One of the presumed advantages of next-generation library catalogue interfaces is that the user experience is improved—that it is both richer and more intuitive. Often the interfaces come with little or no user-facing documentation or imbedded “help” for patrons based on an assumption of ease of use and familiarity of the experience, having followed best practices in use on the Web. Santa Clara University and the University of San Francisco are leveraging patron-initiated borrowing data to create a deeper and more browse-able collection in certain subject areas where patrons have shown interest. This same ILL data has also been used to strengthen the meta-collection of our consortium (LINK+) through the intentional and coordinated diversification of approval plan profiles. When we began looking at our patron-initiated borrowing data, we could see that there are call number ranges where one or both universities borrow frequently. This will be an interactive session for people who manage an acquisitions budget but don't manage the corresponding personnel who select materials (e.g. subject librarians). How do you encourage appropriate collection development decisions? How do you help revision collection development for long-time employees, or get others to change their workflows to be more efficient? How do you encourage subject librarians to make data-driven decisions? Attendees will work in groups and participate in role playing scenarios to develop strategies for working with colleagues without having explicit authority over those colleagues' work.
