Genetic variations in the large-conductance, voltage- and calcium activated potassium channels (BK channels) have been recently implicated in mental retardation, autism and schizophrenia which all come along with severe cognitive impairments. In the present study we investigate the effects of functional BK channel deletion on cognition using a genetic mouse model with a knock-out of the gene for the pore forming α-subunit of the channel. We tested the F1 generation of a hybrid SV129/C57BL6 mouse line in which the slo1 gene was deleted in both parent strains.
We first evaluated hearing and motor function to establish the suitability of this …
An Autoethnographical Tapestry Of Feminist Reflection On My Journey Of A Fitness Model Physique, Stephanie A. Paplinskie
An Autoethnographical Tapestry Of Feminist Reflection On My Journey Of A Fitness Model Physique, Stephanie A. Paplinskie
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
Weight training and fitness competitions are increasingly popular activities for many women seeking an aesthetically fit body. This thesis entails a critical reflection of the various factors surrounding my personal decision to partake in body sculpting, examining how these factors parallel the experience of other women in the fitness industry. Using a feminist theoretical framework and autoethnography, a history of feminist theory is incorporated to demonstrate some of the various perspectives surrounding women bodies. Two challenges for women are discussed in this paper: i) the fear of fat, and how it is connected to a woman’s initial decision to attend …
The Effect Of Exercise On Cravings And Ad Libitum Smoking Following Concurrent Stressors, Angela J. Fong
The Effect Of Exercise On Cravings And Ad Libitum Smoking Following Concurrent Stressors, Angela J. Fong
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
Quitting smoking itself is a stressor; it is likely that other stressors occur concurrently and deplete self-regulatory resources. Failure to cope leads to smoking relapse. Exercise has been shown to attenuate cravings and withdrawal symptoms in previous research and has yet to be examined following concurrent stressors. This study examined the effect of an acute bout of moderate intensity exercise on psychological withdrawal symptoms (PWS), cravings and ad lib smoking after concurrent stressors (i.e., temporary abstinence and depletion). Twenty-five smokers were randomized into exercise or passive conditions. Results showed PWS were significantly exacerbated after temporary abstinence and again after depletion …
Understanding The Volunteer Youth Coaching Environment: A Psychological Contract Perspective, Alanna Harman
Understanding The Volunteer Youth Coaching Environment: A Psychological Contract Perspective, Alanna Harman
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
The purpose of this dissertation was to explore the volunteer coaching environment using psychological contract theory. Psychological contract posits that volunteers and their organization have implicit and explicit expectations of each other, and the breach and fulfillment of these expectations impact volunteers’ attitude and intended behaviour.
Study 1 explored the content of volunteer coaches’ psychological contract, and influences to the development of it. Interviews with 22 coaches of team sports, representing different demographic factors were included. The results revealed that volunteer coaches possess both transactional and relational expectations. Variation was found by coaching tenure and level of play. Sources external …
Aging And Obesity Models In Osteoarthritis, Sara Ohora
Aging And Obesity Models In Osteoarthritis, Sara Ohora
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
Osteoarthritis (OA) is a degenerative joint disease whose exact mechanisms are not well understood, but aging and obesity are common risk factors. To determine the role of transforming growth factor-alpha (TGFα) in obesity-associated OA, Tgfa null and control mice on control and high fat diets were compared. In addition, spontaneous OA was investigated in aging C57BL/6J mice. Quantitative magnetic resonance was used to assess body composition in the obesity model, while gait analysis, histological staining and OARSI scoring were used to determine OA in both models. Mice on high fat diet developed no OA, but Tgfa null mice weighed significantly …
Molecular Mechanisms Underlying The Early Life Programming Of The Liver, Gurjeev Sohi
Molecular Mechanisms Underlying The Early Life Programming Of The Liver, Gurjeev Sohi
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
Clinical studies have demonstrated that intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) offspring, faced with a nutritional mismatch postpartum, have an increased risk of developing the metabolic syndrome. The maternal protein restriction (MPR) rat model has been extensively studied to investigate the adverse effects of a nutritional mismatch in postnatal life of IUGR offspring. Previous studies have demonstrated that MPR leads to impaired function of the liver, an important metabolic organ. However the underlying mechanisms which predispose these offspring to the metabolic syndrome remain elusive. In the following studies, low protein diet during pregnancy and lactation led to IUGR offspring with decreased liver …
Assessing Multi-Unit Muscle Sympathetic Nerve Activity Across Groups: A Multivariate Approach To A Multivariate Concept, Danielle N. Brewer
Assessing Multi-Unit Muscle Sympathetic Nerve Activity Across Groups: A Multivariate Approach To A Multivariate Concept, Danielle N. Brewer
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
Baseline muscle sympathetic nerve activity (MSNA) comparisons of age (young & old, n=40) and cardiovascular disease (CVD) state (young: Y, old: O, metabolic syndrome: MET, coronary artery disease: CAD, chronic heart failure: CHF, n= 36) groups were made to assess which MSNA variable(s) best describe group differences using a MANOVA-based approach across 10 variables. The hypothesis that action potential (AP) variables would better discriminate between groups than integrated variables was not supported. Burst frequency and incidence together significantly differentiated between groups with variability attributed to spikes/min and spikes/100hb removed. Significant group differences were noted for these variables such that Y
Cognitive Function In Bk Channel Knock-Out Mice, Magdalena N. Mirkowski
Cognitive Function In Bk Channel Knock-Out Mice, Magdalena N. Mirkowski
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
BK channels are large conductance potassium channels activated by both Ca2+ concentration and membrane depolarization. They recently have been implicated to be involved in sensorimotor gating and higher cognitive function. However, it is not yet clear to what extent these channels affect these functions. The purpose of this study is to assess the role of BK channels in sensorimotor gating and cognitive function. We used a C57BL6 and SV129 hybrid mouse model in which the pore forming alpha subunit was genetically deleted. We employed the acoustic startle response to assess mechanisms of sensory gating (habituation and PPI), and the …

Governing Occupation Through Constructions Of Risk: The Case Of The Aging Driver, Silke Dennhardt
Governing Occupation Through Constructions Of Risk: The Case Of The Aging Driver, Silke Dennhardt
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
Risk and risk-management have become increasingly pervasive features of modern society and governmentality scholars have highlighted various ways risk discourses are taken up to govern citizens and their everyday conduct. Thus, attending to risk is imperative to advance an understanding of how everyday occupation is shaped and governed within contemporary society. Within this study, the example of driving in later life is drawn upon to address two objectives: 1. to advance the understanding of how risk is taken up to govern everyday occupation, and 2. to explicate how risk is taken up in discourses to constitute particular subjectivities and their …

Awareness Of Physical Activity Levels And Sedentary Behaviour: An Assessment Of Awareness Of Physical Activity Levels And Sedentary Behaviour Among Parents And Children, Tripat Simran Kaur Grewal
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
The purpose of this study was to assess awareness of physical activity and sedentary behaviour among parents and children aged 10-13 years. Associations between awareness and factors including age, BMI, gender, and obesity status were also examined. A total of 53 parent-child dyads participated in the study. Agreement between parent and child subjective measures (self-report) and objectively measured physical activity was examined to determine awareness. Most parents (87%) and children (83%) overestimated child moderate-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) beyond 30 minutes/day. The majority of parents (87%) and children (85%) also underestimated child sedentary behaviour by at least 3 hours/day. Older children …
