Increasing Diversity In The Profession: What Works?, Judy Sackett

Library leaders and professional organizations have for some time viewed increased diversity in the library profession as a positive goal. However, the ALA Office for Research & Statistics reports that fewer than 12% of ALA members responding to a 2012 demographic survey self-selected their race/family origin as non-White. This program will look at the various strategies being employed to increase diversity in the library profession and to assess the success of those efforts.

In an effort to address ever-shifting staffing levels and evolving service demands, staff in the Research & Instructional Services department of The D.B. Weldon Library at Western University developed and implemented a new and strategic approach to structuring their work. The ‘Portfolio Model’ provides a framework for organizing the primary functions of the department - collections, instruction and reference - while at the same time preserving liaison at its core. James White Library celebrated its 75th anniversary with a series of activities in the year 2012-2013, starting with the alumni homecoming in 2012 and projecting its capstone event during the alumni homecoming in 2013. The activities focused on how the library, first as a small brick building in 1937 filled with print resources, progressed to its current building with its technological emphasis. This article is a case study of a collaboration between the Oregon Multicultural Archives of Oregon State University, Portland State University Library's Special Collections, the Chinese Consolidated Benevolent Association (CCBA), and the Northwest News Network to preserve and make accessible a recovered box of Oregon Chinese disinterment documents. By examining what influenced and engaged each partner, this case study offers an opportunity to better understand the motivations of diverse stakeholders in a "post-custodial era" project that challenges traditional practices of custody, control, and access.

Abstract

Education is a key element in progress and change. This paper discusses the education practices and librarianship development in Pakistan in historical, present and future perspectives. Pakistan has been struggling to develop an all-encompassing identity since the founding of the state in 1947. The literature shows that education in Pakistan at all levels is characterised by low quality since independence; the contributing factors are limitation of financial resources, poor appreciation of the education priorities; inadequate delivery system and population pressure have never allowed a full expression of the desired change. Current library trends and ongoing shifts are driven by numerous factors including macroeconomic environments, technological impacts, and institutional changes. Strategic needs are as varied as the many individual libraries and their circumstances, but the need is universal for thoughtful leadership in navigating change. Creating an information fluency curriculum for a specific discipline requires preliminary work: assessing what students already know in their discipline; what they need to learn to be successful in their current course; and then what they will need to be functional in the field when they complete the remaining classes in their discipline, when they start working in their field, and/or when they move on to graduate school. This session addresses how one librarian approached faculty in a particular discipline, assessed the current teaching agenda, and planned to determine the information fluency demands of the courses.

This article presents the data-rich findings of an experiment with enlisting patron-driven/demand-driven acquisitions (DDA) of ebooks in two ways. The first experiment entailed comparison of DDA eBook usage against newly ordered hardcopy materials’ circulation, both overall and ebook vs. print usage within the same subject areas. Secondly, this study experimented with DDA ebooks as a backup plan for unfunded requests left over at the end of the fiscal year.

Methods: The University of Massachusetts Medical School’s Lamar Soutter Library through funding from the National Network of Libraries of Medicine has been a leader in educating librarians about eScience and its impact on librarianship. Fifty years ago, prior to the digital revolution, library instruction consisted of a knowledgeable librarian guiding students through the various classes of documents, with examples of recognized authorities. Each bibliographic tool was handcrafted by competent individuals, published by reputable publishers, and recommended by disciplinary practitioners. While working through these various tools was time consuming, and getting access to materials not held locally often proved slow, the student researcher could reasonably assume the sincerity and integrity of the sources. Academic Librarian Competency As Defined In The Library And Information Science Journal Literature Of 2001–2005 And 2011, Jennifer Soutter

Competency definitions continue to become more popular in Library and
Information Science (LIS) and are being used not only to describe library
positions but also as a means of assessment. This study investigates
competency in the LIS academic context using English language peer-reviewed
articles from the LIS journal literature for 2001‒2005, with findings tested by the
later inclusion of 2011 data. A quadripartite definition consisting of cognitive,
functional, behavioral, and meta-competence elements is used as a template
against which to explore definition creation and use. Results offer a template for
critical analysis of competency as found within the LIS journal …
