Insulin Dose Response Curves And Factors Affecting Insulin Sensitivity In Horses, Jeanne D. Lestelle Jan 2012

Insulin Dose Response Curves And Factors Affecting Insulin Sensitivity In Horses, Jeanne D. Lestelle

LSU Master's Theses

Three experiments were conducted to further study the use of intravenous insulin injection to measure insulin sensitivity in horses. In the first experiment, glucose responses to multiple doses of recombinant human insulin were compared in insulin sensitive and insensitive mares. Regression lines describing the responses in insensitive mares had less (P = 0.003) steep slopes and greater (P = 0.006) effective doses at 50% response (ED50) compared to sensitive mares. Curvilinear regression models provided a good fit (R2 = 0.95) for the prediction of ED50 from the individual responses to 50 mU/kg BW insulin. The second experiment estimated the repeatability …

The Economic Feasibility Of Utilizing Energy Cane In The Cellulosic Production Of Ethanol, Kayla Lynn Brown Jan 2012

The Economic Feasibility Of Utilizing Energy Cane In The Cellulosic Production Of Ethanol, Kayla Lynn Brown

LSU Master's Theses

With an overall lack of economic information available on energy cane production, the aim of this research has been to provide some insight on the economic feasibility of producing energy cane in Louisiana as a feedstock for cellulosic ethanol production. When dealing with a non-traditional crop such as energy cane, increased uncertainty surrounding potential costs and returns can make the crop seem much less appealing to potential producers. As a high-fiber hybrid of traditionally produced sugarcane, energy cane production costs have been estimated using a standard enterprise budgeting approach developed for sugarcane, along with actual yield and fiber data from …

Consumer And Processor Methods To Control Salmonella And Listeria In Shrimp, Genevieve Anne Edwards Jan 2012

Consumer And Processor Methods To Control Salmonella And Listeria In Shrimp, Genevieve Anne Edwards

LSU Master's Theses

A common method used by consumers to determine if shrimp are thoroughly cooked when boiling, is to wait until the shrimp float to the top of the water and are pink in color. The purpose of this study was to determine whether the current floating and color cooking method is adequate to ensure the elimination of Listeria and Salmonella species. Furthermore, to determine if processing and storage methods reduce the effectiveness of this method. Shrimp samples were submerged into bacterial suspensions for 30 min then allowed to air dry for 1 hr and color parameters were measured using a colorimeter. …

Comparative Genomics, Transcriptome Analysis And Characterization Of Selected Regulatory Genes Of Burkholderia Glumae, Felix Francis

LSU Master's Theses

Burkholderia glumae is the primary causal agent of bacterial panicle blight of rice, which is becoming a major threat to global rice production. The genome of a highly virulent B. glumae strain, 336gr-1 that was isolated from rice in Louisiana, was sequenced to better understand the genome-scale characteristics, particularly that of its pathogenicity. Comparative genomic analyses with another strain, BGR1 that was isolated from Korea, revealed several unique regions present in the genomes of these two geographically separated phytopathogenic bacteria. Genome plasticity, primarily caused by a horizontal gene transfer, was observed in these closely related strains of Burkholderia that are …

Oil-Mediated Mortality And Induced Behavioral Modifications Of Coastal Insects, Benjamin Jacob Adams Jan 2012

Oil-Mediated Mortality And Induced Behavioral Modifications Of Coastal Insects, Benjamin Jacob Adams

LSU Master's Theses

The Deepwater Horizon oil spill affected over one thousand kilometers of the southeastern United States’ coast in the Gulf of Mexico especially Louisiana’s salt marshes. These marshes are a vital part of the state’s economy and coastal ecology; however, the insects residing in this area remain largely unstudied. The goal of my project was to answer specific questions arising from two ongoing investigations of the insects in the oiled marshes. I sampled insects using sweep nets and insect vacuums to determine the most efficient technique to use in the marsh, compared insects collected in oiled and non-oiled marshes, and completed …

The Effects Of Spinosad On Culex Quinquefasciatus (Diptera: Culicidae) And Non-Target Insect Species, Owen Mcbride Jones Jan 2012

The Effects Of Spinosad On Culex Quinquefasciatus (Diptera: Culicidae) And Non-Target Insect Species, Owen Mcbride Jones

LSU Master's Theses

Spinosad is a relatively new insecticide with a unique mode of action that is being evaluated for control of larval mosquitoes. Whereas a number of toxicological studies have measured effects of spinosad on various mammals, fish, birds, and terrestrial arthropods, fewer studies have been conducted on the effects of spinosad on non-target aquatic insect species. Such studies are important as these species might be found in the same environments as mosquito larvae targeted for control. A neighborhood pond was surveyed to find a representative species of mosquito as well as other common aquatic insects with which to examine susceptibility to …

The Use Of Ionic Liquid For The Pretreatment Of Energy Cane Bagasse, Zenghui Qiu Jan 2012

The Use Of Ionic Liquid For The Pretreatment Of Energy Cane Bagasse, Zenghui Qiu

LSU Master's Theses

Lignocellulosic biomass appears to be a prospective renewable resource that can be used for the generation of biofuels and bioproducts. The major concern in lignocellulose conversion is overcoming biomass recalcitrance through pretreatment while still maintaining a green, energy efficient and cost-effective process. Energy cane is a promising energy crop with high fiber content, cold tolerance, and less fertilizer and water input requirements as compared to conventional sugarcane. Ionic liquids (ILs) are promising solvents for the pretreatment of lignocellulose as they are thermally stable, environmentally friendly, recyclable, and have low volatility. This study assessed the use of ionic liquid 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium acetate …

Lentiviral Transduction Of Epigenetically Modified Bovine Adult Stem Cells, Meredith Kathleen Addison Jan 2012

Lentiviral Transduction Of Epigenetically Modified Bovine Adult Stem Cells, Meredith Kathleen Addison

LSU Master's Theses

Bovine adipose-derived stem cells (ADS), a form of adult stem cells, are somatic cells that have similar characteristics of embryonic stem (ES) cells. Bovine ADS cells possess multipotent capabilities and have been found to express pluripotency genes associated with ES cells. The unique properties of ADS cells make them a desirable source for reprogramming experiments. The goal of reprogramming experiments is to transform somatic cells from a differentiated state to a pluripotent state. When somatic cells reprogram, there are certain epigenetic changes or modifications that must occur in order to successfully reprogram the nucleus. Epigenetic modifications will change the chromatin …

Commuting Patterns And Labor Markets: A New Regional Classification For Louisiana, Deepa Acharya Jan 2012

Commuting Patterns And Labor Markets: A New Regional Classification For Louisiana, Deepa Acharya

LSU Master's Theses

Regional classification and labor market study form an important part of any regional development efforts. Successful formation and implementation of developmental policies for a region requires a sound knowledge of the labor market situation and socioeconomic background of the region, which in turn leads ultimately to regional welfare. We find literature in the area of regional classification to be very inadequate. This study classifies Louisiana using a clustering approach in two different ways. First of all, Ward’s method has been used to classify Louisiana into labor markets based on two-way commuting flow between the parishes. Eight geographical clusters are formed …

The Effect Of Frozen Storage On The Survival Of Probiotic Microorganisms Found In Traditional And Commercial Kefir, Keely Virginia O'Brien

LSU Master's Theses

Kefir is a fermented milk traditionally made from a unique starter culture, which consists of numerous bacteria and yeast species bound together in an exopolysaccharide matrix produced by certain lactic acid bacteria. Many health benefits are associated with traditionally produced kefir; however, bulging and leaking packaging, caused by secondary yeast fermentation during storage, has limited large scale manufacture traditionally produced kefir. Commercial kefir products have been designed to reduce these effects by using a pure starter culture consisting of a mixture of bacteria and yeast species that give a flavor similar to traditional kefir, but some health benefits may be …

The objectives of this study were: 1. to elucidate the influence of PM and PN at various concentrations, on the growth …

Factors Influencing Price Volatility On Soybeans Futures Prices, Diego J. Gavilanez Hernandez Jan 2012

Factors Influencing Price Volatility On Soybeans Futures Prices, Diego J. Gavilanez Hernandez

LSU Master's Theses

Recent unexpected changes (mid-2007- Aug 2011) in agricultural commodity markets have led stakeholders to ask if the volatility of futures prices currently observed are still the result of traditional fundamentals. Consequently, the purpose of this research was to identify those factors that affect monthly soybeans futures price volatility. To accomplish this study, four relevant factors are explored. First, the integration between energy and agricultural markets is accounted for via oil spot prices, as well as a dummy variable to account for the shift in the U.S renewable fuel policy since 2007. Second, the increasing consumption of commodities from China is …

Assessment Of Stink Bug Feeding Damage In Louisiana Soybean: Use Of A No-Choice Feeding Field Protocol, Jessica Leigh Parker

LSU Master's Theses

Numerous arthropods are pests of soybean in the subtropical environment of Louisiana. The most important pod-feeding guild includes a complex of stink bugs (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae). One of these species, redbanded stink bug (Piezodorus guildinii [Westwood]), has emerged as a significant pest in Louisiana soybean. Currently, limited information is available describing soybean plant injury from this pest in the United States or compares injury relative to native stink bugs. Therefore, a field protocol was modified to assess injury to soybean seeds. Studies conducted in Louisiana during 2009-2011 used procedures to isolate the effects of infestation duration (24-96 h after infestation [HAI]) …

Evaluation Of Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms Associated With Fertility And Production Traits In Holstein And Multi-Generational Angus Females, Rebecca Ann Hill Jan 2012

Evaluation Of Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms Associated With Fertility And Production Traits In Holstein And Multi-Generational Angus Females, Rebecca Ann Hill

LSU Master's Theses

The objective of this study was to test the association of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) with fertility in two populations consisting of Holstein cows and multi-generational Angus cows. The candidate gene approach was utilized and previously described SNPs were tested for possible associations with fertility. Single nucleotide polymorphisms on three genes were evaluated including leptin receptor LEPR, calpastatin CAST, and DGAT1. Fertility traits were evaluated in conjunction with production traits for Holstein females and growth traits for Angus females. One SNP was significantly associated with birth weight (P < 0.05) in Angus females while a trend (P < 0.10) was observed for two markers influencing birth weight performance and three markers influencing weaning weight performance. An association of two SNP for birth weight and back fat thickness in Angus females was identified.!A trend (P < 0.10) was observed for one marker within LEPR influencing average services to conception, two markers within CAST influencing average days open, two markers within CAST and one marker within DGAT1 influencing average protein production, and one marker within CAST and one marker within DGAT1 influencing average milk production. One SNP within LEPR was significantly associated with average milk production (P < 0.05) in Holstein females. An association of one SNP within CAST and one SNP within DGAT1 for average protein production and average milk production in Holstein females was identified. An association of one SNP within CAST for average days open and average protein production in Holstein females was also identified. The association of these markers indicates that the evaluated quantitative trait loci (QTL) region may harbor causative mutations responsible for the variation observed in fertility and production traits. Further evaluation of SNP in these regions is necessary in order to identify mutations accounting for the largest degree of variation for fertility and production traits.

Effect Of Surfactants On The Pretreatment Of Sugarcane Bagasse With Dilute Ammonia, Shuo Cao Jan 2012

Effect Of Surfactants On The Pretreatment Of Sugarcane Bagasse With Dilute Ammonia, Shuo Cao

LSU Master's Theses

Lignocellulosic biomass is composed of cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin which are not readily available for conversion in their native form. It is widely accepted that lignin acts as the “glue” that binds cellulose and hemicellulose, giving rigidity and resistance to lignocellulose. The use of non-ionic surfactants during pretreatment can help alter the structure of lignocellulosic biomass to improve cellulose digestibility and ethanol yields. Tween 80, Tween 20, PEG 4000, or PEG 6000 was used with ammonium hydroxide for the pretreatment of sugarcane bagasse. The pretreatment was carried out by mixing sugarcane bagasse, ammonium hydroxide (28% v/v) and water at a …

Research has found conflicting results on animal performance and carcass traits associated with the use of forage as the primary feed source for finishing cattle. Consumer interest in forage-fed products has grown and little research has been done comparing performance of forage-fed animals and beef finished on different forages. Spring weaned calves (n=54; 257 ± 2.5 kg; 3/8 Gelbvieh, 3/8 Red Angus, and 1/4 Brahman) were used in the evaluation of three forage systems (S1, S2, and S3) on a 100% forage diet in two consecutive years (June 2009 and 2010). Steers were divided into 9 groups based on initial …

Economic Assessment Of Rapid Land-Building Technologies For Coastal Restoration, Hua Wang Jan 2012

Economic Assessment Of Rapid Land-Building Technologies For Coastal Restoration, Hua Wang

LSU Master's Theses

In the wake of recent hurricanes, coastal managers in Louisiana have begun integrating infrastructure protection and habitat restoration. Concurrent with this change, emphasis has been placed on marsh creation (MC) techniques that rely on mechanical dredges and sediment conveyance pipelines to rapidly build new land. The costs and benefits of this approach are increasingly compared to more natural and slower methods using fresh water diversions (FWD), yet such comparisons are not typically inclusive of time and risk considerations. Data for more than 300 coastal wetland restoration projects were evaluated for the statistical development of generic acreage trajectories and restoration cost …
