Assessing the expertise of researchers has garnered increased interest recently. This heightened focus arises from the growing emphasis on interdisciplinary science and the subsequent need to form expert teams. When forming these teams, the coordinators need to assess expertise in fields that are often very different from theirs. The conventional reliance on signals of success, prestige, and academic impact can unintentionally perpetuate biases within the assessment process. This traditional approach favors senior researchers and those affiliated with prestigious institutions, potentially overlooking talented individuals from underrepresented backgrounds or institutions. I revised the assignment the first time teaching the class after Trump lost the 2020 election. As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, the metadata team at Clemson University Libraries facilitated a work-from-home project, during which 14 employees across two units described a collection of over 2,400 photographs. From the standpoint of both the metadata reviewers and metadata creators, this session provided an overview of the project, including how it was managed remotely. This presentation reflects a balanced cross-unit perspective on what worked well and what could be improved.

This practical session covers how Clemson University Libraries’ metadata team describes their largest digital collection of historical images. It focuses on what the team has learned from the project, including developing workflows and strategies for describing images, creating a local heading controlled vocabulary, and leveraging expertise to streamline metadata creation. The team explains the metadata management tool CollectiveAccess, shares examples from the collection, and discusses benefits of documentation. The session concludes with continued metadata challenges.

The Internet is full of reliable sources that are filled with a wealth of business information. Some of these sites are fee-based with subscription prices that are much lower than those of the large commercial databases. Unfortunately, only a single subscriber may use most of those fee-based sites. That means the librarian must turn to sites that are free to the general public. Many of these free sites rival fee-based services for quality and quantity of information.
