Effective collaboration between archives and technical services can increase the discoverability of special collection materials. Archivists at the University of Dayton Libraries began using Archive-It to capture websites relevant to their collecting policies in 2015. However, the collections were only made available to users from the University of Dayton page on the Archive-It website. Content was isolated in a separate platform and was not promoted to users. Working together, the team of archivists and technical services librarians incorporated the web archive collections into the Libraries’ EBSCO Discovery Service (EDS) discovery layer. A local data dictionary was created based on OCLC’s …

Effective collaboration between archives and technical services increases the discoverability of special collection materials. Archivists at a medium-sized institution had been using Archive-It to collect websites for a few years, but the information was isolated in a separate platform and wasn't effectively marketed to users. Working together, the team of archivists and technical services librarians incorporated the website collections into the discovery layer. Metadata was added at the seed level and indexed on a single, user-friendly platform. Attendees learned about implementing digital archive collections and explored how to increase their visibility through marketing.

In 2016, the speakers embarked upon a multi-institutional project to compare print and e-book usage across four Southern California institutions (Claremont Colleges Library, Loyola Marymount University, Pepperdine University, and University of Southern California). The preliminary results of this comparative usage analysis, presented as a poster session at the Charleston Conference, revealed that print books in certain art and architecture classes and subclasses are used over e-books, suggesting “leanings” in format preferences of users.
While this collaborative research project provided provocative insights into art and architecture e-book usage, it also raised important research methods questions related to collaborative analysis using multiple …

Creative, interdisciplinary partnership and collaboration with university faculty is an essential function of every academic library, whether for course design and integration of information literacy in the curriculum, strategically building the library collections, or designing programming for the community. Over the past six years at the William H. Hannon Library at Loyola Marymount University (LMU), a program created to highlight and promote faculty publications and creative works has evolved into a keystone of our annual programming lineup. The series, called Faculty Pub Night, provides LMU faculty with the opportunity to share their work with students, university staff, other faculty …

When library staff create collaborative projects on their own, are these efforts discordant or harmonious? How does library leadership conduct different groups for cacophony or symphony? What management models empower library staff to continue exciting collaborative projects while learning to play together in tune?

The college campus is a complex ecosystem of services and resources. Academic library outreach efforts offered in partnership with Student Affairs units can support the whole student as they navigate this ecosystem. This presentation offers one librarian's experience collaborating with Student Affairs units such as health, counseling, and recreation centers. A mental model for this work that draws on the metaphor of organic gardening helps frame the remarks and reflections.

In 2017, a team of librarians and archivists at Western University developed local Information Literacy Learning Outcomes (ILLOs). The resulting document outlined the skills and understanding that Western University students should demonstrate at the end of a four-year undergraduate degree—specifically, the skills relating to accessing, assessing, and applying information. This article focuses on the challenges and opportunities encountered during the collaborative process as well as the approach employed by the team in the development of these ILLOs.
Six librarians and archivists in very different roles formed the project team. Despite coming from diverse backgrounds, the team recognized that there could …

The radical act of replacing a traditional OPAC and ILS with a hosted library services platform (LSP) and web-scale discovery (WSD) system creates the impetus for libraries to rethink core workflows and practices. Both of these tools have the potential to greatly improve access to library collections and enhance user experience, but only if the implementation is a collaborative effort between different stakeholders, technical experts and subject librarians, grounded in a thoughtful selection process that emphasizes user needs. Furthermore, because this model removes the traditional OPAC, subject librarians must take on the challenge of understanding the tool and work as …

Greater Than the Sum of Our Parts: Building Support for OER from Existing Services on Campus Matt Ruen, Grand Valley State University Libraries At Grand Valley State University, the Libraries and several campus partners--including campus IT and offices that support faculty research and effective teaching--have come together to provide support for the creation and adoption of Open Educational Resources (OER) on our campus. But rather than developing brand new programs or asking for additional resources right at the start, we realized that each of our units already offers services that could support faculty creating and using OER. Through our OER …

Albertsons Library Data Management Strategic Agenda outlines areas of emphasis and specific activities that the library will engage in over the next two years (January 2015 - December 2016) in support of its data management services initiative. These activities will help define an evolving framework where the library serves as an active partner throughout the scholarly and research lifecycle. The foundation for this framework is a commitment to collaboration, open information sharing and discovery, and a focus on providing point of need services.

Purpose This paper describes how a course-integrated blog was used to facilitate the learning of information literacy skills. It also reports on how the effectiveness of the blog was evaluated. Design/methodology/approach The blog was made the centerpiece of library support offered to a first-year politics course. With the support of the faculty member involved, students were required to post answers to weekly library research skills questions posted to the blog. The quality of student responses was examined using a simple assessment rubric. Also, a survey was administered to students to determine perceived usefulness. Findings The evaluation of blog posts showed …

Cleveland State Taps Into Faculty And Campus Needs, Barbara Loomis, Theresa Nawalaniec, Marsha Miles
Barbara Loomis
At Cleveland State University, the library collaborates with faculty and departments on projects such as:
- capturing and sharing conferences;
- publishing scholarly journals; and
- creating and disseminating open educational resources.
These endeavors have led to additional opportunities in other areas, such as working with students and with the greater Cleveland community. In this webinar, Barbara Loomis, Project Coordinator, Marsha Miles, Digital Initiatives Librarian, and Theresa Nawalaniec, Sciences and Engineering Librarian, at Cleveland State’s Michael Schwartz Library will discuss their work with faculty and departments and the other projects that these have often led to.

Open Educational Resources (OERs) are gaining traction as students and faculty search for affordable, open access alternatives for learning resources. Find out how one public university library took advantage of the push for OERs and enthusiasm after a library-sponsored OER workshop to publish an open access textbook. This presentation will describe the library’s involvement in developing the project, balancing the workload between librarians and the faculty member, and promoting the new resource on campus. Key takeaways include the importance of communicating, dealing with permissions, taking advantage of graphic design skills, and more. Attendees will leave with ideas about how to …

With the rising costs of tuition and textbooks, Open Educational Resources (OERs) are becoming increasingly important. The university library, in collaboration with faculty, is a natural leader of OER initiatives at institutions of higher education. Cleveland State University’s Michael Schwartz Library embraced this leadership role by assisting a faculty member with developing an OER, which involved balancing the workload between librarians and the faculty member, determining successful modes of communication, taking advantage of graphic design skills, and more. The success of this initial collaboration has led the Library to expand its support of OER initiatives on campus.

Electronic media, hypertext (electronically created text with links to other electronic texts), and social networking have transformed historians' work. Digitization has changed the way that libraries, archives, and museums curate and present historical resources to researchers. Digitization has also altered the way historians access and use these sources. Toledo's Attic is a collaborative digital history project involving the Ward M. Canaday Center for Special Collections, The University of Toledo Department of History, the Toledo-Lucas County Public Library, the Maumee Valley Historical Society, and WGTE Public Media. The site, which focuses on Toledo and Northwest Ohio’s late nineteenth- and twentieth-century history, …
