Detection Of Listeria Monocytogenes By Using Pcr In Helix Pomatia, Şükrü Kirkan, Ergün Ö. Göksoy, Osman Kaya

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

The detection of Listeria monocytogenes in Helix pomatia, both raw and cooked is presented here. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) is a rapid procedure with both sensitivity and specificity for quick detection and identification of Listeria monocytogenes from raw and cooked Helix pomatia. A total of 30 bags (10 g each) of H. pomatia samples were investigated for the Listeria monocytogenes inlB gene with the PCR method. PCR amplification products demonstrated that 18 of the 30 samples showed positive reactions to Listeria monocytogenes in the PCR. All PCR positive samples showed specific amplification of the 343 bp fragment for Listeria monocytogenes.

In computer-assisted surgical applications, reconstruction of 3-D morphological peculiarities are required. Herein, we present a geometric modeling of the separate intestinal sections of the canine. The intestine of the dog was considered a tubular shape along a special curve. Seven male Turkish shepherd dogs were used for the modeling study. The length (cm) and diameter (mm) of the intestines were measured with digital calipers and formulated. These models were then compared to their original photographs. Antigenic Diversity Of Bovine Viral Diarrhoea Viruses (Bvdv) Isolated In Turkey, Kadi̇r Yeşi̇lbağ, İbrahi̇m Burgu

Sixty BVDV field strains isolated from different regions of Turkey were antigenically characterised with a panel of 16 monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) specific to viral proteins E2 and NS2-3. MAb recognition patterns were detected by an indirect peroxidase-linked antibody assay and data were subjected to computer analysis for discussing herd specificity of viral strains isolated from immunotolerant, persistently infected (IPI) cattle. For that purpose, phylogenic and statistical analyses were performed. A high level of antigenic diversity was detected among the isolates. This study was carried out to determine the effects of homofermentative lactic acid bacterial inoculants on the fermentation and aerobic stability characteristics of low dry matter corn silages. Corn was harvested at the milk stage. Inoculant-1188 (Pioneer^®, USA; Inoculant A) and Maize-All (Alltech, UK; Inoculant B) were used as homofermentative lactic acid bacterial inoculants. Inoculants were applied to silages 1.5 x 10^6 colony forming units/g levels. Silages with no additive served as controls. A seroepidemiological study on Ehrlichia canis infection was performed in 16 dogs in a kennel in the region of Plovdiv in Bulgaria. For this purpose, anti-E. canis antibodies were detected by the indirect immunofluorescence antibody test. The results showed that 75% of the dogs examined were positive to E. canis. The antibody titres 1:100, 1:200 and 1:400 were detected.

The purpose of this study was to determine whether subconjunctival administration of enrofloxacin could ameliorate a herd outbreak of infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis (IBK) and to compare the efficacy of this regimen with the efficacy of subconjunctival administration of a combination of penicillin+streptomycin. The calves were assigned to 1 of 3 groups at the beginning of the study, and were examined 3 times weekly for 4 weeks. Calves in group 1 (n = 12) were treated with the subconjunctival administration of a combination of penicillin+streptomycin. This study was conducted to measure selected haematological parameters in Holstein cattle naturally infected with Theileria annulata. Haematological analysis indicated significant decreases in red blood cell count, haematocrit value, haemoglobin amount, mean corpuscular haemoglobin concentration, and white blood cell, lymphocyte, neutrophil, monocyte, eosinophil, and basophil counts. On the other hand, significant increases were seen in mean corpuscular volume and marked reticulocytosis in infected animals compared to the animals in the control (uninfected) group. Secondary data from different sources were used to examine the changes in red meat prices in Turkey between 1976 and 1989 taking account of the impacts of inflation and red meat imports during that period. It is observed that in current prices a higher price increase was realized in red meat prices compared to the fattening feed prices in the period 1976-1999. When the effects of inflation and purchasing power of money are taken into account, it is determined that red meat prices rose at an increasing rate, whereas feed prices decreased after 1995. The objective of this study was to determine the occurrence and the enumeration of Clostridium perfringens in ground poultry and burgers using the MPN technique and selected biochemical tests, including acid phosphatase and reverse-CAMP tests. Forty raw frozen ground poultry and 40 frozen poultry burger samples were purchased from different poultry processing plants in Turkey, between June and December 2000. This study was conducted to determine the effects of soybean meal (SBM) treated with formaldehyde on rumen fermentation pattern, microbial protein synthesis, amount of by-pass protein, and amino acid absorption from small intestines. The objective of this study is to relationship between the somatic cell count (SCC), milk production and the morphologic traits of udder in the herds of Black-and-White cattle. The data included the test day records of milk and SCC, type evaluation of 2012 Black-and-White cows of the first lactation in 143 Lithuanian herds. This study was conducted to determine the serum Cu, Zn, Se and Fe concentrations at 60, 100, and 150 days of pregnancy and at 45 days of parturition in twin and single pregnant sheep. A total of 30 pregnant Akkaraman sheep in 2 groups (15 single pregnancies, 15 twin pregnancies), aged 3-5 years and weighing 40-50 kg were used. The blood samples were analyzed for serum Cu, Zn, Se and Fe concentrations. Protein bands of excretory/secretory (E/S) antigens of Dicrocoelium dendriticum were determined using SDS-PAGE and Western blotting. The E/S antigens were prepared from live adult D. dendriticum, which were obtained from slaughtered sheep at a local abattoir. In the SDS-PAGE analysis of D. dendriticum E/S antigen, 9 protein bands with molecular weights varying between 6 and 66 kDa with Coomassie staining and 14 bands between 6 and 205 kDa with silver staining were detected. The objectives of this study were to identify staphylococci isolated from different animal clinical samples, to examine some of the virulence factors in the isolates, to determine relationships between these virulence factors and coagulase positive Staphylococcus (CoPS)/coagulase negative Staphylococcus (CoNS) strains. A total of 180 strains of Staphylococcus spp. were isolated from bovine mastitis, dogs with otitis externa and chickens with various infections. The isolates were identified as S. aureus (29.4%), S. hyicus (16.7%), S. intermedius (3.9%), S. chromogenes (16.1%), S. lentus (13.3%), S. epidermidis (11.1%), S. simulans (7.8%) and S. haemolyticus (1.7%). The effect of refrigerated storage at 1 ± 0.3 ºC on vitamin E level, fatty acid composition and lipid oxidation of fillets was studied in 3 groups of rainbow trout fed diets supplemented with increasing levels (100, 300 and 500 mg kg^{-1} diet, respectively) of \alpha-tocopherol acetate as antioxidant. The effects of different levels of dietary vitamin E on the arginase activity of the hepatopancreas, gills and muscle of freshwater crayfish (Astacus leptodactylus) were investigated. The control diet contained approximately 37.41% crude protein on a dry-weight basis and 3.25 kcal g^{-1} gross energy. The diet ingredients contributed 65.83 mg kg^{-1} vitamin E to the control diet. A total of 288 dairy cattle from 4 different closed barns were sampled in order to investigate the presence of bovine viral diarrhoea virus (BVDV) infection. Based on the data gathered from neutralisation peroxidase-linked antibody (NPLA) tests, which were conducted to detect BVDV antibodies, all of the barns monitored previously had the infection; the rates of seropositive animals were between 44% and 100%. Overall, the results obtained from Aydın province showed that 248 of the 288 dairy cows (86%) monitored were seropositive. The Effects Of Red Pepper, Marigold Flower, And Synthetic Astaxanthin On Pigmentation, Growth, And Proximate Composition Of Penaeus Semisulcatus, Mustafa Göçer, Mahmut Yanar, Meti̇n Kumlu, Yasemen Yanar

Shrimps with an initial weight of 11.10 ± 0.26 g were fed diets supplemented with 6.6% red pepper (RP), 2.4% marigold flower (MF), and 100 mg/kg synthetic astaxanthin (SA), each of which contained 100 mg/kg total carotenoid, and a control diet (BD), without carotenoid supplement for 60 days. Dietary carotenoid sources did not significantly affect the growth of the shrimps (P > 0.05). SA supplementation yielded the highest survival rate (92%), followed by RP (82%) and the other diets (75%) (P < 0.05). All dietary carotenoid sources provided higher carotenoid accumulation compared to the control group (P < 0.05), but the difference between them was not significant (P > 0.05). The structure of postovulatory follicles and the levels of ovarian 11-dehydrocorticosterone (11-DHC), estradiol-17\beta (E_2), 17\alpha-hydroxyprogesterone (17\alpha -OH-P), and progesterone (P), before and after spawning, were studied in Chalcalburnus tarichi. It was observed that postovulatory follicles are characterized by a highly vascular thecal layer and hypertrophied granulosa cells containing dense smooth endoplasmic reticulum, many large mitochondria with tubular cristae, and lipid droplets. Ovary 11-DHC level was low in the pre- and post-spawning periods (38.3 ± 4.9-22.3 ± 2.6 ng/ml). The level of E_2 was 216.8 ± 31.1 ng/ml before spawning. We investigated the effect of ATP-MgCl_2 on myocardial hemodynamics and metabolism. The study included 12 mongrel dogs that were randomly divided into 2 groups: the control and the ATP-MgCl_2 (study) groups. Following a right thoracotomy, the left anterior descending artery was ligated for 15 min and then reperfusion was performed. After the ischemic period, cardiopulmonary bypass was initiated and the aorta was cross-clamped. Follicular development, ovulation and corpora lutea formation in a bitch were monitored daily by ultrasonography using a 8-MHz linear transducer. These findings were compared with vaginal cytology and changes in the peripheral serum concentrations of oestradiol-17\beta and progesterone. The follicles were identified as anechoic spherical structures on day 6 of prooestrus. The numbers of follicles imaged on day 6 of prooestrus were 3 on the left ovary and 3 on the right ovary. The aim of this study was to investigate serum iron parameters, and copper and iron deficiency anemia in ewes infected with gastro-intestinal parasites. This study was conducted with 60 pregnant Akkaraman ewes. In the statistical analyses, values obtained from both parasite infected and uninfected ewes were compared. Significant decreases were observed in PCV (P < 0.05), Hb (P < 0.05), RBC (P < 0.05), total protein (P < 0.05), albumin (P < 0.05), globulin (P < 0.05), and MCHC (P < 0.01), and a significant increase was seen in the WBC value (P < 0.05) in the parasite infected group. Furthermore, the parasite infected group had lower serum Fe (P < 0.001), TS % (P < 0.001), and serum Cu (P < 0.01) levels, and had higher UIBC values (P < 0.05) compared to the values obtain from the uninfected group. Therefore, in addition to antiparasite drug treatment in parasite infected pregnant ewes, iron preparations should also be administered in order to treat iron deficiency.

In this work, 9 species of pelagic gastropods were studied during bottom trawling and net sampling for zooplankton of Akkuyu in Erdemli and in İskenderun Bay (the northeastern Mediterranean). Among those, Pterotrachea hippocampus Phlippi, 1836, Cavolinia tridentate (Forsskal, 1775), Limacina (Munthea) trochiformis (D'Orbigny, 1836), and Corolla spectabilis (Dall, 1871) were first records for Turkish mollusk fauna, and the remaining, Atlanta peronii Lesuer, 1817, Firoloida desmarestia Lesuer, 1817, Clio pyramidata Linné, 1767, Creseis acicula Rang, 1828, and Creseis virgula Rang, 1828 were first records for the Mediterranean coast of Turkey.

Myostatin, along with its binding protein follistatin, have been demonstrated to inhibit skeletal muscle development during embryonic and postnatal development, whereas IGF-1 has been reported to stimulate skeletal muscle development and overall growth. The objectives of the current study were to determine the expression profiles of myostatin and follistatin genes, and to evaluate the impact of in ovo administration of recombinant human insulin-like growth factor-1 (rhIGF-1) on these gene expression patterns during quail embryogenesis, with an emphasis on skeletal muscle development.
