The transition from aquatic to terrestrial locomotion was a landmark event in the evolutionary history of vertebrates. In order to better understand how early tetrapods were able to transition to land, salamanders have proven to be a useful animal model. With current research focusing heavily on the anatomy, physiology, and kinematics defining salamander terrestrial walking capabilities, this experiment was designed to extract information about the kinematics of salamander walking underwater. Underwater walking of salamanders was analyzed on smooth and rough substrates to provide more insight into the early vertebrate water-to-land transition. Human and black bear metacarpals and metatarsals, or the hand and foot bones and bear paws, are well documented on a gross anatomical level. The macrostructural data comparing the two species is useful in distinguishing the species unless fragmented bone is found. In this case, histological data is used for clearer and more accurate comparisons but, research that compares the metapodials of black bears and humans on a microstrutural level is scarce. G protein coupled receptors (GPCRs) are membrane proteins with many functional roles. This family of receptors is expansive, with several subfamilies. Here, a member of subfamily A, rhodopsin (Rho) is studied. Mutations in rhodopsin have been linked to the disease retinitis pigmentosa (RP). Some of these mutations have been found to disrupt the dimerization/oligomerization of Rho at the TM4/TM5 proposed dimerization interface, causing pathogenesis of RP. In this study, two mutations of transmembrane helix 5 were investigated for changes in dimerization and stability, cell trafficking, and signaling. Metabolomics is used to examine metabolite fluctuations in biological systems and enables the diagnosis of metabolic disorders and the identification of new therapeutic targets.1 Liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) was utilized to develop a new method using a T3 column to separate small molecule nutrients and vitamins in a tissue sample. Initial tests of column performance used standard solutions; the amount of metabolites identified and the elution profile of these metabolites was examined. Human identification primarily uses long bones of the body such as femora and tibiae which have a high cortical bone amount, these are thought to contain the highest amount of DNA. However, current research shows this is not the case, cancellous bone could contain more DNA in the porous spaces than dense cortical bone. This study aims to measure the variation in the amount of cortical and cancellous bone taken from sampling sites of seven individuals from ten different skeletal elements: femur, tibia, middle rib, calcaneus, first cuneiform, patella, third metacarpal, third metatarsal, first distal phalanx, and cervical vertebra. Globalization and a rising need for greater production from the agricultural system have increased the use of fertilizer by farms across the entire country. The purpose of this experiment was to observe the effects of aqueous nitrate (commonly found in many fertilizers) on the metabolic rate and hemolymph lactate concentration of freshwater crayfish. After exposure, there was no observed change in metabolic rate, but there was a significant decrease in hemolymph lactate concentration in the groups exposed to nitrate.

Abstract

Exogenous and endogenous retroviruses (RV) have been known to induce vacuolar central nervous system neuropathology. Two mice which were juvenile inbred Rocky Mountain White (IRW), showed signs of spontaneous degenerate motor neuron disease. Signs included wasting, unkempt fur, adduction reflex upon tail elevation, kyphosis, and stilted gait by postnatal day 18 (P18). Brains and spinal cords were examined with H&E staining and stained with a broadly reactive retrovirus antibody. When compared to brains of mice with normal vacuolar pathology as well as mice infected with prototypic non-neurovirulent RV, Fr57E and prototypic neurovirulent RV FrCasE, the subject showed less severity …

A wetland plant’s ability to tolerate flooding is important to determining where that plant can grow. Previous studies have shown the optimal flood tolerance of Mimulus ringens is between -2cm and -6cm (Fraser & Karnezis, 2005). This experiment expands on these previous experiments by testing variation in water levels instead of maintaining the water levels at one height throughout the experiment. Eph receptor tyrosine kinases (RTKs) are activated by membrane-bound ligands called ephrins. Eph RTKs are divided into two subclasses, each activated by a specific classes of the ligand ephrin. The overexpression of Eph receptors is correlated to cancer cell metastasis in several different types of cancers. Studies with the EphA2 extracellular domain (ECD) and ephrinA1 ligand have shown that upon binding of ephrin to the receptor, EphA2 undergoes increased oligomerization and activation. Orthopedic surgeries have continued to increase, but the material of choice remains constant: titanium. Titanium has become the benchmark implant material due to its durability and non-immunogenic properties. Historically, the scientific and medical communities have taken a corticocentric view on consciousness, emphasizing the need for a cortex in producing the conscious experience. The preserved consciousness observed in hydranencephalic children and decorticated rats suggests that some form of consciousness may be produced by a subcortical network. The brainstem, a phylogenetically ancient and conserved brain structure, could serve as the major integrative machinery to produce this form of consciousness, which is called affective consciousness—the evolutionary antecedent to the reflective consciousness that allows humans to reflect on their experiences. Listed as vulnerable by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) the Olive Ridley sea turtle contributes to the stability of an ecosystem by transferring nutrients and energy to both the terrestrial and oceanic environment [1]. Costa Rica holds some of the most prominent nesting beaches for Olive Ridley sea turtles in the World. Collection and relocation of surveyed nests to monitored hatcheries increases the success rate significantly [2]. This study investigated endospanin expression in zebrafish by performing western blots to identify which tissues expressed endospanin. A feeding study was also conducted to see if endospanin expression varied in fed versus unfed fish. After tissues were dissected, protein assays were performed on homogenized tissues and then gels were run using gel electrophoresis. The primary antibody rabbit anti-endospanin peptide was used on the finished blots. Chemiluminescence was then used to visualize the blots using GeneSnap software. Endospanin expression was evident in heart, liver, and ovary tissues. The feeding study showed that endospanin expression in liver tissue was not significantly different …

The Florida Manatee (Trichechus manatus latirostris) is a threatened species that primarily feeds on marine and estuarine seagrasses. Over the past several years, the seagrass coverage in the Indian River Lagoon has varied due to human influence and algal blooms. This led to an unusual number of manatees dying and potentially, to remaining manatees shifting their diets. It can be difficult to decipher why or how diets shift, however, creating a timeline using stable isotopes can help address this challenge. Are bacteria capable of undergoing oxygenic photosynthesis under low-light conditions inside of caves? Inside of an Australian cave, Chlorophyll f was recently discovered. This chlorophyll pigment was found to demonstrate the capability for photosynthesis, suggesting that Chlorophyll f extends the spectrum of usable light needed for oxygenic photosynthesis (Lars, 2015). Due to the findings in this study, a team went to Carlsbad Caverns to see if there were any bacteria capable of undergoing oxygenic photosynthesis under low light.
