Information literacy has been used successfully the world over as a strategy to improve access to information resources that usually cost a lot of money but, due to lack of awareness and skills of utilization, result in low or no usage at all. At James Madison University (JMU), a small team of faculty members in Libraries & Educational Technologies (LET) collaborated to develop new information literacy student learning outcomes based on the ACRL Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education. The Information Literacy Task Force was tasked with unifying the conversation around information literacy within LET and providing student learning outcomes that educators will be able to adapt into content, activities, and assessments. Information Literacy is an important skill required by the APA of undergraduate psychology students. The Association of College & Research Libraries partially defines Information Literacy as the set of integrated abilities encompassing the reflective discovery of information. Teaching Climate Change Concepts And The Nature Of Science: A Library Activity To Identify Sources Of Climate Change Misconceptions, Charity Flener Lovitt, Kristen S. Shuyler

A library activity was developed in which students found information about climate science misconceptions from popular and scientific literatures. As part of the activity, students developed a rubric to evaluate the credibility and type of literature sources they found. The activity prepared students to produce an annotated bibliography of articles, which they then used to create a training document about a climate science misconception for staff at a local science center. Evaluation of annotated bibliographies showed that students were able to distinguish between popular and scholarly literature but struggled to identify primary and secondary sources within the scholarly literature. Assignments in which students edit Wikipedia may help students learn about the complexities of information creation and production, while engaging them in researching and writing about topics related to class content. This chapter presents two case studies that illustrate how Wikipedia-based activities can be designed to achieve both chemistry and information literacy learning outcomes. In both examples, faculty partnered with a librarian to implement the Wikipedia editing assignments. Through these experiences, those involved learned about Wikipedia and its community, and identified promising practices for project requirements based on formal and informal assessment and observations. As a primer on data information literacy (DIL), this column will cover the background of the field and why it is relevant to college and university libraries serving undergraduate populations. This article includes how data information literacy relates to information literacy, competencies associated with DIL, the relevance of DIL to undergraduates, DIL in library instruction, and the reasons for library engagement with DIL. Examining DIL within the larger framework of information literacy can help outreach and instruction librarians engage with a format that may be unfamiliar to them but whose underlying foundation is well-established.

This poster describes the development and pilot of a tailored information literacy assessment tool for undergraduate allied health students. Tool development included collaboration between assessment experts, Health Science faculty, and Health Science librarians. The poster includes results from the tool deployment and next steps in applying results back into revised curriculum.

This poster provides a case study integrating ethical reasoning and debate into an undergraduate Health Sciences course on drugs uses, effects, and policies. The course instructor, Health Sciences and Nursing Librarian, and JMU Debate Team coaches collaborated on building the tiered assignment of annotated bibliographies and classroom student debates. The results document pre and post surveys of student opinions regarding each of the debate topics, providing insight on how opinions changed through the course of this assignment.

James Madison University has had required information literacy competency exam situated within the first year of University’s General Education Program for over a decade. This test, previously the Information Seeking Skills Test (ISST) and now, Madison Research Essentials Skills Test (MREST) is directly mapped to the Association for College & Research Libraries’ (ACRL) Information Literacy Standards for Higher Education. Responses to a survey of undergraduates in a 100-level course indicate that students understand what plagiarism is and that it is a serious academic offense. However, they are skeptical as to how often plagiarists are caught. Nearly a quarter of respondents admitted that they might plagiarize if pressed for time.

Information systems professionals must be able to recognize and adapt to changing technologies to support evolving business needs. While it is impossible to accurately envision tomorrow’s technologies and business needs, it is possible to develop students’ ability to constantly survey the changing business and technology landscapes and apply critical thinking skills to draw appropriate conclusions regarding which potential trends are worth following and which are less viable. This paper makes the case for preparing undergraduate students with problem-solving and research skills and describes a successful methodology for developing these skills in an undergraduate information systems course.

Due to the rapidly changing nature of telecommunications, it is challenging to be able to introduce timely topics into this curriculum. At the same time, educators are challenged with preparing students to function in the workplace where change is a given, as on average workers spend an average of 9.25 hours per week looking for or analyzing data [4]. Initiatives to keep instruction relevant and prepare students to be information literate mandate that students be able to discover, digest, and put into context new information about technologies.
