Jealousy? Or Just Hostility Toward Other Dogs? The Risks Of Jumping To Conclusions, James A. Serpell Jan 2018

Jealousy? Or Just Hostility Toward Other Dogs? The Risks Of Jumping To Conclusions, James A. Serpell

Animal Sentience

Cook et al. (2018) provide a fascinating demonstration of amygdala activation in dogs when they witnessed their owners giving food to another (fake) dog, but not when they placed food in a bucket. Dogs’ neurological responses were positively correlated with their reported levels of ‘dog-directed aggression’ as measured by the C-BARQ, and dogs with initially strong amygdala responses habituated on subsequent trials. The authors interpret their findings as possible evidence for an emotion akin to jealousy in dogs. However, alternate interpretations involving either dog aggression/fear or emotional responses to food seem more plausible and avoid the welfare risks associated with …

Ocular Ultrasonographic Evaluation Of Cataractous And Pseudophakic Eyes In Dogs, Shriram Ganesan, Ramani Chandrasekhara Iyer Jan 2018

Ocular Ultrasonographic Evaluation Of Cataractous And Pseudophakic Eyes In Dogs, Shriram Ganesan, Ramani Chandrasekhara Iyer

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

Ocular B-mode ultrasonography is one of the noninvasive, rapid diagnostic imaging techniques indicated in canine cataract patients to evaluate the posterior segment of the eye. This study was conducted on twelve eyes of dogs with a history of cataract, which were scanned under topical anesthesia. The preoperative and postoperative ultrasonographic biometry, and ultrasonographic features of the lens, intraocular lens (IOL), and posterior segment were recorded. There was a significant difference between pre- and postphacoemulsification mean value of the axial length of globe and anterior chamber depth. The normal ultrasonographic features of the 2-hydroxy-ethyl-methylacrylate IOL was observed in vitro by placing …

Bilateral Radial Carpal Bone Luxation And Its Treatment In A Dog, Didar Aydin Kaya Jan 2018

Bilateral Radial Carpal Bone Luxation And Its Treatment In A Dog, Didar Aydin Kaya

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

Radial carpal bone luxation is rarely encountered in dogs. A literature review did not reveal any case of bilateral radial carpal bone luxation or its treatment. In the current case study, the process and result of the treatment of a dog with bilateral radial carpal bone luxation, brought to the İstanbul University Faculty of Veterinary Medicine?s Department of Surgery is presented. Treatment of luxation was achieved by using screws and cerclage wire. The long-term follow-up of this patient was limited to only 2 months since the dog was not brought back to the clinic.

Jealousy In Dogs? Evidence From Brain Imaging, Peter Cook, Ashley Prichard, Mark Spivak, Gregory S. Berns Jan 2018

Jealousy In Dogs? Evidence From Brain Imaging, Peter Cook, Ashley Prichard, Mark Spivak, Gregory S. Berns

Animal Sentience

Domestic dogs are highly social and have been shown to be sensitive not only to the actions of humans and other dogs but to the interactions between them. We used the C-BARQ scale to estimate dogs’ aggressiveness, and we used noninvasive brain imaging (fMRI) to measure activity in their amygdala (an area involved in aggression). More aggressive dogs had more amygdala activation data while watching their caregiver give food to a realistic fake dog than when they put the food in a bucket. This may have some similarity to human jealousy, adding to a growing body of evidence that differences …

The First Case Of Traumatic Myiasis Caused By Musca Domestica In A Dog In Konya, Turkey, Bi̇lal Di̇k, Ceylan İlhan, Onur Ceylan, Elgi̇n Orçum Uzunlu

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

A case of traumatic myiasis caused by the Musca domestica (Linnaeus 1758) housefly was detected in a dog in Konya, Turkey. A 4-year-old Kangal breed dog injured in a traffic accident was brought to the surgery clinic of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine at Selçuk University in Konya, Turkey for treatment. Several dipterous larvae were collected from the wound of the dog, placed in a petri dish with 70% ethanol, and sent to the parasitology laboratory for identification. The larvae were examined macroscopically. The specimens were identified as third-instar larvae of M. domestica. This is the first report of traumatic …

Severe Granulomatous Hepatitis Caused By Capillaria Hepatica In A Puppy, Ayli̇n Alasonyalilar Demi̇rer, Ahmet Akkoç, Bayram Şenli̇k, İbrahi̇m Taci̇ Cangül Jan 2018

Severe Granulomatous Hepatitis Caused By Capillaria Hepatica In A Puppy, Ayli̇n Alasonyalilar Demi̇rer, Ahmet Akkoç, Bayram Şenli̇k, İbrahi̇m Taci̇ Cangül

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

This report describes the inflammation caused by Capillaria hepatica in the liver of a female stray dog of approximately 2 months old for the first time in Turkey. Histopathological examination revealed severe granulomatous hepatitis with occasional adult nematodes and abundant eggs in the hepatic parenchyma. The present case differs from the other capillariasis cases by the age of the dog and the presence of mature female parasites and severe inflammation.
