Paul A Soderdahl

Link resolvers, including Ex Libris’ SFX, use OpenURL to provide library patrons with context-sensitive links, such as the ability to move quickly from a citation in an abstracting and indexing database to the full text. In SFX, information for determining the appropriate links is maintained in the knowledge base, which contains details about a library’s electronic holdings and other information about electronic information resources. This article describes SFX functionality, what the service looks like from a patron’s point of view, and how it can be of particular assistance to a serials librarian.

based on instructional delivery mode. Groups consisted of an on-campus class with face-to-
face instruction, an on-campus class with a Web-based library tutorial, and a Web-based
class with a Web-based tutorial. Data were collected immediately prior to instruction and
again 6 weeks after. Analysis indicated self-efficacy levels and learning outcomes
significantly increased across all groups after instruction.

A Microscope Or A Mirror?: A Question Of Study Validity Regarding The Use Of Dissertation Citation Analysis For Evaluating Research Collections, Penny Beile, David Boote, Elizabeth Killingsworth Jul 2004

A Microscope Or A Mirror?: A Question Of Study Validity Regarding The Use Of Dissertation Citation Analysis For Evaluating Research Collections, Penny Beile, David Boote, Elizabeth Killingsworth

Penny Beile

Use of dissertation citation analysis for collection evaluation was investigated. Analysis of 1842 education dissertation citations from three institutions suggests the assumption of doctoral student expertise in their use of the scholarly literature may be overstated. For purposes of developing research collections, dependence on dissertation citation analyses should proceed cautiously.

Becoming A Subject-Specialist Librarian, Brenna Helmstutler Jun 2004

Becoming A Subject-Specialist Librarian, Brenna Helmstutler

Brenna Helmstutler

Before pursuing my MLIS, I had a Master’s degree in Counseling and eight years of experience in higher education. As I began applying for positions before graduating in December 2003, I knew that I wanted to work in academic libraries and that my experience would be an asset, but I questioned whether I would get to directly use my Counseling degree. Two months after graduation, I began work as a subject-specialist (liaison) librarian for Counseling & Psychological Services as well as 3 other related programs.

Many academic libraries use the liaison model, in which librarians are assigned to work with …

Issues Surrounding The Administration Of A Credit Course For Medical Students: Survey Of Us Academic Health Sciences Librarians, Jolene Miller Jun 2004

Issues Surrounding The Administration Of A Credit Course For Medical Students: Survey Of Us Academic Health Sciences Librarians, Jolene Miller

Jolene M. Miller

Objectives: For librarians developing a credit course for medical students, the process often involves trial and error. This project identified issues surrounding the administration of a credit course, so that librarians nationally can rely more upon shared knowledge of common practices and less upon trial and error. Methods: A questionnaire was sent to the education services librarian at each medical school listed in the 2000 AAMC Data Book. A second questionnaire was sent to those librarians who did not return the first one. Results: Of the 125 librarians surveyed, 82 returned the questionnaire. Of those 82, only 11 offered a …

Electronic Reserve Services At Unc-Chapel Hill: Faculty And Student Perceptions Of Personal Control, Access, And Service Quality., Charles Cobine Jun 2004

Electronic Reserve Services At Unc-Chapel Hill: Faculty And Student Perceptions Of Personal Control, Access, And Service Quality., Charles Cobine

Charles Cobine

This paper examines the current state of practice and management of electronic course reserve systems. The results of a Fall 2003 survey of 89 faculty, graduate, and undergraduate users of the UNC-Chapel Hill E-Reserves system, which uses Docutek ERes, are presented. Complementary use of course management software, the influence of copyright, and need for copyright management features are discussed. Survey questions addressed attitudes of users toward customer service from Reserves staff; legibility of materials; preferences for paper vs. the electronic; the user-initiated, navigability-related, and environmental limitations of access; information about points of access; printing services; and perceptions of usability.

Zines And The Library, Richard A. Stoddart, Teresa Kiser Jun 2004

Zines And The Library, Richard A. Stoddart, Teresa Kiser

Rick A Stoddart

Zines, loosely defined as self-published magazines, provide a cultural insight to the time in which they are published, making them a genre that libraries may want to consider collecting. Due to their ephemeral nature, however, they create collecting, cataloging, and preserving challenges to libraries. Few libraries across the country have met these challenges and maintain zine collections. Although no two libraries met the challenges in the same way, their unique approaches to zine collections may inspire other librarians to investigate the appropriateness and feasibility of zine collections

Connecting Diversity To Management: A Study Of Career Development Patterns Of Library Managers In Selected Arl Member Libraries And Arl Lcdp Participants, La Loria Konata, Tim Zou

La Loria Konata

This study focuses on diversity in library management. The impetus for our study is based on Thomas and Ely’s Paradigms for Managing Diversity. The first paradigm addresses the “discrimination-and-fairness” issues in business management and measures success in diversity initiatives in terms of how well a company does in recruitment and retention of minority employees. This paradigm aims to increase the number of minorities employed and correct any discrimination and unfairness in the hiring and promotion process. The Spectrum Scholars Initiative is a good example of this. The second paradigm focuses on the aspects of “access-and-legitimacy” of workforce diversity. Employees are …

Finglish, Kent Randell Mar 2004

Finglish, Kent Randell

Kent Randell

On her first day in the Americas, Finnish Professor Marja-Liisa Martin was told by her hostess: Artturilla on paita uunissa. Translated from Finnish this meant: Arthur has a shirt in the oven. However, translated from Finglish, the sentence makes a lot more sense: Arthur has a pie in the oven.1 Similar confusing, often comical, exchanges have been happening for about 100 years. Finglish is what happened to the Finnish language when Finns, apart from their mother-land, adapted to the English speaking environs of the United States and Canada while being kept apart from linguistic changes in Finland.

Encouraging Liberal Arts Undergraduates To Become Librarians: A Mellon Funded Project, Jennifer Masunaga, Emily Berman, Emily Bergman, Marla Peppers

Jennifer Masunaga

From 2003 through 2009, Occidental College participated with Oberlin, Swarthmore, Wellesley, Atlanta University Center, Johnson C. Smith, and St. Andrews College to encourage liberal arts college undergraduates, particularly underrepresented minorities, to become librarians. The program included a presentation to all students in the fall semester about an important issue concerning libraries, part-time spring internships, full-time summer internships an introduction to librarianship curriculum, a summer leadership institute, a full-time post-baccalaureate fellowship, and library school scholarships. Occidental's experience was quite successful at mentoring future librarians, and eight graduates have become librarians from the 4 1/2-year program. Emily Bergman was Interim College Librarian …

College And University Context For Library Human Resource Management, William Welburn Jan 2004

College And University Context For Library Human Resource Management, William Welburn

William C Welburn

This book provides a comprehensive look at issues that shape the nature of Human Resources in academic libraries. Libraries in varying academic environments have undergone tremendous change during the last two decades of the 20th century as they have sought redefinition as learning organizations. As organizations they have experienced significant changes in the role and definition of professionalism, along with challenges from such shifting workplace demographics as age and ethnicity and technological issues, which have also had direct impact on the recruitment and retention of staff. Much of the attention of human resources administrators in academic libraries has focused on …
