Information Seeking Behavior Of Academic Scientists, Bradley M. Hemminger, Dihui Lu, K.T. L. Vaughan, Stephanie J. Adams

K.T. L. Vaughan

The information seeking behavior of academic scientists is being transformed by the availability of electronic resources for searching, retrieving, and reading scholarly materials. A census survey was conducted of academic science researchers at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill to capture their current information seeking behavior. Nine hundred two subjects (26%) completed responses to a 15-minute Web-based survey. The survey questions were designed to quantify the transition to electronic ...

Librarians Attitudes Toward Conferences: A Study, Robert D. Vega, Ruth S. Connell Oct 2007

Librarians Attitudes Toward Conferences: A Study, Robert D. Vega, Ruth S. Connell

Ruth S. Connell

The authors surveyed librarians to determine the reasons why they do or do not attend conferences, as well as what their attitudes were toward the various conference offerings such as roundtables, poster presentations, and the like. Librarians were queried to gather a variety of demographic and professional data. The resulting data were analyzed to find significant relationships between respondents’ demographic information and their attitudes toward specific conference offerings. The two most cited reasons given for going to conferences were professional rejuvenation and networking, both benefits not directly related to conference content. In addition to quantitative results, respondents replied to open-ended …

Technical Ebooks: A Solution Looking For A Problem, Peggy S. Cooper, Cheri Folkner, Melissa Kozel, Barbara Glackin, Richard A. Stoddart

Peggy S. Cooper

Albertsons Library at Boise State University has been slow to move into the ebook arena for a variety of reasons including the inadequacies of simultaneous user models and the uncertainty of ebook technology. However, the most significant question for BSU has been usefulness of ebooks to their patrons. Are ebooks a passing fad or are they the answer to improved access to information? In January 2006, BSU selected a small group of technical books in an electronic format via the ProQuest Safari Tech Books Online database. This session will discuss the rational behind selecting technical books as an introduction to …

Public Health Citation Patterns: An Analysis Of The American Journal Of Public Health, 2003-2005, Melissa L. Rethlefsen, Lisa C. Wallis

Lisa C. Wallis, MSPH, MS

Objectives: The research sought to determine the publication types cited most often in public health as
well as the most heavily cited journal titles. Methods: From a pool of 33,449 citations in 934 articles published in the 2003–2005 issues of American Journal of Public Health, 2 random samples were drawn: one (n =#2; 1,034) from the total set of citations and one (n #2;= 1,016) from the citations to journal articles. For each sampled citation, investigators noted publication type, publication date, uniform resource locator (URL) citation (yes/no), and, for the journal article sample, journal titles. The cited journal titles …

Library Theory And Multicultural Youth Services, Michele Gibney Sep 2007

Library Theory And Multicultural Youth Services, Michele Gibney

Michele Gibney

This paper will examine some of the global theoretical approaches in providing multicultural services to youths as well as some first-hand examples experienced in the United States by the author. In an international context the field of youth services generates significant attention due to the importance of raising the education levels of adolescents. The three theoretical models under review are urbanization, cultural planning, and social inclusion. When applied to working practices of library service, these models serve as a baseline for innovation—the resultant ideas of which this paper will connect to multicultural youth services. The paper will show that urbanization …

Hidden Under A Bushel? Evangelical Journals In An Era Of Web-Based Communication, Gregory A. Smith Aug 2007

Hidden Under A Bushel? Evangelical Journals In An Era Of Web-Based Communication, Gregory A. Smith

Gregory A. Smith

Evangelicals face significant obstacles as they seek to make their publications accessible to potential readers. This study measures the extent to which evangelical scholarly journals have made their contents available in electronic form. Thirty-five journals--all active, refereed, evangelical in perspective, and published in English--were chosen for analysis. Two serials management tools and individual journal Web sites provided data regarding electronic accessibility. Twenty-six of the journals are available in some electronic form--most commonly in one or more aggregated databases. Evangelical information professionals could play a significant role in helping to make additional evangelical journal content available electronically.

Research Using Primary Sources (Poster Session), Joanne Archer, Ann Hanlon, Jennie Levine Jul 2007

Research Using Primary Sources (Poster Session), Joanne Archer, Ann Hanlon, Jennie Levine

Ann Hanlon

The use of primary source materials poses a unique challenge to researchers, requiring the acquisition of specialized skills. Using an online research guide entitled "Research Using Primary Sources" (http://www.lib.umd.edu/special/research/) as a starting point, we tested 23 undergraduate and graduate students to assess how well they understood how to find and use special collection materials. The study goes beyond questions of navigability towards a deeper understanding of research behaviors. The initial results indicate that undergraduate, and even graduate, researchers often overcomplicate their search strategies based on behaviors learned for traditional library research. Expectations based on past experiences play a significant role …

Student Users Of Archives: An Analysis Of Recent Data, Erin Passehl, Morgan Daniels

Erin Passehl Stoddart

We report the findings of 16 student interviews conducted at a large public university in fall 2005 as part of the research project "Developing Archival Metrics in College and University Archives and Special Collections." Fourteen archivists and twelve professors from North American academic institutions were also interviewed, in order to determine what aspects of archival interactions these groups found important to measure. This presentation considered how do students, professors, and archivists perceive different aspects of archival service and how would they like to see these evaluated?

Revolutionizing Processing Methods: A Review Of Greene And Meissner, Michele Gibney Jul 2007

Revolutionizing Processing Methods: A Review Of Greene And Meissner, Michele Gibney

Michele Gibney

The paper by Mark A. Greene and Dennis Meissner outlines a problem which is currently occurring in archives across the country as well as the world. They state the case that processing collections to the item level is creating enormous backloads which are unprocessed. So much time is spent on refoldering, removing staples, and documenting each item in a collection that there is no time to actually process the majority of an archives’ holdings. Greene and Meissner conducted a survey and compared responses from 100 respondents in order to compile a well-researched report on how much time, money, and resources …

Cyberspace Publishing, Thomas Bacher Jun 2007

Cyberspace Publishing, Thomas Bacher

Thomas Bacher

This year’s forum – comprising comments by directors at Georgetown University Press, Johns Hopkins University Press, University of Massachusetts Press, Oxford University Press, and Purdue University Press – is not so very different, though it leans more in the direction of common than of different themes. To no one’s surprise matters digital reign supreme, followed closely by open access and partnering with libraries in creating new opportunities. With regard to the digital, the common thread seems to be not the demise of the printed book – the familiar refrain of doom mongers in recent years – but rather the opportunities …

Big Opportunities In Access To “Small Science” Data, Harlan Onsrud, James Campbell Jun 2007

Big Opportunities In Access To “Small Science” Data, Harlan Onsrud, James Campbell

Harlan J Onsrud

A distributed infrastructure that would enable those who wish to do so to contribute their scientific or technical data to a universal digital commons could allow such data to be more readily preserved and accessible among disciplinary domains. Five critical issues that must be addressed in developing an efficient and effective data commons infrastructure are described. We conclude that creation of a distributed infrastructure meeting the critical criteria and deployable throughout the networked university library community is practically achievable.

Another Look At African Cultures Through Picture Books, Dorothy N. Bowen May 2007

Another Look At African Cultures Through Picture Books, Dorothy N. Bowen

Dorothy N. Bowen

I realized how difficult it is to describe what life is like for a child growing up in Africa when I was asked to make a presentation to two 6th grade classes. In the course of the presentation, I said, "Africa is not a country:' I had to smile to myself as I saw the shocked look on the face of a little girl sitting right in front of me. Her mouth dropped open and I knew that she thought I had made a very great error.

Atg Interviews Don Beagle (Library Director, Belmont Abbey College, Belmont, Nc), Barbara Tierney May 2007

Atg Interviews Don Beagle (Library Director, Belmont Abbey College, Belmont, Nc), Barbara Tierney

Barbara Tierney

Donald Beagle is frequently referred to as the "Father of the Information Commons."

Interview questions asked:

In talking with longtime IC managers, certain “commons threads” or “lessons learned” emerge, as you know. What are your observations about these with regard to IC’s going into their second iteration, and can these threads and lessons be found in the Handbook?

What is your current thinking about the 3 levels of the Commons?

Describe how a 'cutting edge' IC might look/function 5 years down the road.

How do you envision the role of an "IC Librarian" (with regard to academic faculty, students) …

The Prevalence Of Government Information On High School Library And Media Center Websites, Doug Way May 2007

The Prevalence Of Government Information On High School Library And Media Center Websites, Doug Way

Doug Way

In 1997 President Clinton directed federal agencies to develop websites and Internet resources that would serve as “tool(s) for teaching and learning.” The ten years since then have seen an explosion in the amount of government information available to students and educators. Today there are thousands of government websites that specifically target these groups. In addition, over 90 percent of government publications distributed through the Federal Depository Library Program are available on the Internet, making those titles once out of the reach of school libraries just a click away at no cost. To see how school libraries are taking advantage …

The Santa Barbara Public Library: History And Thematic Identifications, Michele Gibney May 2007

The Santa Barbara Public Library: History And Thematic Identifications, Michele Gibney

Michele Gibney

The paper describes the history of the public library in Santa Barbara from 1870 to 1926 while taking into account two of the thematic underpinnings of the American library tradition: women in the profession and the importance of books and libraries in the community. It is divided into three sections including, the importance of books and libraries, women librarianship, and the history of the Santa Barbara Public Library. The library’s ideology and history espouses the themes inherent in American library history. At the same time, some of the qualities of Santa Barbara’s library contradict prevalent ideas of the times—especially in …

Passport To Information Day.Pdf, Lia Hemphill, Elena Soltau

Elena Soltau

“If you build it, they will come” (Frankish & Robinson, 1989) was a powerful motivation for transforming an Iowa cornfield into a baseball diamond, but does it apply to librarians when faced with purchasing new information resources? What happens if you buy it and no one comes? This is precisely the dilemma many libraries face when purchasing new resources. Librarians painstakingly select the best resources for their users, despite overcoming budget constraints, only to have the usage statistics show that these resources are continually underutilized. This issue has mystified librarians for years. How can a library effectively market its electronic …

Fixing Fair Use, Michael W. Carroll Mar 2007

Fixing Fair Use, Michael W. Carroll

Michael W. Carroll

The fair use doctrine in copyright law balances expressive freedoms by permitting one to use another's copyrighted expression under certain circumstances. The doctrine's extreme context-sensitivity renders it of little value to those who require reasonable ex ante certainty about the legality of a proposed use. In this Article, Professor Carroll advances a legislative proposal to create a Fair Use Board in the U.S. Copyright Office that would have power to declare a proposed use of another's copyrighted work to be a fair use. Like a private letter ruling from the IRS or a “no action” letter from the SEC, a …
