Organochlorine Levels In Seawater And Sediment From The Florida Gulf Coast, If Present, Are Low. , Richard B. Philp
Richard B. Philp
Seawater and sediment from the Florida panhandle coast were assayed for a panel of 28 organochlorine insecticides and PCBs. No samples exeeded the detection limits of the analytical technique, which were well below levels reported for other ocean locales. Organochlorine levels in this area of the Gulf must be very low. This does not preclude their biomagnificatioon up the food web.

The Inclusion Of Women Cyclists In The Olympics, Shelley Lucas
Shelley Lucas
This paper provides preliminary findings from my study of the International Olympic Committee's (IOC) decision to allow women cyclists to compete in the Olympic Games. Male cyclists had contested both road and track cycling events since the resumption of the modern games in 1896, but women were not allowed to compete until 1984—and initially, they were limited to participating in the road race only.

Larvae of the California newt (Taricha torosa) exhibit striking predator- avoidance behavior, escaping to refuges in response to a chemical cue from cannibalistic adults. In laboratory flow-tank experiments, stream water collected near free-ranging adults induced hiding responses in 100% of the larvae tested. Solutions prepared by bathing adults (in field and laboratory) also evoked strong hiding behaviors. Insensitive to adult feeding status (fed or starved), and clearly not an excretory product, the chemical cue was released from adult skin (i.e., in swabs of adult backs, sides, and bellies). Tetrodotoxin (TTX) was found in skin swabs of adults and in bathwater …

Cell Surface Expression Of A Peptide Encoded By The Unrearranged Tcr-Vβ8.2 Gene, Janice Abbey, Mark Hulett, Helen O'Neill
Helen O'Neill
Germline transcription of T-cell receptor (TCR) genes has been described in early lymphoid cells. The most common explanation for this phenomenon is that transcription of unrearranged Vβ genes directs gene usage during the rearrangement event. Germline transcription of the TCR-Vβ8.2 gene has been detected in a precursor T-cell line, C1-V13D, which shows no rearrangement at any of the TCR gene loci. This cell line also shows weak binding of specific anti-V 8.2 antibody to the cell surface, consistent with expression of a truncated TCR chain. RT-PCR has been used to confirm expression of spliced germline transcripts of TCR-Vβ8.2 in C1-V13D …

Heterogeneity Amongst Splenic Stromal Cell Lines Which Support Dendritic Cell Hematopoiesis, Geneviève Despars, Helen O'Neill
Heterogeneity Amongst Splenic Stromal Cell Lines Which Support Dendritic Cell Hematopoiesis, Geneviève Despars, Helen O'Neill
Helen O'Neill
Long-term cultures (LTC) producing dendritic cells (DC) have been previously established from spleen. LTC support the development of nonadherent cells comprising small DC progenitors and immature DC. Similarly, the splenic stroma STX3, derived from a LTC which ceased DC production, can support DC development from precursors in overlaid bone marrow. The STX3 stroma is an immortalised mixed population of endothelial cells and elongated spindle-shaped cells, thought to be fibroblasts. The stromal cell components of STX3 have been studied here. A panel of 102 cell lines was established by single-cell sorting. A range of clone morphology, including cobblestone cells and elongated …

Edgar Lehr
A new species of the Eleutherodactylus nigrovittatus Group is described from five localities, at elevations of 1800-2760 m in cloud forests in the Cordillera Oriental in central Peru (Distrito de Paucartambo, Departamento de Pasco). The new species is assigned to the Eleutherodactylus nigrovittatus Group, and differs from all described species therein by having a combination of smooth skin on the venter, undilated discs on the digits, Finger I and Finger II of variable length (slightly shorter, slightly longer or of equal length), Toe III and Toe V of variable length (slightly shorter, slightly longer or of equal length), and a …

Taxomic Status Of Some Species Of Peruvian Phrynopus (Anura: Leptodactylidae), With The Description Of A New Species From The Andes Of Southern Peru, Edgar Lehr
Edgar Lehr
Based on external morphological and osteological characters, Phrynopus fallaciosus and Phrynopus flavomaculatus are placed in the Eleutherodactylus nigrovittatus Group, and the latter is reported for the first time in Peru (Departmento de Piura). Based on external morphological characters, Phrynopus laplacai is considered to be a junior synonym of P. wettsteini. The type locality of P. wettsteini in Peru is considered as doubtful, and the distribution of the species seems to be restricted to Bolivia. Based on external and internal morphological characters, including comparatively large testes, Phrynopus spectabilis is placed in the synonymy of Pleurodema marmorata. Males of several species of …

We have developed a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) technique for imaging Feridex (superparamagnetic iron oxide [SPIO])-labeled islets of Langerhans using a standard clinical 1.5-Tesla (T) scanner and employing steady-state acquisition imaging sequence (3DFIESTA). Both porcine and rat islets were labeled with SPIO by a transfection technique using a combination of poly-l-lysine and electroporation. Electron microscopy demonstrated presence of SPIO particles within the individual islet cells, including beta-cells and particles trapped between cell membranes. Our labeling method produced a transfection rate of 860 pg to 3.4 ng iron per islet, dependent on the size of the islet. The labeling procedure did …

A New Species Of Marsupial Frog (Anura: Hylidae:Gastrotheca) From The Amazonian Slopes Of The Cordillera Oriental In Peru, Edgar Lehr, William Duellman, Linda Trueb
Edgar Lehr
A New species of marsupial frog, Gastrotheca, with prominent cranial crests is described from humid montane forest on the eastern slopes of the Andes in Departmento de Pasco, Peru. The frog ahs an exceedingly robust cranium that most closely resembles that of G. cornuta; however, the cranial crests of G. cornuta are less well developed, and less obvious externally, than those of the new taxon. Within the genus Gastrotheca, one of the most variable parts of the skull is the squamosal, which has a variety of articular arrangements with the maxilla, the pterygoid, and in some taxa, the frontoparietal. In …
