Going For The Gold: Recruiting Students And Engaging Administrators Through Education And Entertainment In The Library, Michele D. Behr, Maira Bundza, Barbara J. Cockrell

Western Michigan University Libraries partnered with the university administration's recruitment efforts on campus. Library staff created and hosted an evening of instructional games to provide experiential learning, social interaction, and fun in the library for scholarship-seeking millennials. Students discovered information in archival materials, compared search results in a library database and Google, examined plagiarism issues, formatted citations, and used the catalog to locate specific items throughout the library. In their evaluations, students reported they learned about finding library materials and plagiarism issues. They rated teamwork, the archival challenge, and catalog activities most enjoyable. As new subject area librarians (for the Arts and Humanities respectively) at Virginia Commonwealth University interested in collaborative possibilities, we intend to demonstrate a plan for integrating visual literacy into traditional information literacy programs, including introductory library orientation sessions. This article discusses challenges in teaching library instruction to large classes and identifies practical ways librarians can use to engage large undergraduate classes in a single session. The authors searched the literature, examined related instructional services web pages, and solicited feedback from instructional academic librarians. Various instructional techniques and activities are described. Discussion also includes areas such as classroom management, technology, risk-taking, and assessment.

Since 2001, librarians at Oregon State University's Valley Library have been working to build a "teaching library" supported by a clearly articulated instruction program. From the start, we believed that we needed to assess the teaching library's impact, not only to determine the success or failure of our efforts but also to demonstrate the need for intentional, proactive in formation literacy instruction on our campus. No single assessment tool or method proved adequate to effectively measure student learning happening both inside and outside the library. While there is no required chem. literature course for graduate students at Purdue University, a series of library ice cream seminars is offered throughout the semester as an alternative. These seminars are targeted toward new graduate students to help them adjust to the wide variety of library resources now available to them. Each seminar is focused on either a particular resource (SciFinder Scholar, Beilstein, etc.) or a topical theme (patents, citation searching, spectral information, etc.). Ice Cream Seminars For Graduate Students: Imparting Chemical Information Literacy, Jeremy R. Garritano

This article provides information on a chemical information literacy program designed primarily for new graduate students. The full implementation of this program is discussed, including defining its purpose, topics covered, content presented, methods of marketing, and evaluation. The result is a series of voluntary seminars given biweekly throughout the academic year. Seminars are based either around a particular resource or database or are centered on a topical problem that may be addressed using multiple resources. Evaluations show that graduate students are pleased with the seminars, including content covered and the format. Areas for future development and experimentation are also suggested.

The Harold B. Lee Library at Brigham Young University (BYU) recently implemented a number of information literacy strategies to help students in Biology 100, a large general education class, find resources for their term assignment. The library's services for Biology 100 students were evaluated using focus groups composed of both teaching assistants and students. The purpose of this project was to study problems English language learners (ELLs) face when doing research in U.S. academic libraries. A review of the literature indicates that ELLs face both linguistic and cultural barriers. Those barriers are related to learning expectations, library anxiety, and technology. Research on organizational culture and its influence on website design was consulted and used to compare the design of a library catalog’s interface with student responses to a library instruction session offered within Composition 101 for non-native speakers.
