Book Donations: Trash Or Treasure?, Bradley P. Tolppanen, Janice Derr

Bradley P. Tolppanen

Book donations are a mainstay of collection building. Gifts can range in scope from a few items dropped off by a patron to a large donation that requires a team of people to retrieve. The items themselves may also vary from the kind you want to send out a press release praising to the kind you want to quietly put in the book sale pile. Receiving donations can be considered either an exceptional tool for developing the collection or a time-consuming reallocation of library resources that could be spent ordering and processing new materials. This poster session will consider the …

Title of poster session: I Want That! Letting Patrons Request On-Order MaterialsBooth Library at Eastern Illinois University has traditionally displayed bibliographic records in its online catalog for materials that are in the acquisition and cataloging process, resulting in patrons often discovering desirable materials that are not yet available. To speed these materials through the acquisition and cataloging processes and into the hands of eager users, we designed a web link in each bibliographic record that patrons can use to request notification when the item is available for use. The technology is simple, the workflow manageable, and the good will …

Xerxes At Uw-Madison, Todd Bruns

Todd A. Bruns

Since implementing MetaLib in 2005, UW-Madison Libraries have focused on continual improvements in resource discovery. The most recent project for improving user access was the acquisition of Xerxes software, an open-source interface for MetaLib. This presentation describes the decision for acquiring Xerxes and the process of implementation at the UW-Madison campus, including UW-Madison additions to Xerxes such as a "value added" area which highlights resources/librarians and programming code that improves the Xerxes "By Title" search.

The presentation was given using Apple Keynote software. This is a PDF of the slides.

Adult e-book reader ownership doubled in the United States between November 2010 and May 2011 from 6% to 12%, according to a June 2011 Pew Internet & American Life Project survey. Librarians understand the need to provide the material their patrons want via the medium their patrons desire. The e-book medium, however, is relatively new, and it is taking librarians and publishers time and practice to understand how to incorporate e-books into library collections.

Review Of Open Access: What You Need To Know Now, Kirstin Duffin

Kirstin Duffin

The scholarly publishing crisis is by no means a new concept. The rising cost of journals has been pricing libraries out of subscriptions for years now. This crunch on libraries’ acquisitions budgets has led many people to rethink the traditional publishing model. Enter the open access (OA) movement. Use of the term “open access” dates back almost a decade, but the field continues to evolve. Now retired, Crawford was a senior analyst at Research …
