An Affinity For Users, Athena Hoeppner, Meg Scharf

It is difficult for Web designers to step into users' shoes. Affinity Mapping provides insight into user ideas. On a publicly placed magnetic board, patrons clustered library concepts and tasks into meaningful groups. A digital camera recorded the results, which were analyzed and applied during the library's Web redesign. Students entering the UCF Library were invited to help redesign the Libraries web site by constructing Affinity Maps. The participants worked in groups ranging in size from 1 to 4 students who may or may not have known each other before the project. The Benefits Of Open Educational Resources (Oers) For Faculty And Students, Larry Sheret, Lindsey M. Harper Aug 2019

The Benefits Of Open Educational Resources (Oers) For Faculty And Students, Larry Sheret, Lindsey M. Harper

Larry Sheret

Many Open Educational Resources (OERs) have been developed during the past ten years that have the same quality as those offered by major publishers. We will identify the pros and cons of switching from a traditional textbook to an OER. After the Q&A, we will work with the participants to locate an OER textbook that each participant will evaluate for possible adoption. This session is most suited to faculty who are teaching lower division General Education classes with a large number of students enrolled in a lecture or in multiple sections.

Beam It!, Amanda Adams, Sharon Whitfield

Amanda C. Adams

The Cooper Medical School of Rowan University (CMSRU) Library is using BluuBeam technology, a proximity beacon, to engage patrons and push information to them. CMSRU librarians send “beams” to supplement the curriculum and provide resource assistance virtually. The CMSRU Library received the Health Sciences Librarian Project grant funding award from the Middle Atlantic Region (MAR) of NLM, National Institutes of Health (NIH) to engage in this research. The goal, which is not yet complete, is to assess whether students’ use of library resources during case-based sessions changes when libraries send supplemental material, library tutorials, and reminders of resources that pertain …

The Digital Library Federation E-research Network (DLF eRN) is a six-month program that brings together teams from research-supporting libraries to strengthen and advance their organizational data services and digital scholarship roles. Stakeholders from Rowan University (RU) Libraries and the Division of University Research participated in the 2018 cohort and developed strategies and documentation to guide the implementation of RDM at RU. The following materials were drafted and will be implemented in the coming months: A roadmap for RDM services, a data dictionary for research data sets, a survey instrument for an environmental scan, and an IRB application.

Use Best Practices To Promote Your Library, Adeen Postar Aug 2019

Use Best Practices To Promote Your Library, Adeen Postar

Adeen Postar

Best Practices is a term dating back to the 1980s that was popularized by business writers, most notably Tom Peters and Robert Waterman in their bestseller In Search of Excellence: Lessons From America's Best Run Companies (1982). Essentially, this term implies success; that certain actions, attitudes, and programs are the most efficient and effective way of doing business and that the same measures can be used with successful outcomes in all similar organizations. But are there really best practices that can help enhance public relations for every type of law library? I believe that there are.

The Write Way: Past "Aall Call For Papers" Winners Advise The Hesitant Writer, Adeen Postar

Adeen Postar

Each year, the American Association of Law Libraries sponsors a writing competition, funded by LEXIS Publishing. Officially known as the “Call for Papers,” the competition sparks scholarship, fosters creativity, and recognizes some of the finest writing produced by the members of our profession. Winning papers are presented at the Annual Meeting and often are published in Law Library Journal. Over time, the scholarship has added to and shaped the Association’s collective wisdom.

To get a handle on how to write a winning paper, this year’s judges queried four past winners: Deanna Barmakian, Jonathan Franklin, Michael A. Slinger, and Beatrice Tice. …

To Catch A Predatory Publisher: A Study Of Stem Faculty At The University Of Central Florida, Sandy Avila, Buenaventura (Ven) Basco

Buenaventura "Ven" Basco

In today’s academic publishing environment, open access journals have become an increasingly common and used venue for publication by STEM faculty and researchers. Subject librarians at one of the largest public research institutions in the United States are tailoring workshops geared towards faculty to create awareness of predatory publishing. Our research question involved identifying STEM faculty at our institution who have published in questionable journals and bringing this to their attention through a series of faculty workshops.

This poster was presented at the American Library Association Annual Conference meeting for the Association of College and Research Libraries- Science Technology Section …
