In October 2016, the Diversity Council of Libraries and Educational Technologies produced book displays in Carrier and Rose Libraries that focused on "Understanding Black Lives Matter." The council wanted to provide information on this social movement within the context of national history and racial identity. A list of books that covered topic areas of criminal justice, Jim Crow, racism, and the Black experience - among others - was generated, along with two informational placards. One placard placed the Black Lives Matter (BLM) movement within historical and social context, while the other placard offered a preemptive response to the question "Why …

In an effort to address declining university retention rates and to reach students who may not make it to the library for research help, the Sherrod Library at East Tennessee State University (ETSU) is in the process developing a peer-mentoring program. This program is one way the library can help the institution in its efforts raise student retention rates and improve student success. In 2017, the University Libraries of Grand Valley State University (GVSU) began a partnership with GVSU’s Office of Undergraduate Research and Scholarship (OURS) which extended the OURS Scholars Summer Program to include the Library Scholars Summer Program. The goal of the Library Scholars Summer Program is to “provide students with the opportunity to have an intensive research experience using the library’s resources and collections.”1 Students are mentored or co-mentored by library faculty and receive a $2,000 stipend for twenty hours of commitment per week for ten weeks, culminating with a product that enhances the library for other users and contributes …

This article examines work building a digital humanities community at Salem State’s Berry Library. The initiatives are comprised of a three-pronged approach: laying groundwork to build a DH center, building the DH project Digital Salem as a place-based locus for digital scholarship and launching an undergraduate internship program to explore ethical ways of creating innovative research experiences for undergraduate students. Together, these initiatives constitute an important move toward putting libraries at the center of creating DH opportunities for underserved student populations and a model for building DH at regional comprehensive universities.

Evaluating Scholarly Book Publishers—A Case Study In The Field Of Journalism., Tina M. Neville, Deborah Boran Henry

By adapting multiple metrics used for journal article evaluation and replicating recent publisher metrics, the authors tested methods for evaluating scholarly book publishers. Using monographs published in journalism between 2007 and 2011 as a test case, results indicate these methods may be useful to other scholarly disciplines.

This work treats an enduring sociopolitical issue that again captured public attention in summer 2014 with the police shooting of Michael Brown in Missouri (too recent to be included in the reviewed work). Purpose – Many colleges and universities require both undergraduate and graduate students to plan and conduct research as a part of graduation requirements. However, a number of barriers exist for both instructors and students in understanding and conducting research. A small group of, The College at Brockport, instructors who had taught introductory research and research methodology gathered together with librarians as a faculty learning community (FLC) to share information about their instructional methods for teaching research skills. Eastern Kentucky University (EKU) Libraries began exploring the institutional repository (IR) landscape in 2009 with the intention of publishing electronic theses and dissertations (ETDs), journals, special collections, images, videos, sound files, or anything else that would fit a need for us. The hosted systems we examined were effective as either platforms for displaying special collections or platforms for managing publishing processes. However, we didn’t find a system that did both of those things well.

Albertsons Library has successfully leveraged the use mobile devices for helping students learn research skills. Librarians are now going to classrooms and teaching two instruction sessions — 1) finding information and 2) evaluating information. The library sessions provide hands-on, active learning opportunities for student teams, built around the use of iPads to explore library resources. In fall 2012, this included instruction to seventy-four classes in Boise State's "University Foundations 100" course, the first course in our general education program. Library use is strongly linked with student persistence in higher education, and Latino students have lower rates of academic library use and proficiency than other racial/ethnic groups of students. This study explores Latino undergraduate students’ perceptions of the academic library and library staff and identifies the conditions which impede or facilitate the students’ use of the library. Using a multiple case study design, this study describes the experiences and perceptions of undergraduate students who identify as Latino and attend a four-year public research-intensive university in the Midwest.
