Librarian Residency Programs: A Vital Solution For Increasing Representation In Academic Libraries, Aisha Johnson Phd, Alexandra Brinson, Kayleah Brown, Karen Manning, Estella Richardson

Georgia Library Quarterly

According to ALA’s 2017 demographic study, the profession is nearly completely White while society consists of a variety of cultures and communities. The lack of representation is a matter of exposure, strategic and diverse recruitment, and retention of professionals of color as well as those belonging to marginalized communities. Recruitment and retention are key, but we must recognize that retention is successful when focused on a person's development through mentoring, coaching, and other targeted measures like residency programs. This paper discusses the benefits of residency and fellowship programs as a retention tool when implemented with intention and authenticity.

Four Weeks In Normandy: A Reference Librarian In France, Carley Knight

The Southeastern Librarian

In the fall of 2016, I sent off a short email to the University of Caen-Normandy requesting an informal internship in their library over the summer. It was inconceivable that I would find something so promptly, but in June of 2017 I was there. In past years I had looked to see what opportunities were available to librarians, and short of a Fulbright program I could find very little. It was at that point that I decided to try a more DIY approach. Before becoming a reference librarian at Jacksonville State University in Alabama, I studied French. As a librarian, …

Auburn University at Montgomery (AUM) is a regional university located in Montgomery, Alabama. The enrollment consists of 3,990 FTE undergraduate and graduate students (Auburn University at Montgomery, 2017). The library at AUM holds nearly 600,000 volumes, excluding government documents, along with more than 100 journal databases, which support student and faculty research. Over the past five years, the materials budget has decreased more than 30%, requiring collection reductions. Initial analysis determined that in addition to other items, one of the recommended products for elimination was the American Council of Learned Societies (ACLS) Humanities E-Book project.

Proud To Be A Librarian, Ying Chen

The Southeastern Librarian

Years have passed since that day. I left the college and assumed a new position in a different city. Yet the memory of his visit and our conversation replays in my mind often. This experience granted me a better understanding of my job: I am not just an information keeper, I am a life transformer. And so are you. Be proud to be a librarian!

Playing Well With Others: Integrating Your Institutional Repository With Third-Party Products, Ashley D. Lowery, Jeb Barger

Digital Commons Southeastern User Group 2016

Institutional repositories are using third-party products to entice more users and contributors. Most repositories have some sort of integration, even if it is simply embedding a YouTube video. Over the last two years, Zach S. Henderson Library has worked with the Office of Research and Economic Development to provide a robust set of services for their faculty by integrating multiple products. While Zach S. Henderson Library provides Digital Commons@Georgia Southern and its SelectedWorks profiles, the Office of Research and Economic Development sponsors PlumX Metrics and the Expertise Search. The Expertise Search is a tool for users to find faculty members …

The Embedded Library: Beyond The Course Connection, Sims Kline

The Southeastern Librarian

Several hundred articles have been published in the last few years on the role of the “embedded librarian” and the nature of “embedded librarianship” as well as books on the subject, e.g. Embedded Librarianship: What Every Academic Librarian Should Know (Daughtery & Russo, 2013). “The Art and Environment of Embedded Librarianship” (Saunders & Taylor, 2014) is a good example of an article examining the librarian’s role in a specific course. “Embedded librarianship” has been established as a subject heading in Library and Information Science Abstracts.

It's So Boring: Improving Library Orientation Sessions For First-Year Students, Melissa Dennis, Ashely S. Dees

The Southeastern Librarian

Instruction librarians sometimes face challenges in planning and implementing successful one-shot sessions for students. Librarians understand the strain of assessing student learning for the university as well as the desire to teach every student important information literacy skills. The difficulties are managing limited time, uncontrollable space, faculty collaboration, and student motivation in order to develop and achieve class goals. There are a variety of factors that can lead to student boredom or frustration with the library. Library layout can lead to a potentially frustrating first impression with students because of their unfamiliarity with the physical space, library classification system, and …

I Feel The Need To Weed!: Maintaining An E-Book Collection, Jennifer Culley

The Southeastern Librarian

Libraries and library collections are evolving. Formats are changing as technology advances, and physical libraries are expanding into an ever increasing digital world. Acquiring more materials in several different formats, including electronic brings on the issue of what to do with it all. Anyone, or any entity, that collects books in print or electronic format will eventually come to the realization that their space is finite. In order to acquire new materials they must either expand their space or do that horrible "four letter word"... weed. The word itself sends shivers down the backs of librarians everywhere. How can any …
