Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
In Jamaica, violence is an all too common approach to the settlement of disputes. Scholars and informed observers have pointed to the genesis of this practice in a history of violence, oppression and inequity rooted in slavery and the colonial system. Policy-makers and crime fighting strategists have advanced a range of recommendations for its abatement. The intervention of civic institutions, such as schools and churches, is acknowledged as beneficial for informing, training and healing persons afflicted by violence, particularly within inner city communities. The library as a central civic organization to provide social and cultural good for peace education and …

Publications and Research
In this column, I give a brief overview of five ways that libraries can be incorporated into a learning management system (LMS), ordered from easiest to most difficult to scale, or in other words, least to most personal:
- Insert the library in the LMS template
- Offer embeddable LibGuides to faculty
- Create a collection of graded modules for faculty use
- Create an online library mini-course
- Embed a librarian in a course

In the spirit of this year’s theme of “opening access,” our panel highlights how library faculty are making technology more accessible for the CUNY community. Despite the rising costs of journal prices and the stagnation of library budgets, librarians have employed low-cost and free techniques to improve access to library services. The panelists’ projects provide helpful examples of CUNY librarians’ work to increase access for our communities through technology.

Students will practice this process by engaging in a discussion about the reliability of a specific resource. They will be encouraged to contribute to an in depth evaluation of a resource as a group.
This session will give students the …

Queering The Library Of Congress, Carlos R. Fernandez
Queering The Library Of Congress, Carlos R. Fernandez

This poster will attempt to apply the techniques used in Queer Theory to explore library and information science’s use and misuse of library classification systems; and to examine how “queering” these philosophical categories can not only improve libraries, but also help change social constructs.
For millennia, philosophers, such as Plato and Aristotle, have used and expounded upon categories and systems of classification. Their purpose is to make research and the retrieval of information easier. Unfortunately, the rules used to categorize and catalog make information retrieval more challenging for some, due to social constructs such as heteronormality.
The importance of this …
