Dpanther: Benefits And Challenges Of Building And Managing Your Own Digital Repository, Kelley Rowan, Rebecca Bakker

This article addresses the benefits and challenges associated with building your own digital repository platform and managing content, technical hurdles, and partners. The authors discuss the advantages of building a repository that can evolve as standards in the field do and how to handle the problems that arise when you are both the metadata manager and technical support. The authors also discuss difficulties their partners have experienced with the platform and lessons learned. It is the hope that this information will provide those who may be either managing a digital repository or considering a new digital platform, relevant information that …

PubSpace is a repository of full-text peer-reviewed articles resulting from NASA-funded research going back to 1961. The National Center for Biotechnology Information has integrated PubSpace into PubMed Central, a freely available repository of medical research. Using an established, stable, government-hosted platform for PubSpace seems to make sense. However, the lack of clear branding, an uneven application of phrase searching, and a missing thesaurus of NASA terminology highlights that this integration may not be the best.

Online Access To American Diocesan Archives: Current State And Lessons For Other Repositories, Colleen Hoelscher

A 1997 circular letter from the Pontifical Commission for the Cultural Patrimony of the Church said that “In the mind of the Church, archives are places of memory of the Christian community and storehouses of culture for the new evangelization.”1 This is true of the archives and libraries of all denominations; they are the repositories of a church’s history and thus a vital resource for understanding a church’s future. As such, it is essential that the official repositories of an organized religion, such as Catholic diocesan archives, be accessible to scholarly researchers, genealogists, members of the faith, and other …
