Breeding Ewe Lambs To Lamb First As Yearlings, Nyle J. Matthews Oct 1993

Breeding Ewe Lambs To Lamb First As Yearlings, Nyle J. Matthews

Archived Agriculture Publications

Getting the highest possible production from ewes is a goal of every sheep producer. Sheep respond well to management and will usually pay a producer for the extra times he spends in caring for them. Breeding ewe lambs is a practice that can pay dividends but requires the right management to make it work. Many years ago this practice was deemed unwise because it severely affected the young mothers in many ways. Modern research has spelled out requirements in terms of size and management that make a successful, workable program.

The Syringomycins: Finding Their Role In Nature, Jon Takemoto May 1993

The Syringomycins: Finding Their Role In Nature, Jon Takemoto

Faculty Honor Lectures

About ten years ago, I began looking for a research problem in the field of plant-microbe interactions. As the name implies, this is the study of how plants and microorganisms associate-either for their mutual benefit or at the expense of one partner. An example is symbiotic nitrogen fixation between leguminous plants and root-colonizing bacteria. Both benefit-the plant gains nitrogen in a useful form and the bacteria gain nutrients and protection. A better understanding of a plant-microbe interaction system could be used to benefit agriculture. For example, boosting nitrogen fixation would mean less petroleum-derived nitrogen fertilizers. These interactive biological systems and …

Tournament-Style Debate As A Natural Resources Education Technique, Matthew S. Carroll, F. J. Alt, A. M. Brandenburg, W. Schlosser, Steven E. Daniels Jan 1993

Tournament-Style Debate As A Natural Resources Education Technique, Matthew S. Carroll, F. J. Alt, A. M. Brandenburg, W. Schlosser, Steven E. Daniels

Sociology, Social Work and Anthropology Faculty Publications

Curricula in the natural resource professions are placing increased emphasis on course work dealing with the larger philosophical and value-related questions surrounding resource management. This development presents a challenge to instructors, particularly in terms of encouraging active student involvement in such courses. The use of tournament debate format provides one useful means for fostering such involvement while also aiding in the development of oral communication skills. The authors' experience with the use of debate suggests that certain modifications to traditional debate format aid in its successful classroom use.

An Empirical Model Of Gastric Evacuation Rates For Fish And An Analysis Of Digestion In Piscivorous Brown Trout, E. He, Wayne A. Wurtsbaugh Jan 1993

An Empirical Model Of Gastric Evacuation Rates For Fish And An Analysis Of Digestion In Piscivorous Brown Trout, E. He, Wayne A. Wurtsbaugh

Watershed Sciences Faculty Publications

The gastric evacuation rates of brown trout Salmo trutta (0.9–1.6 kg) feeding on fingerling rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss (3.5–7.6 g) were measured in the laboratory at five temperatures (4.5, 9.0, 14.0, 19.0, and 22.5°C). Instantaneous gut evacuation rates (Re) increased exponentially with temperature (T): Re = 0.053se^0.073T, r^2 = 0.98; they varyied from 7%sh^–1 at 4.5°C to 29%sh^–1 at 22.5°C. Linear regressions described the relationship between time and qualitative measures of fish digestion, thus allowing investigators to determine how long an ingested fish would be identifiable at different temperatures. An analysis of published evacuation rates (N = 121) of 22 …

Snake River Sockeye Salmon Habitat And Limnological Research, David Teuscher, Doug Taki, Wayne A. Wurtsbaugh Jan 1993

Snake River Sockeye Salmon Habitat And Limnological Research, David Teuscher, Doug Taki, Wayne A. Wurtsbaugh

Watershed Sciences Faculty Publications

Historically, thousands of Snake River Sockeye salmon returned to the Sawtooth Valley to spawn. Evermann (1896) reported that the Sawtooth Valley Lakes were teeming with red fish. Bjornn (196~) estimated that 4,360 sockeye returned to Redfish Lake in 1955. These numbers no longer exist. In the 1980's, less than 50 Snake River sockeye salmon survived to spawn (Bowler 1990). Since 19-90, only 13 sockeye have returned. Because of recent declines, the Shoshone-Bannock Tribes (SBT) petitioned the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS-) to list Snake River sockeye as endangered. As a result, Snake River sockeye were listed and the Bonneville Power …

Effects Of Moonlight And Daylight On Hydroacoustic Estimates Of Pelagic Fish Abundance, Chris Luecke, Wayne A. Wurtsbaugh Jan 1993

Effects Of Moonlight And Daylight On Hydroacoustic Estimates Of Pelagic Fish Abundance, Chris Luecke, Wayne A. Wurtsbaugh

Watershed Sciences Faculty Publications

To determine how moonlight and daylight affect hydroacoustic estimates of fish abundance, we used a dual-beam transducer and echo integration to survey pelagic fish (primarily Bonneville ciscoes Prosopium gemmifer) in Bear Lake, Utah and Idaho. During the new moon, the fish were dispersed (not schooling) below the thermocline, chiefly at the depths of 10–20 m. At full moon, they were dispersed but much closer to the bottom, where they were difficult to detect. Acoustic estimates offish density and biomass during full moons were approximately 50% of values derived during new moons. A diel survey during a new moon indicated that …

Clonal Propagation In Non-Aspen Popular Hybrids, Y.W. Chun

Aspen Bibliography

Species and hybrids of Populus are considered ideal species for pulpwood, lumber production, and woody biomass production because of their rapid growth, ease of establishment through stem or root cuttings, and relative ease of coppice regeneration [19].

Volume And Value Growth Of Hardwood Trees In Wisconsin, J. Buongiorno, J.S. Hseu Jan 1993

Volume And Value Growth Of Hardwood Trees In Wisconsin, J. Buongiorno, J.S. Hseu

Aspen Bibliography

The volume of healthy trees of commercial size in the maple-birch forest type measured during the last two Forest Inventory Analysis surveys of Wisconsin grew at 2 to 3%/yr for sawtimber, and 3 to 4% for pole timber, with substantial differences among species. However, from 1967 to 1989, the real price of logs decreased or remained constant for most grades and species. The decrease was especially large for high grade logs. The only exceptions were red oak and elm, whose prices increased at i to 2 %/yr, for all grades. As a result, the average value growth rate of the …

Thermophilic Starter Cultures: Another Set Of Problems, C. J. Oberg, Jeff Broadbent Jan 1993

Thermophilic Starter Cultures: Another Set Of Problems, C. J. Oberg, Jeff Broadbent

Nutrition, Dietetics, and Food Sciences Faculty Publications

Increased consumer demand for yogurt and Italian cheeses, particularly Mozzarella, over the past decade has intensified production demands on thermophilic starter cultures. Dramatically elevated production rates within existing facilities have created problems analogous to those experienced years ago by the dairy industry for mesophilic lactococci when Cheddar cheese production increased dramatically. In contrast to mesophilic lactococci, however, diversity among lactic genera that contain thermophilic species has impeded the progress of microbiological research required to meet these challenges. For example, the bacteriophages that attack these cultures are becoming an important commercial problem, yet little is known about them. Another unique characteristic …

The Nfiii/Oct-1 Binding Site Stimulates Adenovirus Dna Replication In Vivo And Is Functionally Redundant With Adjacent Sequences, Lianna K. Etchberger, P. Hearing Jan 1993

The Nfiii/Oct-1 Binding Site Stimulates Adenovirus Dna Replication In Vivo And Is Functionally Redundant With Adjacent Sequences, Lianna K. Etchberger, P. Hearing

Biology Faculty Publications

The inverted terminal repeat (ITR) of adenovirus type 5 (Ad5) is 103 bp in length and contains the origin of DNA replication. Cellular transcription factors NFI/CTF and NFIII/OCT-1 bind to sites within the ITR and participate in the initiation of viral DNA replication in vitro. The ITR also contains multiple copies of two conserved sequence motifs that bind the cellular transcription factors SP1 and ATF. We have analyzed a series of viruses that carry deletions at the left terminus of Ad5. A virus carrying a deletion of the NFIII/OCT-1, SP1, and ATF sites within the ITR (mutant dl309-44/107) was wild …

Biological Action Of Mycotoxins, Roger A. Coulombe Jr. Jan 1993

Biological Action Of Mycotoxins, Roger A. Coulombe Jr.

Animal, Dairy, and Veterinary Science Faculty Publications

Mycotoxins are ubiquitous, mold-produced toxins that contaminate a wide variety of foods and feeds. Ingestion of mycotoxins cause a range of toxic responses, from acute toxicity to long-term or chronic health disorders. Some mycotoxins have caused outbreaks of human toxicoses, and at least one mycotoxin, aflatoxin B1, is a presumed human hepatocarcinogen. As part of a comprehensive effort to curtail the adverse health effects posed by mycotoxins, substantial research has been conducted to determine the mechanism of action of mycotoxins in animals. This review presents some of the current knowledge on the biological action of four diverse classes of mycotoxins—aflatoxin …

A Prairie Dog Abatement Program In San Juan County, Utah, Terry A. Messmer, Jim Keyes, Roy Mcdonald

All U.S. Government Documents (Utah Regional Depository)

Four species of prairie dogs are native to the plains and plateaus of the western United States. The most abundant and widely distributed of these is the blacktailed prairie dog, (Cynomys ludovicianus). This species has been a frequent topic of discussion at previous Great Plains Wildlife Damage Control workshops. Black-tailed prairie dog ecology and management was the topic of a panel discussion held at the Fifth Great Plains Wildlife Damage Control Workshop, in Lincoln, Nebraska (Timm and Johnson 1982) and the theme topic at the Eighth Great Plains Wildlife Damage Control Workshop in Rapid City, South Dakota (Uresk et al. …
