Semichemical pulping involves both mechanical and chemical pulping techniques. In semichemical pulping the liquor is in contact with the chips for a relatively short period of time. The faster with liquor can penetrate the chips before they see mechanical action, the better the pulp properties. The effects of adding a surfactant to the liquor was studied. It was found that the anionic ethoxylated surfactant which was added at the addition rate of 5#/ton to non-sulfur semi-chemical pulping liquor increased the lignin content of the resulting pulp and lowered the tensile strength.

Recycling is an area of interest for much of the industry because of all the environmental concerns with the cutting down of trees, and the pulping operations to make paper. However, virgin fibers are still desired because they make stronger paper. Virgin fibers have a higher swelling capability than recycled fibers, that accounts for better bonding. Paper's physical properties also decrease rapidly as filler is substituted for fiber. Filler impairs interfiber bonding by preventing close contact with fibers. Fluorescent Whitening Agents (FWAs) are commonly used in many areas of the pulp and paper industry. FWAs are also known as Optical Brightening Agents (OBAs) and generically as fluorescent dyes. Nearly one-third of all FWAs manufactured are used in the pulp and paper industry. FWAs work by converting ultraviolet light into blue-white light in the visible region. When FWAs are used in coatings with latex binders, the fluorescent dyes have a tendency to migrate toward the basesheet during drying. Pulp bleaching is a multi-staged process which uses different chemicals and conditions in each stage, with washing performed between these stages. With chlorine compounds being the most widely used bleaching agents, the water from bleaching and washing stages subsequently contains a high chloride content as well as chloro-organic compounds which makes them incompatible with pulping chemical recovery processes. Leukotriene (LT) C4 is a potent myotropic product of arachidonic acid 5-lipoxygenation that is thought to play a role in the pathophysiology of immediate hypersensitivity reactions and inflammation. We designed the present study to evaluate the capacity of August (AUG) rat mixed peritoneal leukocytes to generate LTC4 when challenged with different concentrations of the Ca2+ ionophore A23187 and to test the hypothesis that LTC4 biosynthesis is regulated via a protein kinase C (PKC)-dependent mechanism. The tilapia fish Sarotherodon mossambicus (Teleostei, Cichlidae) is an important protein source for Indonesians, is a strong competitor with some endemic species and .readily hybridizes with other tilapias. A base line assessment of the present genetic diversity of these populations in Indonesia was conducted to facilitate the management of this species. This study compared the effectiveness of the 3 techniques (morphometric, isozyme and RAPD) in revealing differences within and among 9 Javanese populations. The data were also used to estimate the rate of divergence among the populations.

American beech, Fagus grandifolia Ehrlich, in eastern North America are currently threatened by the devastating beech bark disease. This disease is caused by the fungal pathogens, Nectria coccinea var. faginata Lohman, Watson and Ayers, and Nectria galligena Bres., which infect trees that are predisposed by infestations of beech scale, Cryptococcus fagisuga Lindinger. In 1993, beech bark disease was discovered in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park (GSMNP).

The expression of several genes has been shown to be either positively or negatively regulated by insulin at the transcriptional level, however no single insulin responsive DNA element has yet been identified. The transcription factors responsible for stimulation or inhibition of gene expression by insulin also remain to be identified. In recent years, expression of the gene for glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PDH) in primary rat hepatocytes has been found to be influenced by hormones such as insulin, dexamethosone, and glucagon. The purpose of this study resulted from a need to gather and analyze data on gait characteristics of normal children using the Peak Performance Technologies, Incorporated system, initiate a data base for the Motion Analysis Center at Old Dominion University and compare a computerized motion analysis system to studies using different methods. Fifteen children, aged four to six, were evaluated during gait using a video-based computerized motion analysis system manufactured by Peak Performance Technologies, Incorporated. Monoclonal antibodies (mAb) to MHC class II molecules (anti-class II mAb) have been well described in their ability to inhibit T cell activation. The most current model is that anti-class II mAb interfere directly with the T cell receptor-major histocompatibility complex crosslinking which is necessary for T cell activation. The anti-CD3 mAb, OKT3, is an MHC class II molecule-independent mitogen which causes T cell activation by direct ligation of the TCR-CD3 complex. Glutathione (GSH) and related enzymes interact as a ubiquitous and efficient detoxification system in biological organisms. Several naturally occurring, as well as synthetic compounds, are known to increase the levels of glutathione/glutathione S-transferases (GST). One of the natural compounds includes myristicin, which is a constituent of parsley leaf oil as well as other natural foods. The extent to which the levels of the GSH/GST system can be induced appears to be dependent on the specific tissue type and the amount of myristicin administered. The foraging and nesting ecology of the Great Kiskadee was studied in the Lower Rio Grande Valley, Texas during 1994 and 1995. Adult kiskadees were found to be omnivorous, feeding mainly on fleshy fruits, fish, and dragonflies, and capturing animal prey mainly by surface gleaning into water or hawking prey out of midair. Nests are constructed mainly during March and April and are built at heights between 6 and 10 meters apparently without preference to tree species. Of 29 nests observed, 66% (19) were active during at least part of the breeding season. Nestlings are fed a diet very similar …

The purpose of this research is to analyze the Air Force's 1994 Toxic Release Inventory data. Statistical tests were used to meet the following research objectives: (1) review the CY 94 data to determine which chemicals were most often reported and which bases and major commands had the most releases in terms of the number of chemicals reported and the amount of chemicals reported and (2) investigate factors which could influence the reporting status of a facility. The predatory stomatopod Hemisquilla ensigera californiensiswas captured at 10-20 m depths off California and transferred to an observation tank with artificial burrows similar to those observed in the field. The animals were maintained under a 1OL:140 light-dark cycle and monitored on a 24-hour basis using a time-lapse video recorder. Infrared lamps were used for observations within the burrow and at night. Metabolic rates, as a function of oxygen tension, were measured in respirometry chambers using polarographic oxygen electrodes.

It is a well-known fact that high frequency, or radio frequency, radiation can be directly harmful to biological tissue. The radiation frequencies to which humans are most exposed, however, are the extremely low frequencies, or ELFs. To date there has been no definitive measure for predicting the ability of low frequency electromagnetic radiation to cause adverse biological effects. Two specific measures, average magnetic field and kinetic index, have been used in studies to determine if they are useful predictors of adverse effects, specifically leukemia. A 40-year-old upland hardwood stand in west Tennessee was selected to test the effectiveness of crop tree management techniques. The stand consisted of 20 acres with each acre having the potential to contain 36 crop trees. Treatments consisted of: 1) a crown release, 2) fertilization (150 lbs. N and 35 lbs. P205 per acre) and 3) a combined release and fertilizer treatment.

Objective Research was conducted to determine the extent to which a sample of licensed child care agencies in Tennessee met 31 nutrition and food service standards as contained in the National Health and Safety Performance Standards: Guidelines for Out-of-Home Child Care Programs and to identify any significant differences by type of agency, USDA Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP) participation, and profit status.

This study develops a method to model forest cover distributions in the Little Tennessee River Watershed in Macon County, North Carolina using a geographic information system (GIS). The model employs common environmental variables, e.g. elevation, aspect, and slope, and a newly developed metric called a topographic index. The topographic index quantifies landscape form to reflect the degree of site convexity or concavity. To generate index values, the GIS sums relative aspect differences between all adjacent cells and the center cell in a neighborhood analysis. The purpose of this research was to determine the threshold dose for ammonium perchlorate (AP) in the Sprague-Dawley rat. No dose response data exist for AP and the EPA has studied literature on the subject of perchlorates to determine a provisional reference dose. The Perchiorate Group, a consortium of DoD and industry representatives, believes this provisional reference dose is too conservative. This research was a general phenomenalistic overview of the effects of metals on the respiration rates of a toluene selected microbe culture. The metals studied were copper, zinc, cobalt, manganese and iron. Relative inhibition, Cu>Fe>Zn=Co>Mn, corresponded to hydrogen phosphate binding strengths. Inhibition was found to be pH dependent; it increased with increasing pH and was shown to correlate to an increased adsorption of metal onto the cell. Zn, Cu, and Co toxicities were shown to decrease with increasing magnesium concentrations. This decrease was linked to increased magnesium adsorption and decreased metal adsorption. This research examined health effects literature concerning several occupational chemicals, to identify significant adverse health trends and assess research quality, completeness, and relevance. After compiling this knowledge base, the research focus was narrowed to Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS), solvents, and pyridostigmine bromide (PB). The human c-myc gene is a cellular proto-oncogene composed of three exons and two introns. Transcription of c-myc is controlled by two promoters, P1 and P2. The activity of these promoters is regulated by many factors, such as cellular transcription factors E2F, YY1, and HSV-1 immediate-early proteins, ICP0, ICP4.

Increasing economic importance of cotton production in Louisiana, awareness of the financial and environmental benefits of crop rotations have stressed the need for evaluating cotton production in different rotational schemes. The objective of this study was to estimate profitability of alternative crop rotational schemes within a whole farm context. Yield data for 11 alternative production systems involving cotton, soybean, corn, wheat were obtained from the ongoing crop rotation research at the Northeast Research Station during the period 1983 -1993. Radiotelemetry was used to study seasonal movement patterns, habitat use, and thermal relations of nine copperhead snakes, Agkistrodon contortrix, in southeastern Virginia from May 1993 to May 1995. Daily movements ranged from 0-450 m, with 0-5 m movements accounting for 65% of the observations. The seasonal movements of males were more extensive than those of females. Differences in seasonal movements between the sexes may be due to reproductive activity of the snakes. Both males and females significantly reduced their movements prior to shedding. More time was spent using upland deciduous forests than lowland river swamps or anthropogenic habitat. Copperheads …

Additionally, the number of deaths attributed to prostate cancer is increasing at a rate of approximately 8% a year.
