Aspen (Populus tremuloides Michx.) stands are in decline throughout the Interior Western United States because of fire suppression, overbrowsing by domestic livestock and native ungulates, and forest succession. We measured summertime soil temperatures in stable aspen, decadent aspen, and mixed aspen/conifer stands; a mixed aspen/conifer clearcut; as mixed aspen/conifer forest that was burned in a lightning-caused fire; and a decadent aspen stand and mixed aspen/conifer stand that received prescribed burns. Soil temperature fluctuations and mean soil temperatures were greater in cut and burned areas than in untreated stands. In untreated stands, mean soil temperature increased in the order: mixed …

Annual early spring burning has markedly altered the physiognomy and species composition of aspen parkland vegetation of east-central Alberta. Burning was conducted in April for at least 24 years when soil moisture was normally high. The number of herbaceous species per quadrat doubled while a number of woody species declined slightly.

Aspen parkland range in central Alberta that had been treated with a herbicide two years prior to the study had greater grazing use of the sprayed forest vegetation than did the untreated forest.

Aspen groves within mixed conifer forests produce more herbaceous understory than adjacent forest. Thinning aspen groves improves herbaceous understory and aspen regeneration. Higher deer and cattle use of aspen groves is associated with the greater abundance of understory vegetation.
