Problem-Based Learning Inside And Out: Multiple Roles For Librarians, Jolene Miller
Problem-Based Learning Inside And Out: Multiple Roles For Librarians, Jolene Miller
Jolene M. Miller
As an active learning technique, problem-based learning benefits students by encouraging them to apply what they have learned in class to real-world problems and by improving their information literacy skills. Librarians working in institutions with problem-based learning are most familiar with with these students through reference encounters. Our participation in problem-based learning, however, should not be limited to the reference desk. Librarians can and should play multiple roles in their institutions' problem-based learning curricula. This poster describes five levels of librarian participation in problem-based learning (reference assistance to students, information literacy training for students, consultations with departmental faculty regarding available …

This paper reports on a portion of a larger ongoing project. We address the issues of information organization and retrieval in large, active commercial websites. More specifically, we address the use of classification for providing access to the contents of such sites. We approach this analysis by describing the functionality and structure of the classification scheme of one such representative, large, active, commercial websites: eBay.com, a web-based auction site for millions of users and items. We compare eBay’s classification scheme with the Art & Architecture thesaurus, which is a tool for describing and providing access to material culture.

A Changing Bridge For Changing Times: The History Of The West Boston Bridge, 1793-1907, Dale H. Freeman
Dale H. Freeman
Master of Arts Thesis, June 2000: This thesis examines the construction in 1793 of the West Boston Bridge, the first bridge to span the Charles River between Boston and Cambridge, and its successors at the same location in 1854 and then 1907 (the Longfellow Bridge). It is a study of the impact of these bridges on the commercial development and urban settlement patterns of both Cambridge and Boston, and it sets the construction of each bridge in the historical context of the period in which each was built. The thesis utilizes a variety of primary sources drawn from the Cambridge …

Mental Health Parity: National And State Perspectives 2000: A Report To The Florida Legislature, Bruce Lubotsky Levin, Ardis Hanson, Richard Coe, Sara A. Kuppin

By failing to appropriately treat adults and children with severe mental illness, we incur enormous social costs through payments for disability benefits (Medicaid, SSI, SSDI), increased medical expenses, accidents and suicides, avoidable criminal justice proceedings, lost productivity, and increased need for homeless shelters and services. People who are underinsured are forced by arbitrary caps and limits to increasingly rely on the public sector. By providing parity for mental health, Florida will bring mental health into the mainstream of health care and become a leader in dispelling the prejudice that surrounds treatment of persons with severe mental illness.

Informing The Nation Jacksonian Style: The Ideological Impetus For, And Impediments To, The U.S. Government’S Informing Function During The Antebellum Period, John Walters
John Walters
This article examines the development of the U.S. government's informing function during the antebellum period. Particular attention is paid to the ideology of Jacksonian democracy, as expressed through such prominent organs as the Democratic Review and through such representative thinkers as Jeremy Bentham, George Bancroft, and William Leggett. Examined are the ways in which the ideology of democracy not only shaped and contributed to, but also impeded the development of, the informing function of government.

Paul A Soderdahl
In 1998 The University of Iowa Libraries was the recipient of a grant from the Library of Congress/Ameritech National Digital Library Competition in support of a project to digitise a portion of its unique and extensive Redpath Chautauqua Collection. Although the staff of the Information Arcade at The University of Iowa Libraries has extensive experience in instructional technology, this was the first opportunity for them to engage in the digitisation of a large text collection of rare materials. This article will describe the processes undertaken in the project as well as the challenges when the theory of how to approach …

Outreach To Public Health Professionals: Lessons Learned From A Collaborative Iowa Public Health Project, Linda Walton, Seana Hasson, Faith Ross, Elaine Martin
Linda J. Walton
In 1995, the National Library of Medicine (NLM) and the Public Health Service (PHS) recommended that special attention be given to the information needs of unaffiliated public health professionals. In response, the National Network of Libraries of Medicine (NN/LM) Greater Midwest Region initiated a collaborative outreach program for public health professionals working in rural east and central Iowa. Five public health agencies were provided equipment, training, and support for accessing the Internet. Key factors in the success of this project were: (1) the role of collaborating agencies in the implementation and ongoing success of information access outreach projects; (2) knowledge …
