Adventist Librarianship: Worth Writing About [Poster], Terry Dwain Robertson, Lauren Matacio

A Festschrift style publication would provide a venue for SDA Librarians to publish research and develop a body of professional literature that addresses the needs of SDA libraries and librarians. It is proposed because it does not involve specific time dead- lines and allows for short-term commitments for editorial leadership. It is also an accepted method of acknowledging and recognizing esteemed colleagues.

A History Of Collaboration, A Future In Crowdsourcing: Positive Impacts Of Cooperation On British Librarianship, Sally Ellis
Library Staff Publications and Research
This article looks at the varying definitions and usage of the term ‘crowdsourcing,’ including those that insist the term may only be applied to online activities. An argument is made that, semantics aside, the activities known as crowdsourcing, collaboration, and/or citizen science, were in use long before the current online medium was invented and should be recognized not for the terminology employed but for the mutual benefits reaped. The article addresses the strengths of such activities, including user engagement, the accomplishment of tasks otherwise not possible because of budget cuts, and diversity of viewpoint. In addition, the possible weaknesses of …

A Discussion And Suggestions On Ethical Barriers In Librarianship: Information Privacy, Controversial Materials, And Personal Beliefs, Spyros Tsompanakis
School of Information Sciences Faculty Research Publications
In this work, the author discusses three ethical issues that have become barriers in the library environment: information privacy, controversial materials, and personal beliefs. The specific issues are covered by the ALA Code of Ethics, which is a general but clear guideline. In the library’s everyday life, however, these guidelines are being challenged by the occasional or consistent behaviors of librarians, users, and administrators. The author has witnessed situations when the above mentioned ethical issues caused conflicts and threatened to challenge librarianship as a concept and the values that come with it. The author presents the LIS literature on the …

Looking At The Socialization Of Lis Students Through A Pop Culture Lens, Mary Wilkins-Jordan, Lisa Hussey
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
The LIS field is filled with pop culture images, seen and learned by our students. Learning about these images relevant to our students is indeed a task worthy of our time. We are preparing student to enter a profession with their own identity as a professional; pop culture may provide a useful tool in equipping them to do this successfully. We surveyed library students across the country to discover the LIS images they knew before starting their LIS studies and those they know now. Then we looked at sources, to discover what images they are drawing from their student life, …

This article examines four possible curricular reforms and suggests ways that law librarians can participate in a comprehensive effort to make legal education more useful.

Controlled Vocabulary Standards For Anthropological Datasets, Celia Emmelhainz
Controlled Vocabulary Standards For Anthropological Datasets, Celia Emmelhainz
Celia Emmelhainz
This article seeks to outline the use of controlled vocabulary standards for qualitative datasets in cultural anthropology, which are increasingly held in researcher-accessible government repositories and online digital libraries. As a humanistic science that can address almost any aspect of life with meaning to humans, cultural anthropology has proven difficult for librarians and archivists to effectively organize. Yet as anthropology moves onto the web, the challenge of organizing and curating information within the field only grows. In considering the subject classification of digital information in anthropology, I ask how we might best use controlled vocabularies for indexing digital anthropological data. …
