Politics and science do not always go hand-in-hand. Nowhere was this more clear than in the Flint Water Crisis. Negligence towards growing levels of lead poisoning in drinking water led to incredibly deleterious effects on Flint's citizens. The chemistry of equilibrium and the shortcomings of local leaders led to Flint's water becoming a crisis.

Poly (vinyl alcohol) (PVA)/ poly ethylene glycol (PEG) with different concentration were prepared by electrospinning and chemically crosslinked using glutaraldehyde (GA) to improve the water resistance of nanofibers. The effects of the different concentration of PEG on the solution properties of PVA/PEG/GA blends and on the morphology of the resultant nanofibers were studied. The surface morphology and the average diameter of the blend nanofibers are dependent on initially added PEG concentrations. The effects of the glutaraldehyde on the morphology, average diameter, contact angle, mechanical properties and swelling properties of the PVA/PEG nanofibers were examined. Acute kidney injury (AKI) signifiesfrequentcomplicationaftercardiacsurgeryusingcardiopulmonarybypass(CPB).AKIraises the risk for prospective chronic kidney disease and renal failure, with its related mortality and morbidity. Traditional diagnostic approaches to AKI diagnosis such as changes in serum creatinine and blood urea was delayed by 2 to 3 days after CPB. Early detection of acute kidney injury (AKI) after cardiac surgery may improve patient’s outcome, potentially reducing mortality, hospital length of stay, and costs. The spirooxindolo pyrrolidine frameworks form core units of many naturally occurring molecules possess significant pharmacological activities. The [3+2] cycloaddition reactions of azomethine ylides has been realized through multi-component reaction (MCR) affording regiospecific spiroindoline-3, 2’-pyrrolidine derivatives. The reactivity of the spiroindoline (increase EHOMO value) has been depended upon electron repelling and attracting groups. The behavior of spiroindoline towards carbon electrophile and nitrogen nucleophile can be investigated. All compound structures are fully supported by spectroscopic data and elemental analysis.The antioxidant activity for these synthesized compounds could be expected that highly antioxidant activity was with compounds which proved to possess high HOMO values

Synthesis Of Polyfunctionally Substituted Heterocyclic Compounds Derived From 5-Cinnamoylamino-2-Cyanomethyl-1,3,4-Thiadiazole, Mahmoud Mahmoud, Manal El-Shahawi, Fatma Abu El-Azm, Mohamed Abdeen

Cinnamoyl isothiocyanate 1 was reacted with 2-cyanoethanoic acid hydrazide 2 to afford 1-cyanoacetyl-4-substituted thiosemicarbazide 3 which on treatment with a mixture of glacial acetic acid and acetic anhydride gave the desired 5-cinnamoylamino-2-cyanomethyl-1,3,4-thiadiazole 4. Compound 4 was subjected to react with aromatic aldehydes, phenylisothiocyanate, carbon disulphide and arylidene malononitrile to give coumarin 5, thiazolidines 8,9 and 1,3,4-thiadiazolo[3,2-a]pyridine 13 derivatives. The structures of all synthesized compounds were ascertained by spectral and analytical data.

Enaminonitrile derivatives 1a,b were used as a versatile material for the synthesis of different heterocyclic compounds such as pyrazoloacetamide, pyrazolopyrimidinone, pyrazolobenzamide, pyrazolopyrimidines, pyrazolothiazinethiones, pyrazolopyrimidinedithiones, pyrazolocyanoacetamide, pyrazolopyrazoles, tetrazolopyrazoles, pyrazolotetrazolopyrimidines, and pyrazolotetrazolodiazepine derivatives, through the reaction with different electrophiles and nucleophiles. The newly synthesized compound were tested against gram positive and gram negative bacteria, fungi and two human tumor cell lines.

Alkyd resins are considered modified polyester resins, which may be modified with many chemicals such as polybasic acids, polyhydric alcohols and/or fatty acids to produce resins with different properties and give the final surface coating formulations wide performance range. A simple approach to the synthesis metal complexes and copper, zinc nano particles size (CuNPs, ZnNPs) of novel Schiff base of sulfonamide ligand (HL) resulted from the condensation of sulfametrole [N'-(4-methoxy-1,2,5-thiadiazol-3-yl]sulfanilamide and 1-(2-Furanyl) ethanon. The metal complexes and copper, zinc nano particles size (CuNPs, ZnNPs) of HL ligand were synthesized and characterized using different physico-chemical studies as elemental analyses, mass spectra, conductivity measurement, UV-vis Spectra, solid reflectance, IR spectra,,1H NMR spectra, magnetic susceptibility, thermal analyses (TGA and DTA), (TEM) Transmission Electron Microscope and their microbial and anticancer activities . For the past five years, Dr. Jennifer Nielson has conducted research in Kampala, Uganda, located in south-central Africa. I have been able to join her for two of the five years, including this past year for nearly three weeks in August. Our research focuses on teaching basic chemistry principle that are difficult to comprehend by using experiments that demonstrate the general concept of atomic structures and functions.
