Citation Accuracy In Environmental Science Journals, Robert Lopresti

Citations in five leading environmental science journals were examined for accuracy. 24.41% of the 2,650 citations checked were found to contain errors. The largest category of errors was in the author field. Of the five journals Conservation Biology had the lowest percentage of citations with errors and Climatic Change had the highest. Of the citations with errors that could be checked in Web of Science, 18.18% of the errors caused a search for the cited article to fail. Citations containing electronic links had fewer errors than those without.

Acquired over a lifetime and representing that lifetime of knowledge, slides (used for class lectures, conferences, and public presentations) and extensive collections of print materials document the progress and results of a professor’s research. These materials are a valuable source of information for current and future generations. Now that digital images are the norm, scanning slides and print materials is a way to ensure that future students and researchers can access and use these unique materials. During spring quarter 2008, the Western Washington University (WWU) Libraries established an interactive bloglike environment called “14 Days to Have Your Say” with the intention of gathering new ideas and feedback about the libraries from the university community. The environment was developed as a fairly simple Drupal site. The project was open for direct posting from anyone on the WWU campus for 14 days, from May 7 to May 21, 2008. During this time, more than 600 posts were made from 300- plus unique users.

This prospectus seeks to explain why the University of South Florida Libraries Special & Digital Collections Department (SDC) decided during the summer of 2009 to leave DigiTool and build a new digital asset management system (DAMS). It explains what SDC holds most important in a new DAMS and how its new DAMS (CORAL) was built. It discuss CORAL’s strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats and lays the intellectual framework for possible presentations and publications regarding CORAL.

Purpose: The paper aims to describe the process of redesigning the American Cultural Studies 499 course in order to integrate information literacy (IL) and critical thinking outcomes into specific assignments. Since this research and writing proficiency course at Western Washington University have traditionally been taught by a librarian with background in the discipline, the paper also considers the challenges in communication between librarians and discipline instructors about the concepts of IL and critical thinking.

Margaret C. Norton (1891-1984) was the first state archivist of Illinois and a prominent personality in the early history of the archival profession. She made an indelible mark on the history of the early archival profession through her many written works, her work concerning the "nuts and bolts" of the archival profession, her involvement with the Society of American Archivists (SAA) and other organizations. Drawing from numerous influences she was a prolific writer, thinker and worker who held strong opinions at a time when it was not common for women to do so.
