion For Exercise: Passion's Relationship To General Fitness Indicators And Exercise Addiction, Alexander Bureau, Lindsey C. Blom, Jocelyn E. Bolin, Paul R. Nagelkirk

International Journal of Exercise Science

International Journal of Exercise Science 12(5): 122-135, 2019. Research into the Dualistic Model of Passion (DMP) has suggested that a harmonious passion for an activity is related to more positive outcomes (e.g., higher well-being and satisfaction with life), and an obsessive passion for an activity is related to negative and less adaptive outcomes (e.g., lower self-esteem and burnout; 37, 40, 43). The current study demonstrated differences between passion types (i.e., harmonious passion, obsessive passion, no passion) in terms of physical fitness, risk of exercise addiction, frequency of exercise, and perceptions of exercise. Sixty-one college students from a large, Midwestern university …
