Teaching Patrons To Fish: The Educational Value Of Cancelling Requests For Locally Available Materials, Ruth S. Connell, Tschera H. Connell Dec 2013

Teaching Patrons To Fish: The Educational Value Of Cancelling Requests For Locally Available Materials, Ruth S. Connell, Tschera H. Connell

Ruth S. Connell

Expansive document delivery service for locally available materials is becoming increasingly popular, but is a learning component lost with the implementation of this service? In this study, the authors compare data from two institutions, one that provides an unadvertised document delivery service without instruction, and another that cancels requests for locally available materials with an instructional component. The behavior of each institution's patrons over a 4-year period is analyzed and found to differ at statistically significant levels. These findings will be useful for interlibrary loan policy makers who are considering whether to implement document delivery for locally available items.

An Examination Of Lending Fees At Thirty Academic Libraries In The Southeast, William Walsh, Felicity Walsh

William Walsh

Current fiscal shortfalls are projected to bring deep and long lasting budget cuts to libraries. With every budget dollar under close scrutiny, the urgency of filling patron information needs efficiently and costeffectively increases. Interlibrary loan plays an important role in filling in gaps in library collections, yet as significant budget cuts are made at libraries of all sizes, materials will be available from fewer and fewer lenders. Libraries unable to find items from those with whom they have reciprocal arrangements will be will be forced to use lenders who charge. This article examines fees associated with interlibrary lending in 30 …

Tenn-Share Statewide Library Courier Survey, David P. Atkins

David P Atkins

This is a interlibrary loan shipping and courier needs assessment survey of the Tenn-Share Library Consortium. The results will assist Tenn-Share in exploring shipping options for libraries across Tennessee. Participants will be asked to answer questions related to their institutions’ interlibrary services and resource sharing operations. The survey should take about 10 minutes to complete. There are no foreseen risks to participating in this project. Information in the responses will be kept confidential and data will be stored securely by the Principal Investigator (PI). Data will be reported in aggregate form to the Tenn-Share membership, and in subsequent presentations and …

The Consolidation Of Two Campus Interlibrary Loan Units Into One: A Partnership Between Law And Main Campus, Ruth Sara Connell Dec 2009

The Consolidation Of Two Campus Interlibrary Loan Units Into One: A Partnership Between Law And Main Campus, Ruth Sara Connell

Ruth S. Connell

Until July 2009 Valparaiso University had two campus interlibrary loan units, one serving the main campus and the other serving the law school. In the wake of a projected 15-20% campuswide budget cut, the two campus libraries investigated ways to work together to reduce costs. The libraries came together with Online Computer Library Center and Atlas Systems, Inc., to consolidate the two separate units and ILLiad databases into one. This article discusses the reasons for merging two interlibrary loan units and the steps undertaken to combine two ILLiad systems.

Turnaround Time Between Illiad’S Odyssey And Ariel Delivery Methods: A Comparison, Ruth S. Connell, Karen L. Janke Dec 2005

Turnaround Time Between Illiad’S Odyssey And Ariel Delivery Methods: A Comparison, Ruth S. Connell, Karen L. Janke

Ruth S. Connell

Interlibrary loan departments are frequently looking for ways to reduce turnaround time. The advent of electronic delivery in the past decade has greatly reduced turnaround time for articles, but recent developments in this arena have the potential to decrease that time even further. The ILLiad ILL management system has an electronic delivery component, Odyssey, with a Trusted Sender setting that allows articles to be sent to patrons without borrowing staff intervention, provided the lending library is designated as a Trusted Sender, or this feature is enabled for all lenders. Using the tracking data created by the ILLiad management system, the …
