Samples were collected from 7 different stations between January 2002 and December 2002 with a view to identifying the littoral benthic fauna (Oligochaeta and Chironomidae) of Lake Kovada, located in Southern Anatolia. As a result of this study, 35 species were determined, comprising 15 species from Oligochaeta (8 Naidid and 7 Tubificid), and 20 species from Chironomidae (4 Tanypodin, 2 Orthocladiin, 12 Chironomini and 2 Tanytarsin). Species richness varied between 11 and 19. The littoral Oligochaete and Chironomidae fauna of Lake Kovada was dominated by the widely distributed Potamothrix hammoniensis, Tubifex tubifex, Limnodrilus hoffmeisteri and Nais communis (Oligochaeta), and Cryptochironomus …

Test For Acute Toxicity Of Copper, Cadmium, And Mercury In Five Marine Species, Ermelinda Prato, Francesca Biandolino, Christian Scardicchio

Turkish Journal of Zoology

: The acute toxicity of copper (Cu), cadmium (Cd), and mercury (Hg) to the marine invertebrates Gammarus aequicauda, Corophium insidiosum, Idotea baltica, Sphaeroma serratum, and Mytilus galloprovincialis were evaluated by static bioassays and calculation of the LC_{50} (lethality concentration for 50%). Hg was more toxic to Gammarus aequicauda, Corophium insidiosum, Idotea baltica, Sphaeroma serratum, and Mytilus galloprovincialis than Cu and Cd. Cu was the least toxic of the metals tested.

Turkish Journal of Zoology

Forty-seven Darevskia armeniaca specimens collected from 2 different localities in Ardahan were examined in terms of pholidosis characters, morphometric measurements and colour-pattern features. The 2 populations were differentiated from one another in terms of the number of supraciliar plates (left-right) (SCPa-SCPb), supralabial plates (left-right) (SRLa-SRLb) and transversal series of ventral plates (TVP) according to the results of the Mann-Whitney U test. An independent t-test based on morphometric measurements revealed significant differences in terms of the head index (HI) between the 2 populations. Regarding pholidosis characters, morphometric measurements and colour-pattern features, specimens collected from the 2 localities showed a similarity to …

Testing The Randomness Of The Samples Of Body Size In A Replicated Design In Drosophila Melanogaster Populations From The Eastern Mediterranean, Ergi̇ Deni̇z Özsoy, Ali̇ Ni̇hat Bozcuk

Turkish Journal of Zoology

Strong body size correlates, wing and thorax lengths, of Drosophila melanogaster populations from the Eastern Mediterranean were measured and tested for the presence of autocorrelation, i.e. nonrandom alternation of individual measurements within a sample. The experimental design was a laboratory setup aiming at overall homogeneity in fly culture conditions, which was achieved. A t-test, first proposed by Von Neumann, was performed for the autocorrelation analysis in each population. No significant autocorrelation was detectable, indicating very low bias in the experimental design for nonrandom picking of individuals for measurements. The test is suggested for routine use in studies before any inference …

Turkish Journal of Zoology

Levantine vipers, Macrovipera lebetina (Linnaeus), from Cyprus and southern Anatolia were investigated comparatively regarding morphology, hemipenes and electrophoresis patterns of venom proteins. There were discernible differences between these compared features of the 2 populations. In the light of these differences, it is concluded that the southern Anatolian population should not be identified as the nominate subspecies M. l. lebetina (Linnaeus), which lives in Cyprus. The study material from northeastern Anatolia did not allow us to make a good comparison between M. lebetina from southern and NE Anatolia.

In this study, age, growth, and sex ratio of 342 golden grey mullets, which were caught in fish traps during fishing season were determined. The samples were between 7.5 and 39.5 cm in length and were between < 1 and 4 years old. The length-weight relationship for this population was calculated as W = 0.01*L^{2.93}, L_{\infinity} = 43.2 cm, K = 0.33 yr^{-1}, and t_o = -0.30 yr. The male:female ratio of the population was 1:1.87 and first maturity was at the age of one year for both sexes.
