The Archives As Classroom: A Primary Source Mini-Course, Kayla Harris, Stephanie Shreffler, Heidi Gauder

Kayla Harris

Archival and Primary Source Research (UDI 204) is a one-credit course at the University of Dayton designed to introduce students to the themes of historical empathy, visual literacy, privacy, and silences in the archives. This case study explores the pilot iteration of this mini-course, taught collaboratively with a team of six librarians and archivists. With the intention of furthering the goals of the University Libraries’ strategic plan, the course was developed to move beyond what can be accomplished during a one-shot instructional session in regard to primary source literacy. In addition to discussing the inherent challenges of developing and teaching …

A Low-Cost Framework For The Digital Preservation Of Indigenous Artwork And Languages: An Australian Case Study Review, Derani N. Dissanayake, David M. Cook Aug 2018

A Low-Cost Framework For The Digital Preservation Of Indigenous Artwork And Languages: An Australian Case Study Review, Derani N. Dissanayake, David M. Cook

Dr. David M Cook

This study examined a framework for a low-cost, sustainable solution to the challenge of the Indigenous digital preservation of culture in the form of artwork and languages. In a global sense, the traditional transfer of Indigenous culture runs the risk of information loss and inconsistency when Indigenous cultural groups compete alongside mainstream Western cultural systems. Indigenous Australian culture has been passed down through traditional means from old to young, with many works of art, and discrete languages transferred without written, printed or digitised record. The study examines the challenges associated with the process of language and artwork pertaining to Indigenous …

Librarians Assemble: Identifying, Acquiring And Promoting A New Graphic Novel Collection, Maria Atilano, Tammy Druash May 2018

Librarians Assemble: Identifying, Acquiring And Promoting A New Graphic Novel Collection, Maria Atilano, Tammy Druash

Tammy Druash

Graphic novels are a growing literary form with a growing audience. This presentation will describe how two academic librarians, one from Technical Services and the other from Public Services, combined forces to combat a common enemy: a measly collection of graphic novels that no one could find nor wanted to check out. With support from library Administration and on campus partners, our graphic novel collection went from several dozen items scattered throughout the building to almost 190 volumes in one central location. Presenters will provide best practices and lessons learned, including how to recognize the difference between graphic novels and …

You Can “Like” It On Paper Too: Reaching Digital Students Through Analog Displays, Rachael Muszkiewicz Sep 2017

You Can “Like” It On Paper Too: Reaching Digital Students Through Analog Displays, Rachael Muszkiewicz

Rachael Muszkiewicz

In response to literature on libraries as space and the Millennial generation, this chapter speaks to the importance of the academic library as both social and communal space and how to communicate with today’s college students. These case studies illustrate that students can be reached through analog displays, building an unconscious community between students as a group and students with the library. Community built within the academic library is discussed in light of these analog displays, the current library literature and via sociological positions. It is concluded that although it is thought that students want digital or online communication only, …

Negotiating The Archive: Redefining The Event Of The Book Through Collaborative Engagement, Annie Smith, Christa Albrecht-Crane Oct 2015

Negotiating The Archive: Redefining The Event Of The Book Through Collaborative Engagement, Annie Smith, Christa Albrecht-Crane

Annie Smith

This collaborative paper draws on Jacques Derrida’s philosophical notion of the “archive” to argue that reading in the classroom becomes a historical and institutional activity that animates the archive as a method of organizing and referring to texts. Thus, instruction centers on intertextuality between and among texts—as in close reading, citation, quotation, and cross-referencing. The paper argues that undertaking library research means looking beyond the book to emphasize the contingent nature of the archive, focusing on the methods of information transmission and the cultural production of knowledge. Consequently, library instruction goes beyond basic searching skills to include a recognition of …

Bridging The Community Through The May Day Fete: The May Day Celebration At Oregon Normal School, Erin Passehl-Stoddart Dec 2012

Bridging The Community Through The May Day Fete: The May Day Celebration At Oregon Normal School, Erin Passehl-Stoddart

Erin Passehl Stoddart

In 1902, a new tradition began on the Oregon State Normal School campus: the May Day celebration. Touted as an ardent joyous welcome of springtime and the most anticipated social event on campus‖, the May Day Fete featured a series of events held on a single day early in May, including the winding of the May Pole, an evening dance, costumed drills, sporting events for both men and women, jokes, singing, pageantry, the procession and crowning of the May Day Queen, and the awarding of the trophy in a challenge between the school‘s senior and junior class. May Day extended …

The Horror, The Horror: Graduate Student Information Seeking And Horror In Academia Bibliography, Lizzy A. Walker Jan 2012

The Horror, The Horror: Graduate Student Information Seeking And Horror In Academia Bibliography, Lizzy A. Walker

Lizzy A. Walker

Horror has taken a seat at the table of academia. This genre of film has spurred academia to take a closer look at them. Gender studies, the arts, philosophy, and other humanities studies can benefit from a specific reference section in regard to horror. Graduate status is seemingly a line between undergraduate and faculty patterns and, as such, there is a difference in how they conduct research and information seeking. While it is clearly their own way of gathering information, it is a combination of the motions performed by undergraduates and faculty. More specifically, graduate students in the humanities have …

Children's Book Update For 2010-2011, Gregory A. Martin

Gregory A. Martin, M.L.I.S.

Most colleges and universities with teacher training programs have collections of children's books. In many cases, the librarians who are responsible for selecting these books have a number of other responsibilities as well. The workshop for which this bibliography was prepared was designed for those busy librarians who are not always able to devote the time they would like to the selection of children’s books. It explored selected “best” picture books published during 2010 and 2011.

Finding And Creating Possibility: Reading In The Lives Of Lesbian, Bisexual And Queer Young Women, Paulette Rothbauer

Paulette Rothbauer

This study examines the voluntary reading practices of self-identified lesbian, bisexual and queer young women between the ages of 18 and 23 years. The practices associated with voluntary reading including finding, borrowing, buying, reading, sharing and talking about texts, especially those that fall into the genre of lesbian and gay literature, comprise the central theme of this study. Data collection and analysis were guided by principles of qualitative,
interpretivist inquiry. Data was collected through in-depth interviews with seventeen young women in London and Toronto, Ontario. Three main themes related to reading emerged from analysis of interview transcripts. The first of …

Visual Displays Of Information: A Conceptual Taxonomy, Scott Warren Sep 2001

Visual Displays Of Information: A Conceptual Taxonomy, Scott Warren

Scott Warren

This paper creates a taxonomic model for visual information displays looking at three levels: information design (based on Edward Tufte’s work), information architecture, and information spaces. Special attention is paid to the use of spatial and navigational metaphors in visual systems as they affect the user’s experience. Especially interesting is how a user creates an “information space” – a mental model of what he has seen, how she keeps track of where she is within a system, and how these activities fit together with the data that is being sought. Mathematics is one area that holds promise for better understanding …

Storytelling, Folktales And The Comic Book Format, Gail De Vos Jan 2001

Storytelling, Folktales And The Comic Book Format, Gail De Vos

Gail de Vos

The reading process in comics is an extension of text. In text alone the process of reading involves word-to-image conversion. Comics accelerate that by providing the image. When properly executed, it goes beyond conversion and speed and becomes a seamless whole. In every sense, this misnamed form of reading is entitled to be regarded as literature because the images are employed as a language. There is a recognizable relationship to the iconography and pictographs of oriental writing. When this language is employed as a conveyance of ideas and information, it separates itself from mindless visual entertainment. This makes comics a …

Graphic Novels And The Reluctant Reader, Gail De Vos Jan 1999

Graphic Novels And The Reluctant Reader, Gail De Vos

Gail de Vos

What has happened to influence this change? First, the quality of comic books, particularly graphic novels, is now formally acknowledged. Graphic novels, the sturdy, lengthy comic books that contain one story or a set of related stories, are now being sporadically reviewed in selection journals as well as being the focus of a large number of recent articles. But the most compelling reason is wider awareness of our highly visual culture and its impact on our youth. Far from receiving stories from television and film passively, readers of comic books are actively constructing meaning from the text and illustrations and …
