Determining Sex Of Plains Pocket Gophers By Incisor Width, Ronald M. Case, Alan B. Sargeant
Determining Sex Of Plains Pocket Gophers By Incisor Width, Ronald M. Case, Alan B. Sargeant
University of Nebraska State Museum: Mammalogy Papers
Biologists studying food habits of predators can often determine the prey species but not the sex of the prey from remains found at dens, in stomachs, scats, or pellets of predators. Knowledge of the sex of prey is useful in evaluating predator food habits as well as indicating sex specific differences in prey behavior.
Plains pocket gophers, Geomys bursarius, can be easily identified by the presence of two prominent grooves on the face of each upper incisor. This makes them ideal specimens for studying prey remains. In this paper, we present data that can be used to identify the …

Effects Of Wastewater Discharges On Periphyton Growth In Lake Mead, Nevada-Arizona, Marsha Korb Morris
Effects Of Wastewater Discharges On Periphyton Growth In Lake Mead, Nevada-Arizona, Marsha Korb Morris
Publications (WR)
A study of the effects of secondary-treated wastewater on periphyton growth in Lake Mead, Nevada-Arizona was conducted from September 1979 to December 1980. Periphyton ash-free dry weight, chlorophyll-a, dominant species composition, and alkaline phosphatase activity were measured on fiberglass substrates. Substrates were incubated for two to four weeks in littoral and limnetic habitats. Physical and chemical variables and phytoplankton chlorophyll-a were measured concurrently.
Transparency increased with increasing distance from the discharge. Secchi depth ranged from 0.75 m at the discharge confluence (station 2) in August, to greater than 20 m at the most distant stations (stations 9 and 10) in …

Louisiana Waterthrush Nesting In Fontenelle Forest, Paul Bedell
Nebraska Bird Review
On 5 June 1982, I located a nest of the Louisiana Waterthrush (Seiurus motacilla) in Fontenelle Forest. The location had been determined on 26 April when I, with three others, Tanya Bray, Babs Padelford and B.J. Rose, saw a Waterthrush carrying nesting material. This site was later reported as abandoned. I had first seen a Waterthrush in this area on 15 April and identified it as a Louisiana by its song. On 21 April I saw two foraging together. On the date of the nest building they were silent and easily overlooked; but I heard occasional singing on …

Minden Notes. On 14 May 1982 I saw six or so White Pelicans over the Platte, south of Kearney, and a Swainson's Hawk, perched on a fence post, near Minden. I saw Lapland Longspurs 25 December, and then not again until 11 February, when they were present in large numbers. I usually saw Marsh Hawks when I got out this winter, and Rough-legged, and Red-tailed Hawks, and a few Kestrels. Prairie Falcons were not much seen, however. I flushed a Sprague's Pipit, northwest of minden, plus a few Savannah Sparrows. Red Crossbills were common feeders in town, earlier in the …

Aquatic Feeding By Moose: Seasonal Variation In Relation To Plant Chemical Composition And Use Of Mineral Licks, D. Fraser, B. K. Thompson, D. Arthur
Feeding Behavior Collection
Activity of moose (Alces alces) was studied at aquatic feeding areas and at natural, sodium-rich licks during four periods covering late May to early September. Aquatic feeding increased from period 1 (late May and early June) to period 2 (late June and early July) and had declined by late July. Major activity at mineral licks occurred earlier in the season than aquatic feeding, especially for males. Chemical composition of aquatic plants showed no seasonal changes corresponding to the peak of aquatic feeding in period 2, although the sodium content of some species declined in period 3. We suggest that moose …
1982 Fall Field Day
Nebraska Bird Review
Those who came in Friday to the 4-H Camp at Halsey National Forest ran into rain there or on the way in, but Saturday and Sunday, 2 and 3 October, were bright, but a little too windy and a little too chilly to be perfect. Sixty-three registered for the meeting. Of the birds submitted for consideration, the directors selected the Scarlet Tanager at Scotts Bluff as the best and the Cattle Egret in Sioux Co. as second. (NBR 50:65 and 67). It was decided to have a new field card, on stiffer stock and smaller sized than the present …

Evaluation Of Sethoxydim & Mbr 22359 For Control Of Rhizome Johnsongrass (Sorghum Halepense) In Soybeans (Glycine Max), E. Craig Musselman
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
Johnsongrass (Sorghum halepense) is one of the most troublesome weeds in the southeastern United States. -everal herbicides have been developed to combat johnsongrass, and many new experimental herbicides with high johnsongrass control potential are presently being tested. Two of these new experimental herbicides for johnsongrass control in soybeans (Glycine max) are sethoxydim and MBR 22359.
Field experiments were conducted in 1981 and 1982 to evaluate the effectiveness of MBR 22359 preemergence and postemergence, sethoxydim in single and split applications, trifluralin in combination with mefluidide, or with glyphosate or sethoxydim in the wick, and alachior in combination …

The Problems And Prospects Of The Kimberley Pastoral Industry, R B. Hacker
The Problems And Prospects Of The Kimberley Pastoral Industry, R B. Hacker
Resource management technical reports
The pastoral industry in the Kimberley region began in the early 1880s withthe introduction of cattle overlanded from Queensland and New South Wales into the East Kimberley and with the almost simultaneous introduction, by sea, ofboth sheep and cattle into the Fitzroy Valley.Occupation of the more accessible areas was gradually achieved by theprogressive extension of these two arms of settlement which ultimately metaround the present location of Fitzroy Crossing. Extensive development of themore rugged areas of the North Kimberley came later with the construction ofreasonable access roads to the few isolated stations which had been initiallyestablished in this area.

The Effects Of Photoperiod-Temperature Interactions On Testicular Regression In The Green Anole, Anolis Carolinensis, Teri Wickelhaus
The Effects Of Photoperiod-Temperature Interactions On Testicular Regression In The Green Anole, Anolis Carolinensis, Teri Wickelhaus
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
Interrupted-night photoperiod experiments were carried out in green anoles (Anolis carolinensis) in July and August 1981 in order to explore the possibility that seasonal timing of testicular regression regulated by day length involves circadian rhythms. The influence that temperature has on testicular responsiveness to light was also assessed. Testicular weight responses to different interrupted-night photoperiod treatments were similar in anoles kept at constant warm temperatures but varied in anoles kept at constant cold temperatures. Rates of decline of spermatogenesis in response to different interrupted-night photoperiod treatments were, on the other hand, similar in anoles kept at constant cold …

Responses Of Estuarine Infauna To Disturbance. I. Spatial And Temporal Variation Of Initial Recolonization, Roman N. Zajac, Robert B. Whitlatch
Biology and Environmental Science Faculty Publications
Responses to disturbance of estuarine infauna were studied to test the hypothesis that seasonality, the estuarine environmental gradient and sediment composition would significantly affect recolonization. The study was conducted in a small estuary located in southeastern Connecticut, USA, using controlled disturbance experiments and sampling of the ambient infauna. Species composition in experimental plots and ambient sediments usually did not differ, either on a seasonal or areal basis. Numerically dominant species usually included the polychaetes Streblospio benedicti, Capitella spp. and Polydora ligni, and the oligochaete Peloscolex gabriellae. Other species included the polychaetes Scoloplos fragilis, Hobsonia florida and Nereis …

Responses Of Estuarine Infauna To Disturbance. Ii. Spatial And Temporal Variation Of Succession, Roman N. Zajac, Robert B. Whitlatch
Biology and Environmental Science Faculty Publications
Infaunal successional patterns in Alewife Cove, a small estuary in southeastern Connecticut, USA, varied significantly seasonally and along the estuarine environmental gradient. Each study site exhibited different patterns of change in species composition and abundance. However, suites of species found during succession did not differ greatly from those found in ambient sediments. Species which exhibited the most variable population changes during succession were numerically dominant tubiculous polychaetes (Streblospio benedicti, Capitella spp., Polydora ligni], and an oligochaete (Peloscolex gabriellae). Other species which exhibited significant activity were the polychaetes Scoloplos fragilis, Hobsonia florida and Nereis virens, the hemichordate Saccoglossus kowaleski, and the …
