An Exploration Of Two Information Literacy Open Learning Object Repositories: Value, Content, And Engagement, Tiffanie Lynn Ford-Baxter

Information literacy (IL) open learning object repositories (LORs) provide a space for librarians to find and exchange instruction resources and lessons. Given many librarians enter the workforce with little or no formal training or educational opportunities to learn about pedagogy, these repositories are indispensable resources to the Library and Information Science field. This study explored the contents of two popular IL LORs, Project Cora and the Association of College and Research Libraries Framework for Information Literacy Sandbox, to uncover how users engage with the resources and how the repositories differ. Providing targeted experiences for first-year students both inside and outside the classroom is essential for building connections and creating a foundation for skill development necessary for academic success. Many first-year programs include a standalone course for incoming students or specific content weaved into existing course offerings. Information literacy skill-building holds an important place in these efforts; therefore, instruction librarians are provided additional opportunities to collaborate with faculty and reach students. Depending upon the size of the institution, however, the sheer number of first-year courses combined with shrinking library staff pose challenges. In Fall term of 2014, three instructors of Portland State University’s School of Community Health, in collaboration with the school’s subject librarian, deployed digital badges to certify information literacy and critical thinking outcomes in their classes. The badge curriculum, which was developed by mapping library learning outcomes to course learning outcomes, was designed to teach and assess students’ understanding of and skills acquisition in website evaluation, information formats, database searching, citing and plagiarism, and contributing knowledge to the information landscape. OER provided the chance to create a needed text for an initiative to bring the Oregon State Seal of Biliteracy to Higher Education, starting at Chemeketa Community College.
This text differs from a traditional 200 level languages course as it includes a broader focus to incorporate ACTLF's four language domains, and the materials are presented in-context to meet the unique needs of a Heritage Language Learner. The relevancy of the content has also been updated to touch on contemporary issues and themes, as well as bring-in new forms of media.

Criminology and Criminal Justice Faculty Publications and Presentations
This article reviews the current operations of Multnomah County, Oregon’s public law library and assesses the feasibility of creating a legal resource and self-help center within the library. The article reviews common governance models of law libraries and common self-help models, supplemented by interviews with key stakeholders. We conclude that the county could greatly benefit from a self-help center and make recommendations of best practices.

Founded and directed by activist Carole Pope (1944-2013), Our New Beginnings was a non-profit residential transitional and alternative sentencing program for women navigating corrections and criminal justice in Portland, Oregon that operated from 1980 to 1992. During this time, the program served over 3,000 women and their children at a non-recidivism rate of 84%. Through Our New Beginnings, Pope also worked with the Portia Project and Project Link-Up, two Oregon non-profit programs dedicated to connecting women in prison with legal and custodial support and services.

This case study investigates the digital literacy acquisition process for learners within a corrections setting. The digital literacy program was part of the reentry program available to some individuals approaching their release date. The case study describes the lab within a prison, and details of how mentor-facilitated, self-paced learning was organized. Examination of the learner path in a corrections setting highlights how learners perceived the relevance of digital literacy in their lives; how they overcame their fears of computers or technology and their self-confidence grew; and potential changes in their self-identity, which often led to imagining new and different possible …

Being information and science literate are crucial in an age when scientific developments influence the political arena and vice versa. In order to become active and responsible citizens, students must understand such issues as global warming and stem cell research. Furthermore, they must be lifelong learners, capable of researching and educating themselves about new scientific developments. These are some of the complex issues that information literacy educators must address. Academic librarians have long understood the importance of, and argued for, the curricular integration of information literacy. The literature shows strong evidence of librarians collaborating with faculty, peer tutors, and other on-campus constituencies in an effort to facilitate discussion and acquisition of information literacy skills and concepts. The literature points to a likely collaboration, that of libraries and writing centers, in light of their corresponding missions and endeavors.
