Michele Gibney

Collaborative learning environments can utilize Web 2.0 tools for the purpose of teaching information literacy (IL) and information and communication technology (ICT) to college students. The California Maritime Academy (CMA) Library administered IL course is used in this paper to present a Web 2.0-based lesson unit. The authors designed a plan after conducting a demographic and stakeholder analysis of CMA and adhered to standards set forth by the ACRL as well as IL/ICT competency levels. The goals included the comprehension and utilization of wiki editing and website building in group-oriented projects, wherein a "Think Model" was used as a proctoring …

Library Theory And Multicultural Youth Services, Michele Gibney

Michele Gibney

This paper will examine some of the global theoretical approaches in providing multicultural services to youths as well as some first-hand examples experienced in the United States by the author. In an international context the field of youth services generates significant attention due to the importance of raising the education levels of adolescents. The three theoretical models under review are urbanization, cultural planning, and social inclusion. When applied to working practices of library service, these models serve as a baseline for innovation—the resultant ideas of which this paper will connect to multicultural youth services. The paper will show that urbanization …

The paper describes the history of the public library in Santa Barbara from 1870 to 1926 while taking into account two of the thematic underpinnings of the American library tradition: women in the profession and the importance of books and libraries in the community. It is divided into three sections including, the importance of books and libraries, women librarianship, and the history of the Santa Barbara Public Library. Overseas Librarians: “The Specter Of Voluntarism And The Hobgoblin Of Non-Professionalism”, Michele Gibney

Michele Gibney

The following paper is on working abroad in a foreign country. It focuses primarily on Peace Corps volunteers—how they become involved with library development, what practices they instigate to promote the library’s collection, and how they create sustainability for the library. All of these elements combine, in my thesis, to show the “professional” nature of an overseas librarian. I argue that the perception of overseas librarians goes through peaks and valleys— the wartime conditions fostered international cooperation between allied powers and thus overseas librarians during the 1940’s were perceived as facilitators of international communication, the 1970’s were a slump in …

In the text Foundations of Library and Information Science by Richard E. Rubin and the online lectures for LIBR 200 at SJSU taught by Deborah Hansen, the history of information and librarianship is detailed and given scope. This paper will summarize these points as they have been detailed in the readings and then examine them from a personal perspective, one by one. Many interesting …
