Mentoring In The Library With Emphasis In Cataloging, Felipe E. Tan

Because of the ever changing information management environment, library employees need and benefit from mentoring. This article focuses on mentoring in cataloging. The three elements of effective mentoring are mentor expertise, a mentoring plan, and a good working relationship between mentor and mentee. Strategies are discussed and experiences shared.

The Center for Adventist Research (CAR), an Andrews University and General Conference of Seventh-day Adventist organization, seeks to promote an understanding and appreciation of the heritage and mission of the Seventh-day Adventist Church (SDA). It combines the resources of the James White Library’s Adventist Heritage Center and the Ellen G. White Estate Branch Office to provide the most extensive collection of Adventist-related resources in the world, both physically and digitally. An introduction to the background, collections, and activities of CAR is presented. Of particular interest are the digitization projects.

A Festschrift style publication would provide a venue for SDA Librarians to publish research and develop a body of professional literature that addresses the needs of SDA libraries and librarians. It is proposed because it does not involve specific time dead- lines and allows for short-term commitments for editorial leadership. It is also an accepted method of acknowledging and recognizing esteemed colleagues.

James White Library celebrated its 75th anniversary with a series of activities in the year 2012-2013, starting with the alumni homecoming in 2012 and projecting its capstone event during the alumni homecoming in 2013. The activities focused on how the library, first as a small brick building in 1937 filled with print resources, progressed to its current building with its technological emphasis. Landmarks through the years include the naming of the building in 1937, the construction of a new facility in 1962, the addition in 1976, the replacement of the card catalog with an online catalog in 1992, and the …

Fifty years ago, prior to the digital revolution, library instruction consisted of a knowledgeable librarian guiding students through the various classes of documents, with examples of recognized authorities. Each bibliographic tool was handcrafted by competent individuals, published by reputable publishers, and recommended by disciplinary practitioners. While working through these various tools was time consuming, and getting access to materials not held locally often proved slow, the student researcher could reasonably assume the sincerity and integrity of the sources. With the digital revolution, much has changed. Now, instead of bibliographic instruction, librarians engage in “information literacy”(IL) training. Rather than point students …

Arminius differed from the Calvinism he debated in the causal role of information in bringing a person to salvation. This accounts for the distinction between an Adventist Philosophy of Education, following Arminius, in which the outcome of education is to lead the student to a saving relationship with God, a bottom-up eternal salvation perspective. A Calvinist Philosophy of Education, on the other hand, suggests that the outcome of education is to change society, a top-down, temporal perspective. Therefore, it is necessary for the Adventist Church to assume a more intentional role in providing quality information sources to emerging institutions training …
