Modification Of Low Density Lipoprotein And The Effects Of Modified Low Density Lipoproteins On The Endocytic And Secretory Repertoire Of The Macrophage, Ruth Rebecca Montgomery

Student Theses and Dissertations

This study examines two aspects of the complex interaction between modified low density lipoprotein (LDL) and macrophages in the initiation and development of the atherosclerotic lesion. The first of these concerns the observed biological modification of LDL that leads to its subsequent enhanced uptake by macrophages, and the role of oxidation in that process. The second aspect of this thesis studies the effects of modified LDL on the functions of macrophages. Studies on the oxidation of LDL showed that LDL isolated from human plasma anticoagulated with EDTA (EDTA-LDL) was 4-fold more resistant to oxidation by reagent H2O2 …

Host-Parasite Interrelations: Bacterial Adherence To And Invasion Of Epithelial Cells, Debra Bessen Jan 1987

Host-Parasite Interrelations: Bacterial Adherence To And Invasion Of Epithelial Cells, Debra Bessen

Student Theses and Dissertations

Enteroinvasive Escherichia coli (EIEC) preferentially invaded multinucleated ReLa cells which arose naturally in monolayer cultures at a low frequency. Data suggests that enhancement of the penetration step accounts partly for increased invasion of multinucleated cells. Treatment of ReLa cell monolayers with polyethylene glycol (PEG) led to cell fusion, and invasion of PEG-treated monolayers by EIEC was increased by an average of 7-fold compared to untreated ReLa cells. Treatment of ReLa cells with PEG had no significant effect on the low level of cell-association displayed by noninvasive organisms and thus, PEG-treated ReLa cells appeared to retain their selectivity for EIEC. The …
