Dahlia Cut Flower Production In Utah, Melanie Stock, Amanda Pratt, Claudia Nischwitz, Eli Oliver, Katie Wagner, Nick Volesky

Dahlias are tuberous, herbaceous plants that are frost sensitive and therefore grown as a warm-season annual for cut flower production in Utah. Dahlias bloom in summer to fall, with peak production in late summer to early fall, and the season ending with first frost. Plants benefit from pinching to encourage branching and horizontal trellising or staking to promote straight stems and avoid toppling. High tunnels or extended low tunnels with shade, as well as optimum nitrogen and irrigation rates, improve production. As showstoppers in arrangements, dahlia cut flowers are highly desired on local markets and profitable to produce, particularly those …

Evaluating Anemone And Ranunculus Production Strategies In Utah, Shannon Rauter Apr 2021

Evaluating Anemone And Ranunculus Production Strategies In Utah, Shannon Rauter

Student Research Symposium

As the number of cut flower growers in the Intermountain West increases, there is a demand for regional information about optimal planting dates, season extension, and locally adapted cultivars to improve yield and harvest timing for anemone (Anemone coronaria) and ranunculus (Ranunculus asiaticus) cut flowers. Existing grower recommendations can be problematic because the combination of late spring freezes and hot, bright summer days can delay harvests and lower flower quality. Therefore, the objectives of this research are to evaluate 1) fall and spring planting dates, 2) the use of high tunnels and insulated field production systems, 3) tuber preparation methods, …

Sweet Pea Cut Flower Production In Utah, Maegen Lewis, Melanie Stock, Tiffany Maughan, Dan Drost, Brent Black Oct 2019

Sweet Pea Cut Flower Production In Utah, Maegen Lewis, Melanie Stock, Tiffany Maughan, Dan Drost, Brent Black

All Current Publications

This fact sheet describes sweet pea cut flower production in Utah, Planting sweet peas early in the year provides extended, cool-season conditions that are critical for producing a high quality crop and maximizing yield in Utah. High tunnels allow for earlier planting than in the field and therefore, a longer growing period under cool temperatures. In our conditions, Elegance and Mammoth series had the greatest number of marketable stems and are recommended for Utah sweet pea production. Color trends and market demands should also factor into cultivar selection if growing for the cut flower industry.
