Empirical Evaluation Of Metadata For Video Games And Interactive Media, Rachel I. Clarke, Jin Ha Lee, Andrew Perti
Empirical Evaluation Of Metadata For Video Games And Interactive Media, Rachel I. Clarke, Jin Ha Lee, Andrew Perti
School of Information Studies - Faculty Scholarship
Despite increasing interest in and acknowledgment of the significance of video games, current descriptive practices are not sufficiently robust to support searching, browsing, and other access behaviors from diverse user groups. To address this issue, the Game Metadata Research Group at the University of Washington Information School, in collaboration with the Seattle Interactive Media Museum, worked to create a standardized metadata schema. This metadata schema was empirically evaluated using multiple approaches—collaborative review, schema testing, semi-structured user interview, and a large-scale survey. Reviewing and testing the schema revealed issues and challenges in sourcing the metadata for particular elements, determining the level …

Negotiating The Archive: Redefining The Event Of The Book Through Collaborative Engagement, Annie Smith, Christa Albrecht-Crane
Negotiating The Archive: Redefining The Event Of The Book Through Collaborative Engagement, Annie Smith, Christa Albrecht-Crane
Annie Smith
This collaborative paper draws on Jacques Derrida’s philosophical notion of the “archive” to argue that reading in the classroom becomes a historical and institutional activity that animates the archive as a method of organizing and referring to texts. Thus, instruction centers on intertextuality between and among texts—as in close reading, citation, quotation, and cross-referencing. The paper argues that undertaking library research means looking beyond the book to emphasize the contingent nature of the archive, focusing on the methods of information transmission and the cultural production of knowledge. Consequently, library instruction goes beyond basic searching skills to include a recognition of …

Watching Storytelling: Visual Information In Oral Narratives, James Ripley
Watching Storytelling: Visual Information In Oral Narratives, James Ripley
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
Oral narratives, though prolific, are increasingly being shared via some form of electronic mediation, and yet they are often glossed over in regard to the study of narrative. This study was designed to address the unique nature of oral narratives focusing on the information channels utilized by participants in their co-creation of stories.
A comparative case study was undertaken of three groups who employed a variety of synchronous and asynchronous electronic mediation in their storytelling. Viewed through the lenses of Narratology and Social Presence Theory a combination of participant observation and qualitative semi-structured exploratory narrative interviews were undertaken with participants …

The Big Shift: How Vcu Libraries Moved 1.5 Million Volumes To Prepare For The Construction Of A New Library, Ibironke Lawal, Patricia Selinger, Barbara Anderson
Charleston Library Conference
Virginia Commonwealth University Libraries (VCUL) has been faced with serious space problems for more than a decade. Initiatives to correct this include the digital shift. VCUL’s new policy stipulates that journal subscriptions should be electronic only, wherever available. Where publishers offer both print and online for the same price, the library donates the print instead of keeping them on the shelves. Replacing print series with the electronic version as they become available is another ongoing practice. Added to these is moving infrequently used or superseded materials to storage as a continuous activity. All these were short‐lived measures until now. In …

Squaring Up To Youth Unemployment Through Entrepreneurial Based Learning: The Library As A Panacea, Margaret Nwakaego Ngwuchukwu, Margaret Nwakaego Ngwuchukwu
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
Abstract
The unemployment situation in Nigeria is like a worm that has eaten deep into the nation’s fabric. The youth in Nigeria suffer the most because they make up the highest number of people in the country .The unemployment situation has caused macro-economic distortions in the country, it has also brought many crimes. As a result of this, there is need to train the youth to be entrepreneurial and self reliant so that the nation will be peaceful and as well prolific. The library has a role to play in inculcating the skills of entrepreneurship in the youth. Through the …

Gender Stereotypes Male Librarians Face Today, Heidi Blackburn
Gender Stereotypes Male Librarians Face Today, Heidi Blackburn
Criss Library Faculty Publications
According to the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics (USBLS) (2012), the library profession has seen a 48% (19,458) increase in males working in libraries since 1980 and the male influx is expected to increase (Minnesota, 2011) despite lingering professional stereotypes. Movies, books, and other popular media focus on the overall image of the librarian, as if only one type exists for both sexes (Duke, 1999; Garcia, 2011). These stereotypes may be misinterpreted on the faulty premise that men confront the same stereotypes in the library workplace as women. Social roles and norms are different for men and women and …

Archival Vaudeville: Rethinking Outreach With Collaborative Programming, Jennie Benford, Rachel Grove Rohrbaugh
The Primary Source
When a group of archivists in Pittsburgh started meeting for happy hours, talk inevitably turned to the great things we were working on and how we wished more people knew about the archives found in our city. Comparing notes quickly turned to making plans for a public program that would allow local archivists to introduce themselves and their repositories to an audience beyond the circled wagons of our profession. In planning for this event, several decisions were made at a theoretical level that had real impact on the structure and success of the program. The loose formula created by the …

You’ve Gotta Read This: Summer Reading at Musselman Library
Each year Musselman Library asks Gettysburg College faculty, staff, and administrators to help create a suggested summer reading list to inspire students and the rest of our campus community to take time in the summer to sit back, relax, and read. These summer reading picks are guaranteed to offer much adventure, drama, and fun!
With the 2015 collection, we again bring together recommendations from across the Gettysburg College campus—the books, movies, TV shows, graphic novels and even podcasts that have meant something special to us over the past year. Ninety faculty, administrators and staff offer up a list of 175 …

Starting Off On The Right Foot: A Library New Student Employee Orientation, James Williams Iii
South Carolina Libraries
This article is for administrators, department heads, supervisors and anyone who employs students to assist with the day to day operation of their organization and want to maximize the experience and benefit for both the student and the organization. As service is the heart of the librarianship, it is critical that anyone working in the library start with a good foundation of training, tools and expectations in order to provide high quality service regardless of what area they are employed in. This is particularly important for student employees hired by the library many of which have never held a job …
