Ranking Serials In Ocenography: An Analysis Based On The Indian Contributions And Their Citations, Tapaswi M. P, Maheswarappa B. S

An analysis of serials preferred and cited in various communications by the Indian oceanographers during 1963 to 1992 is presented. A shift in preference of serials from general sciences to oceanography (interdisciplinary) and to core subject in oceanography is noticed. The contributions to Indian serials showed a decrease. The implications of this trend are discussed. The rank list of serials cited by Indian oceanographers was correlated with the rank list of serials cited at international level. A negative correlation with a marginal difference of-0.214 is observed between these two rank lists. This difference is attributed to studies from different geographical …

Critically examines the issues in development of collection for libraries in the context of electronic publication and networking with special reference to formulation of policies, users, formats, storage, mode of access, selection, acquisition, bibliographical control, finance, evaluation,-and manpower. It concludes that developing a need-based, relevant and cost-effective collection, consisting of electronic and other publications in document form, requires systematic planning, and effective implementation.

Studies the collaborative research in Genetics based on authorship data collected from Genetics Abstracts 1970, 1975, 1980 and 1985. Slightly less than 80% of papers in genetics were by multiple authors. Two author papers outnumber single-author papers as well as papers with three or more authors and the proportions have changed over the years in favour of multiple authorship. The average number of papers has increased from 2•3 to 3•13 and so also the degree of collaboration from 0•70 to 0•84. The two-author papers were a maximum in 14 research fronts.
