Network representation provides a natural framework for the study of real world complex systems. From social networks and animal groups to interneuronal communications and power grid systems, complex patterns of interaction can be captured and modeled using networks in a simple mathematical form. In many cases, however, a faithful network representation of the system is not readily available. For this reason, network reconstruction has become a growing topic of interest in recent years, the goal of which is to discover the hidden interaction patterns among individuals by fitting input-output data from multiple experiments to candidate network topologies.

INTRODUCTION: Expert recommendations instruct mothers to exclusively breastfeed for infant’s first 6 months of life. While many mothers intend to breastfeed, mothers frequently cite early breastfeeding difficulties as a leading cause of breastfeeding cessation. The large discrepancy between a mother’s intentions for exclusive breastfeeding and the actual rates warrants further investigation. Adverse eating attitudes and eating behaviors describe thoughts and actions related to food and body image that increase risk for development for an eating disorder. The term, “fat talk” was defined as, “cultural meanings of talk about weight” and has been used to assess preoccupation with the cultural stigma of weight. Understanding risk factors for the development of adverse thoughts and actions in adolescence is especially important, as disordered cognitions and behaviors often appear in early adolescence. This thesis focuses on understanding what impact the barrier of food security has on the fruit and vegetable intake of older adults. Food insecurity - lacking consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy lifestyle - is an issue that affects 1 in 9 Americans, and can have an impact on one’s diet and potentially overall health. Background: Individuals of low socioeconomic status (SES) are disproportionately at risk for developing type 2 diabetes (T2DM) compared to their higher SES counterparts. Smartphone apps are increasingly used as a tool to compliment current diabetes education and have the ability to increase prevention and diabetes education in health disparate communities. The objective of this study was to identify the quality of nutrition and health related apps frequently recommended by diabetes educators to compliment current T2DM education programs for patient of low SES.

VHH domains are the antigen-binding units found in heavy-chain-only antibodies from the Camelidae family (e.g., camels and llamas). They are considered a unique minimalist antibody scaffold due to the lack of a variable light chain domain. Despite having half the antigen-binding interface of conventional antibodies, these VHH antibodies bind their target antigens with affinities comparable to conventional antibodies. This project explored how flexible linkers connecting an anti-GFP VHH (αGFP VHH) domain to its antigen (EGFP) enhanced antigen stability and influenced oligomeric assembly. Climate change has been considered a key driver for adaptations in water usage efficiency (WUE) in plants. Perceptions persist that C4 photosynthesis is indicative of some level of WUE. Here, we examined the interaction and evolution of WUE within the grass family, Poaceae, as it pertains to photosynthetic pathway. Unique to this study is the magnitude of taxa sampled, presence of intrageneric sampling, and use of complete plastid genomes (plastomes) for phylogenomic analyses.

This project characterizes two independent, previously undescribed microbial dark matter organisms from the candidate phyla JL-ETNP-Z39 and NBK19. These characterizations are based on seven single amplified genomes (SAGs) for JL-ETNP-Z39 and six SAGs for NBK19. All SAGs used were provided by the Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean Sciences Single-Cell Genomics Center (scgc.bigelow.org). Bioinformatic analyses using a combination of publicly available software and custom scripting written in the computer programming languages Python and R were carried out to determine the basic genomic properties, evolutionary relatedness, representative environmental pangenomes, and metabolic properties of these organisms. In this thesis I provide an analysis of punitive perceptions of animal crimes and argue that the lack of value seen in animal’s lives affects perceptions of punishment for animal crimes. Specifically, I examine the role of animal attitudes and race on perceptions of crimes against dogs and will address the following question with a vignette survey design: How do racial stereotypes interact with dog breed stereotypes when considering punishment for animal crime? Parasitoid wasps are often part of the rich invertebrate communities in decaying organic matter where their hosts are found. However, little is known about what adults of these parasitoids eat. Most parasitoid wasps parasitize herbaceous insects, so nectar from flowers often is readily available. The present study examined feeding by adult Spalangia cameroni Perkins (Hymenoptera: Pteromalidae), a species that burrows through manure, where it finds and parasitizes pupae of filth flies. Body mass index (BMI) is a widely used approach to quantify body fat in large group settings; however, this method has significant shortcomings with accuracy and estimation. The fungus Aspergillus fumigatus is a ubiquitous opportunistic human pathogen capable of causing a life-threatening disease called invasive aspergillosis, or IA, with an associated 40–90% mortality rate in immunocompromised patients. Of the approximately 250 species known in the genus Aspergillus, A. fumigatus is responsible for up to 90% of IA infections. This study focuses on examining the role of the putative polysaccharide synthase cpsA gene in A. fumigatus virulence. Less work has investigated how support received from various sources cumulatively is associated with internalizing symptoms. Research suggests that above other sources, parents and peers are the most strongly associated with internalizing outcomes. Carbohydrates are immensely important biomolecule found in all organisms on earth, serving roles in structure, energy storage, protection and/or cell signaling. Carbohydrates are composed of an immense diversity of linkages, monosaccharide moieties and substitutions making them likely the most diverse biomolecule on earth, as well as the most abundant, being synthesized by plants and algae. Carbohydrates are synthesized and degraded by all organisms on earth through the expression of carbohydrate active enzymes, or ‘CAZymes’.
