"Institutional" Repositories, Redefined: Reflecting Institutional Commitments To Community Engagement, Amanda Y. Makula Nov 2019

"Institutional" Repositories, Redefined: Reflecting Institutional Commitments To Community Engagement, Amanda Y. Makula

Copley Library: Faculty Scholarship

True to their name, institutional repositories collect, preserve, and provide open access to the scholarly and creative work generated at a specific institution -- typically, a college or university. But is this focus on capturing and curating the work of institutional members -- faculty, staff, and students -- too narrow? What about institutional partnerships with the local community? By limiting the scope of the IR to the university, are we missing an important opportunity to further institutional goals, to create bridges between the institution and its surrounding neighborhoods, to foster collaboration and to cultivate goodwill? When we reimagine the collection …

Currents Of Change Ii: Reshaping The Landscape Of The University Etd Administrative Process, Jaime Goldman, Keri Baker

Staff Presentations, Proceedings, Lectures, and Symposia

The Nova Southeastern University (NSU) Oceanographic Campus Library has always had a unique challenge in that it is the final clearing house for student capstone, thesis, and dissertation binding and publication. The library has traditionally been the host of the final print publication and the liaison between the student, the program office, and the bindery. With the launch of NSUWorks, NSU’s institutional repository, 6 years ago, the library envisioned developing an innovative and effective start to finish workflow for student Electronic Theses and Dissertations (ETDs) and worked to change the physical life cycle of NSU’s theses and dissertations into a …

Evaluating Zotero, Sherpa/Romeo, And Unpaywall In An Institutional Repository Workflow, Ashley D.R. Sergiadis Sep 2019

Evaluating Zotero, Sherpa/Romeo, And Unpaywall In An Institutional Repository Workflow, Ashley D.R. Sergiadis

ETSU Faculty Works

East Tennessee State University developed a workflow to add journal publications to their institutional repository and faculty profiles using three tools: Zotero for entering metadata, SHERPA/RoMEO for checking copyright permissions, and Unpaywall for locating full-text documents. This study evaluates availability and accuracy of the information and documents provided by Zotero, SHERPA/RoMEO, and Unpaywall for journal publications in four disciplines. The tools were less successful with works authored by arts and humanities and education faculty in comparison to works authored by medicine and health sciences and social and behavioral sciences faculty. The findings suggest that publisher practices contributed to the disciplinary …

Local Language, Local Knowledge, And Local Publishing: What Can We Learn From Latin And South America?, Monica Berger Sep 2019

Local Language, Local Knowledge, And Local Publishing: What Can We Learn From Latin And South America?, Monica Berger

Publications and Research

Scholarly publishing is hegemonic: a handful of international, commercial publishers dominate. Because the system favors English-language authors at well-resourced institutions, many academics and scientists are left out. But what if there was an alternate vision for scholarship that focuses on research in local languages, where research addresses issues of local concern, and open access occurs without fees to authors? In this presentation, we’ll learn more about initiatives in other countries, why bibliodiversity and local research is so important, and more about how local research is supported internationally.

Latin and South America have proven that they can “do it for themselves.” …

Publication And Evaluation Challenges In Games & Interactive Media, Elizabeth L. Lawley

Presentations and other scholarship

Faculty in the fields of games and interactive media face significant challenges in publishing and documenting their scholarly work for evaluation in the tenure and promotion process. These challenges include selecting appropriate publication venues and assigning authorship for works spanning multiple disciplines; archiving and accurately citing collaborative digital projects; and redefining “peer review,” impact, and dissemination in the context of creative digital works. In this paper I describe many of these challenges, and suggest several potential solutions.

Your Ir As The Centerpiece For Scholarly Communications Outreach At Your Institution, Monica Berger Jun 2019

Your Ir As The Centerpiece For Scholarly Communications Outreach At Your Institution, Monica Berger

Publications and Research

Getting buy-in and awareness for your institutional repository can be challenging, especially when we have limited time and staff to devote to the IR. Outreach success requires persistence, flexibility, savvy marketing, and a focus on the long view. Before our IR, Academic Works, went live in 2016, my colleagues and I gave talks and workshops on open access and other topics. With Academic Works, our efforts now have focus and coherence. A varied outreach approach has been very helpful. In particular, print marketing has been effective. We designed a poster and other media promoting our tag line “amplify your scholarship …

Inclination For Duplication: Faculty Works In Institutional Repositories, Ashley D.R. Sergiadis Apr 2019

Inclination For Duplication: Faculty Works In Institutional Repositories, Ashley D.R. Sergiadis

ETSU Faculty Works

Faculty works (e.g. journal articles, conference proceedings) in institutional repositories (IRs) differ from other collections due to their inclination for duplication on other platforms: publisher websites, preprint servers, other IRs, etc. This characteristic can create interesting and different approaches to planning, populating, and promoting faculty works collections. Come to this roundtable discussion to talk about current and future practices related to faculty works in IRs. Share your current policies, procedures, and outreach methods. Brainstorm the ideal future for faculty works collections. And ultimately, consider possible changes to your current practices to make that future into a reality.

Opening Up Open Access Institutional Repositories To Demonstrate Value: Two Universities’ Pilots On Including Metadata-Only Records, Karen Bjork, Rebel Cummings-Sauls, Ryan Otto

Library Faculty Publications and Presentations

Introduction: Institutional repository managers are continuously looking for new ways to demonstrate the value of their repositories. One way to do this is to create a more inclusive repository that provides reliable information about the research output produced by faculty affiliated with the institution.

Description of Program: This article details two pilot projects that evaluated how their repositories could track faculty research output through the inclusion of metadata-only (no full-text) records. The purpose of each pilot project was to determine the feasibility and provide an assessment of the long-term impact on the repository’s mission statement, staffing, and collection development policies. …
