Dynamic Changes In Phytoplankton Community Structure After Thermal Shock And Chlorination In A Subtropical Bay: An Experimental Study, Zhi-Bing Jiang, Yi-Bo Liao, Jing-Jing Liu, Quan-Zhen Chen, Jiang-Ning Zeng, Gen-Hai Zhu
Journal of Marine Science and Technology
Natural phytoplankton collected from the Yueqing Bay was exposed to a series of heat shock temperatures and chlorine dosages in a laboratory for simulating its passage through coastal power plant cooling systems. A short-term thermal shock (30 min) had no appreciable effect on the microalgae community for temperature elevation of 4-12°C in all seasons. However, the adverse effects of chlorination on the microalgae were considerably more severe than those of a thermal shock in terms of dominant succession, species richness, diversity, evenness, and community composition. Moreover, chlorination strongly influenced the diversity indices throughout a 15-d culture period, indicating an evident …

Sequence Diversity Of Ammonium Transporter Genes In Cultured And Natural Species Of Marine Phytoplankton, Lee-Kuo Kang, Jeng Chang
Journal of Marine Science and Technology
The sequence database of ammonium transporter (Amt1) genes in eukaryotic phytoplankton was expanded by obtaining new sequences from cultured strains and natural populations collected in the East China Sea (ECS). From unialgal cultures, 6 new Amt1 sequences belonging to the Bacillariophyceae, Dinophyceae, and Prasinophyceae were obtained. A phylogenetic analysis revealed that AMT1s of higher plants were most closely related to those in green algae. In addition, haptophyte and diatom AMT1s formed distinct monophyletic clades. Diatom AMT1s were further divided into 3 orthologous subclasses, and active gene duplications were observed in subclass III. As for mixed-species sequencing using ECS samples, 78 …

Journal of Marine Science and Technology
Species composition of phytoplankton was monitored seasonally in the waters off the First and Second Nuclear Power plants (NPP1 and NPP2), north of Taiwan during 2001-2002. In total, 290 phytoplankton samples were collected and 265 taxa of phytoplankton were recorded. Chaetoceros compressus, Pseudo-nitzschia delicatissima, Skeletonema costatum, Thalassionema nitzschioides, and Lauderia annulata were the top five dominant species. Together they comprised 75% of the total phytoplankton cells. The species number and abundance of phytoplankton showed distinct seasonal, annual, and spatial changes, higher abundance in 2002 than 2001 and highest in August in both years and lowest in March in 2001 and …
