"Diversity Statements In Collection Development Policies In Libraries At Cccu Institutions: Applying Antiracism And Critical Theory To Academic Library Policies", Robin D. Lang Dec 2022

"Diversity Statements In Collection Development Policies In Libraries At Cccu Institutions: Applying Antiracism And Critical Theory To Academic Library Policies", Robin D. Lang

The Christian Librarian

The Council of Christian College and Universities (CCCU) has made diversity a major focus of the organization, but commitment to diversity among individual CCCU institutions and within their departments, such as academic libraries, varies. Diversity is a core value of the library profession and complements the CCCU’s commitment to diversity, yet despite this convergence of interests, a review of the literature indicates that nothing has been written about diversity initiatives within academic libraries at CCCU institutions. This study was devised to begin to fill this gap in the literature and, thus, starts to investigate racial diversity within Christian higher education …

Incarnational Librarians: Liaisons Moving Into The Neighborhood, Ellen Hampton Filgo

The Christian Librarian

The concept of “incarnational ministry,” which is often taught in cross-cultural ministry or missions training, offers practical value to academic liaison librarianship, namely: getting out of the library and going to where the users are, being a life-long learner, and modeling humility during interactions with patrons.

Creating A Father-Friendly Library: An Examination Of The Importance Of Fatherhood Support In Today's Library Service Model, Michael D. Wells

The Christian Librarian

Research shows the importance of fathers being present in the lives of children. The absence of support for fathers, perpetuates a long standing generational decline in the viability of men as a whole. This work seeks to introduce librarians to the possibilities of libraries offering support for dads. With library use among males being very low, this is also an opportunity for libraries to serve those who are often forgotten. This paper illustrates how the National Fatherhood Initiative (NFI) offers a path to help dads and explains how the NFI and libraries can partner through the creation of programs.

Is Authority Always Constructed And Contextual? A Classical Challenge To The Framework For Information Literacy, Nathan Rinne Jan 2016

Is Authority Always Constructed And Contextual? A Classical Challenge To The Framework For Information Literacy, Nathan Rinne

The Christian Librarian

The 2015 Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education (or Framework) is the latest effort of academic librarians to provide relevant guidance for the teaching of information literacy. One claim made within this “living document,” in line with current academic trends of constructivism and social constructivism, is that “Authority is Constructed and Contextual.” Questions are raised concerning authority’s relationship to the idea of truth, and an effort is made, largely through a Socratic method of inquiry, to delve into the meaning of the Framework’s statement on authority using the further explanations provided concerning this particular “frame,” as well as the …

We decided that our librarians would take the initiative to reach out to the students in order for the library to be more welcoming. Our ultimate goal was try to get students to see the library as a place of learning and community, and not just a place to pick up books."

Designing Information Literacy Instruction For Adult Learners, Laura Rhoden Jan 2015

Designing Information Literacy Instruction For Adult Learners, Laura Rhoden

The Christian Librarian

An issue currently facing many academic librarians involves the challenge of designing information literacy instruction for nontraditional students, particularly adult learners. Increasingly, adults are enrolling in college later in life to complete undergraduate degrees. Because information literacy instructional research and instructional methods commonly focus on traditional students, academic librarians struggle to design information literacy instruction that meets the needs of this more mature population. This article examines information literacy instructional design basics, characteristics of adult learners and adult learning theory, as well as presents examples for designing information literacy instruction for adult students.

Christian Librarians And The Library Bill Of Rights: A Survey Of Opinions And Professional Practice, Scott Kaihoi Jan 2014

Christian Librarians And The Library Bill Of Rights: A Survey Of Opinions And Professional Practice, Scott Kaihoi

The Christian Librarian

This study used a survey methodology to discover how Christian librarians working in academic libraries responded to the American Library Association’s (ALA) ethical standards as embodied in the Library Bill of Rights (LBR). The results showed that while the Christian librarians surveyed largely support the LBR and adhere to it professionally, their interpretation of its sometimes ambiguous language is made through the lens of a Christian worldview and can conflict with the ALA’s interpretation. Of particular concern to the respondents were issues of collection development and access to content like pornography, violence, or other similar material that conflicts with Christian …

Library Research Instruction For Doctor Of Ministry Students: Outcomes Of Instruction Provided By A Theological Librarian And By A Program Faculty Member, Charles D. Kamilos, Rodney Birch Jan 2014

Library Research Instruction For Doctor Of Ministry Students: Outcomes Of Instruction Provided By A Theological Librarian And By A Program Faculty Member, Charles D. Kamilos, Rodney Birch

The Christian Librarian

At some seminaries the question of who is more effective teaching library research is an open question. There are two camps of thought: (1) that the program faculty member is more effective in providing library research instruction as he or she is intimately engaged in the subject of the course(s), or 2) that the theological librarian is more effective in providing library research instruction as he or she is more familiar with the scope of resources that are available, as well as how to obtain “hard to get” resources.

The Importance Of Digitization In Teaching-Oriented University And College Libraries, Craighton Hippenhammer Jan 2013

The Importance Of Digitization In Teaching-Oriented University And College Libraries, Craighton Hippenhammer

The Christian Librarian

An increasing number of university and college libraries have started digitization programs, and there are good reasons why they are doing so. First, we are in the middle of revolutionary change as to how ideas get published and distributed. Over 50 percent of scholarly publishing has gone digital, and over 20 percent has gone open access. Governments worldwide are beginning to require that tax-supported research be published in open access venues. Secondly, it is imperative that academic institutions increase their archives’ digital presence. Traditional approaches to preserving institutional histories are being lost because many archives continue to preserve only paper …

Faith And Learning In The Reference Interview, Lee Anne Paris Ph.D. Jan 2009

Faith And Learning In The Reference Interview, Lee Anne Paris Ph.D.

The Christian Librarian

The reference interview provides a number of opportunities for Christian librarians to model the integration of faith and learning. When conducting reference interviews, librarians may have the chance to: 1) show a willingness to go the extra mile, 2) provide users with tools for seeking information successfully, 3) discuss information ethics, 4) exhibit openness to different points of view, and 5) demonstrate commitment to seeing individuals as God does. Ultimately, the reference interview can be a means to demonstrate that the life of the mind and the life of the spirit can (and should) be inextricably intertwined for a Christian …

More Than Just A Number? The Impact Of Age And Generational Affiliation On Christian Academic Librarians’ Beliefs About The Future Of Librarianship And Higher Education, Kimberley Wilcox

The Christian Librarian

This article investigates the relationship between academic librarians’ demographic characteristics and their beliefs about the future of academic librarianship and higher education. The researcher administered a survey to a group of academic librarians at Christian colleges and universities, with the intent of identifying possible correlations between particular demographic characteristics, such as age and generational affiliation, and four pre-established belief constructs. Statistical analysis of the survey results revealed that no significant differences exist between age groups, generational groups, experience levels, geographic locations, or type of institution with regard to Christian academic librarians’ beliefs about the future of academia and academic libraries.

Retooling The Profession: Librarianship In An Era Of Accountability And Competition, Gregory A. Smith Jan 2009

Retooling The Profession: Librarianship In An Era Of Accountability And Competition, Gregory A. Smith

The Christian Librarian

Librarianship has changed substantially in recent years. We who work in libraries must continually acquire new knowledge and skills. We must adapt to the reality that academic libraries, along with their parent institutions, face increased accountability. The functions that many of us have thought to be at the core of our profession are slipping from our grasp and will leave behind a mere managerial role. Nevertheless, many academic libraries will find a viable future by adopting and taking seriously the role of supporting learning. As we look at disruptive innovators in the information and learning scene, we should consider carefully …

A Rubric Of Shared Leadership: “Revolutions Are No Trifles”, Steven L. Baker Jan 2009

A Rubric Of Shared Leadership: “Revolutions Are No Trifles”, Steven L. Baker

The Christian Librarian

In a letter reflecting back on the heady times of revolt against the tyranny of England, John Adams makes the observation that “revolutions are no trifles.”1 Adams and other founders of the new republic knew full well the seriousness of declaring independence and setting out on a new course of governance for the colonies. While that is true on the macro level of geo-politics it is also true on the micro level of organizational culture. Embarking on a dramatic change in social structure, whether great or small, ought not to be taken lightly. Thorough planning and careful execution are important …

Utilizing Online Software For Surveys, Alice B. Ruleman

The Christian Librarian

In institutions where assessment is part of our everyday vocabulary, we are always looking for ways to collect the data that we need in a more efficient manner. Online surveys may be one answer. There are some major advantages in using online surveys but there are also some critical disadvantages especially concerning representative population samples. In order to make an informed decision, we need to determine if and how these advantages and disadvantages affect our situation. We also need to understand what features are offered in these programs so that we can select a program that meets our own needs …

The Impact Of The Christian Faith On Library Service, Stanford Terhune Jan 2006

The Impact Of The Christian Faith On Library Service, Stanford Terhune

The Christian Librarian

The library profession is in flux and uncertainty due to its lack of a well-founded philosophy of service. The Christian faith provides the necessary philosophical framework. Three implications follow from the application of a Christian worldview to library practice. First, Christian librarians should provide access to collections that will allow students to integrate faith and learning. Second, they should demonstrate love and concern for library users by offering diligent, humble service.Third, they should teach students the ethical use of information resources. Christianity has an impact on “library service” in three areas. First, the word library presumes a collection of library …
