Going It Alone: Successes And Failures Developing A Single-Staff Systematic Review Service, Jenessa Mcelfresh

Southern Chapter/Medical Library Association Annual Conference

Objective: The purpose of this study is to document the successes and failures of solely developing and supporting a systematic review consultation service. While these insights are specific to the systematic review service creation process, the tips can be applied to any service idea met with high demand and little resources.

Methods: The systematic review service described in this study was developed at a non-health sciences specific university library at a Carnegie-R1 research institution. The service has a multi-tiered approach created using best practices identified from systematic review services offered at other institutions, and the strengths and weaknesses of the …

Collaboration Picnic: Developing And Maintaining A Growing Network Of Research Partners Across The United States For Successful Research Production, Jenessa Mcelfresh, Rachel Keiko Stark

Southern Chapter/Medical Library Association Annual Conference

Objective: The objective of this study was to highlight and document the ways that collaboration, specifically across great geographic and institutional differences, can be an asset when engaging in research in health sciences librarianship.

Methods: Impact and success were measured through formal outcomes (publications/presentations) and informal observations, primarily focusing on the collaboration experiences of two health sciences librarians in non-health sciences academic libraries. The history of collaboration spans from 2015-present day and includes demonstrated outcomes on the local, regional, and national level.

Results: The results of this study of collaboration demonstrate that long-term research collaborations across geographic and institutional boundaries …

Future And Value: The Library As Strategic Partner, Antje Mays Oct 2019

Future And Value: The Library As Strategic Partner, Antje Mays

Library Faculty and Staff Publications

Broader economic trends spawn budget pressures for education and libraries, prompting a plethora of studies on the value and relevance of libraries. Numerous reports on economic decline in libraries and studies with mixed pronouncements on the value of libraries have led to a negative self-image within the library profession. Yet libraries' leadership in connecting learners to knowledge is at the heart of producing many of the key skills sorely needed in robust societies and economies. Librarianship has many untapped opportunities for positioning itself as a prominent strategic partner. This paper outlines current research on the economic and societal context for …

Dangerous Liaisons: Brainstorming The 21st Century Academic Liaison, Antje Mays

Library Faculty and Staff Publications

Academic liaison roles have seen massive changes over time and grown into an ever-broadening range of duties. What began as subject-focused collection involvement has evolved into a mix of instruction, reference, and various forms of course-embedded services, all while also retaining the earlier focus on subject-specific collection management.

This paper outlines current research on academic liaison roles and summarizes the interactive exchanges from the 2018 Charleston Conference Lively Session on academic liaisons. Through live polling and discussion, session participants identified key functions and core competencies for liaisons, as well as factors contributing to success or hindrance for liaison success. Key …

Review Of The Self As Subject: Autoethnographic Research Into Identity, Culture, And Academic Librarianship, Emily D. Dileo

Journal of Contemporary Archival Studies

Academic librarians have complex and numerous professional identities. We are researchers, teachers, artists, administrators and technologists. Many of us have advanced degrees in other fields, in which we may or may not remain active. We experience burnout and impostor syndrome, experience and confront racism in our workplaces, and are strongly affected by university politics and bureaucracy. In The Self as Subject: Autoethnographic Research into Identity, Culture, and Academic Librarianship, the authors tease out these complexities using autoethnographic methodology.

Better With Science: Strengthening Patron Learning, Heather Simmons, Alyson Drake, Joseph Lawson

Presentations

A baseline understanding of cognitive theory and educational psychology concepts is critical to successful student learning. With librarians in all settings providing more teaching and training than ever, designing educational experiences with these concepts in mind will result in greater retention and understanding for their patrons. This program will discuss five important ideas from cognitive learning science and give examples of how librarians and other information professionals can incorporate those theories into their instructional offerings. Participants will then work in groups to brainstorm ways various theories can be applied as they design or restructure their own instructional programs.

Four Weeks In Normandy: A Reference Librarian In France, Carley Knight May 2019

Four Weeks In Normandy: A Reference Librarian In France, Carley Knight

The Southeastern Librarian

In the fall of 2016, I sent off a short email to the University of Caen-Normandy requesting an informal internship in their library over the summer. It was inconceivable that I would find something so promptly, but in June of 2017 I was there. In past years I had looked to see what opportunities were available to librarians, and short of a Fulbright program I could find very little. It was at that point that I decided to try a more DIY approach. Before becoming a reference librarian at Jacksonville State University in Alabama, I studied French. As a librarian, …

Auburn University at Montgomery (AUM) is a regional university located in Montgomery, Alabama. The enrollment consists of 3,990 FTE undergraduate and graduate students (Auburn University at Montgomery, 2017). The library at AUM holds nearly 600,000 volumes, excluding government documents, along with more than 100 journal databases, which support student and faculty research. Over the past five years, the materials budget has decreased more than 30%, requiring collection reductions. Initial analysis determined that in addition to other items, one of the recommended products for elimination was the American Council of Learned Societies (ACLS) Humanities E-Book project.

Systemic Workplace Barriers For Academic Librarians With Disabilities, Joanne Oud Mar 2019

Systemic Workplace Barriers For Academic Librarians With Disabilities, Joanne Oud

Library Publications

Although studies related to diversity within librarianship as a profession are increasing, few have examined librarians with disabilities—and none so far have included their voices or perspectives. This qualitative study involved interviews with ten academic librarians with disabilities in Canada. With a grounding in the social model of disability, it examines their workplace experiences and concerns and the barriers they face within the context of cultural assumptions about disability and work, finding that the major barriers encountered are lack of awareness of disability issues and negative cultural stereotypes of disability.

Librarians As Researchers And Academics, David Ehrensperger Jan 2019

Librarians As Researchers And Academics, David Ehrensperger

David Ehrensperger

It is the view of many librarians that the profession faces relevance issues in the research community, among academics. The perception, and perhaps the reality, is that scholars are standoffish when it comes to contacting librarians about their research and taking advantage of the expertise librarians possess. If this is the case, it may be due to the lack of librarian experience with the specific disciplines in which the respective faculty members are publishing, or as an academic/scholar. Learning the language of academic subjects is not enough. True participation in the publication of research and/or scholarship is required. Librarians cannot …

Cultural Humility In Libraries, David A. Hurley, Sarah Kostelecky, Lori Townsend

University Libraries & Learning Sciences Faculty and Staff Publications

Purpose: The purpose of this article is to introduce the idea of cultural humility, distinguish it from cultural competence, and argue that it has a role in librarianship. Design/methodology/approach: We use an interdisciplinary exploration of the concept of humility to understand what cultural humility means and how it differs from cultural competence and other approaches to intercultural communication in libraries.

Findings: Despite some reservations with the term itself, we find that a practice of cultural humility is more appropriate to front-line interactions in library contexts than cultural competence models.

Practical implications: Libraries looking to address issues in intercultural communication and …
