Obstacles To Participation: The Little Free Library Edition — A Ttw Guest Post By Jonathan Pacheco Bell, Jonathan P. Bell

Jonathan P. Bell

Tame the Web, March 30, 2015. Using the example of a Little Free Library code violation controversy in Los Angeles, and drawing from my urban planning and public library experiences, I offer four cautionary lessons that make us better prepared to handle inevitable obstacles to participatory public service.

This study sought to collect data from teens and librarians about their preferences and recommendations for the effective design of physical library spaces for teens. Librarians and teens at twenty-two U.S. public libraries filmed narrated video tours of their young adult (YA) public library spaces. The researchers used qualitative content analysis techniques to analyze the video data and to develop a framework for guiding the design of effective YA public library spaces. In addition to providing specific recommendations for user-centered YA library space design, this study highlights the need for continued user input into the design and maintenance of YA …

Certification Of Librarians: An Unproven Demand, Jonathan Pacheco Bell Mar 2013

Certification Of Librarians: An Unproven Demand, Jonathan Pacheco Bell

Jonathan P. Bell

This paper examines whether certification of librarians is necessary to ensure high quality service. The paper explains the purpose of professional certification and provides a synopsis of the history of national librarian certification initiatives in the U.S. A literature review evaluates arguments supporting and opposing certification. Arguments in favor of certification are unconvincing and reveal certification supporters’ professional insecurities, failure to consider the certification bureaucracy that would be created, and lack of evidence to support their claims. Given these findings, the paper concludes that librarian certification is unnecessary. Library professionals are encouraged to take other proactive steps to expand their …

This poster presents the findings to date from the IMLS grant “Making Space for Young Adults in Public Libraries,” which represents the first attempt to systematically examine Young Adult (YA) space practices in public libraries. We will illustrate the common themes that have emerged from the study’s three different approaches to data collection and analysis of current YA space practices: surveys to YA library patrons and adult library staff, analysis of YA space video footage, and the replication and analysis of physical YA spaces in the immersive 3D world of Second Life.

Libraries In The ‘Hood: A Social History Of The Florence And Graham Branch Libraries In The Community Of Florence-Firestone, 1912-2012, Jonathan P. Bell

Jonathan P. Bell

This study explores the history of the Florence and Graham branch libraries in the unincorporated community of Florence-Firestone in South Central Los Angeles. Two of the oldest county library branches, Florence and Graham have no published histories. Similarly, no scholarly history has been written about Florence-Firestone. Only modest historical work has been published about the County of Los Angeles Public Library system. In addressing these gaps, this thesis serves as the first historical study of the Florence and Graham libraries and the Florence-Firestone community. As the study’s literature review illustrates, this research contributes to the literature on Los Angeles urban …
