An Affinity For Users: Data Set: Survey Results, Athena Hoeppner, Meg Scharf

Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

Data from an Affinity Mapping mapping project. Students entering the UCF Library were invited to help redesign the Libraries web site by constructing Affinity Maps. The participants worked in groups ranging in size from 1 to 4 students who may or may not have known each other before the project. Participating students were provided with magnets pre-printed with terms and categories from the Libraries web pages. Students were instructed to select the terms which they thought should be on the Libraries web site and to organize the selected terms on a magnetic white board. Markers and blank magnets for their …

The Problems Of Subject Access To Visual Materials, John K. Jespersen, Heather P. Jespersen Sep 2004

The Problems Of Subject Access To Visual Materials, John K. Jespersen, Heather P. Jespersen

Faculty Publications

This article discussed the problem of giving subject access to works of art. We survey both concept-based and content-based access by computers and by index/catalogers respectively, as well as issues of interoperability, database and indexer consistency and cataloging standards. The authors, both of whom are trained art historians, question attempts to mystify fine art subject matter by the creation of clever library science systems that are executed by the naive. Only when trained art historians and knowledgeable catalogers are finally responsible for providing subject access to works of art, will true interoperability and consistency happen.

You've Gotta Read This: Summer Reading At Musselman Library (2004), Musselman Library

You’ve Gotta Read This: Summer Reading at Musselman Library

Each year Musselman Library asks Gettysburg College faculty, staff, and administrators to help create a suggested summer reading list to inspire students and the rest of our campus community to take time in the summer to sit back, relax, and read. These summer reading picks are guaranteed to offer much adventure, drama, and fun!

The spring 2004 issue of You’ve Gotta Read This! expanded to include recommendations from Gettysburg College staff and administrators in addition to faculty. Popular titles for this year were A Short History of Nearly Everything by Bill Bryson and Dan Brown’s The Da Vinci Code.

A Reference Model For Providing Statistical Consulting Services In An Academic Library Setting, Kristi Anne Thompson, Daniel M. Edelstein

Leddy Library Publications

Princeton University Library, through its Data and Statistical Services (DSS) unit, goes further than many libraries in providing consulting on statistical methods as well as software support for data library users. Princeton requires all third and fourth year undergraduates to do independent original research papers and theses in their disciplines of concentration. These requirements create a clientele of students who need to conduct relatively sophisticated statistical analysis, but who may or may not possess the necessary skills required to do so. This paper describes the model we employ at Princeton DSS to help these patrons, drawing on our experience as …

Managing Staff Concerns And Expectations During A Library Merger, Adriaan Swanepoel

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences
