Library Scholarship
In April 2024, three Binghamton University Librarians presented at a conference in Newry, Northern Ireland (CILIP/LAI Joint Conference). They will present on how global libraries in a regional context can inform librarianship across divides. People, places, and things may be different but library goals and functions are the same wherever you go. They will share their experiences presenting and the connections they made.

Information literacy is more important than ever as students’ information sources rapidly expand and change. Fortunately, Messiah has numerous resources to support instructors and students in cutting through the clutter and improving writing. In this workshop we will discuss those supports as well as resources that can be applied to a wide array of writing assignments. Particularly, ways to scaffold information literacy initiatives with the help of online and library based tools. This workshop is facilitated by Brooke Dunbar-Treadwell, Director of Writing and Senior Lecturer of English and Beth Transue, Information Literacy Librarian.

During 2020-21 two business faculty from different institutions together with OER librarians, undergraduate students, and graduate assistants conspired to create a faculty-access-only test bank aligned to senior undergraduate-level open textbook, Strategic Management (2020) and AACSB Standards. Test bank development followed instructional and ethical practices for non-disposable assignments including faculty development of assignments, student ownership of student work, student “opt in” to go public, choice of no or some student attribution, financial incentives for various project participants, project MOUs, professional copyediting, and public release to vetted requestors. This presentation describes our respective motivations, process, how we found one another, why the …

Building Applications: Real World Experience For Students, Juan Denzer
Building Applications: Real World Experience For Students, Juan Denzer
Upstate New York Science Librarians Conference
Academic libraries are the most diverse departments on campus. Librarians offer knowledge from various disciplines. Students not only benefit from this knowledge. They can gain real world experience from project collaboration with librarians. One way to reach out to students of computer science and engineering is to create a projects that centers on an application for libraries. This could be an internal application or open application for the library community. This presentation will discuss how one librarian has brought forward these real world projects. That has given students experience that allowed them to successfully gain employment in their fields. Attendees …

A library construction project led our library’s Science & Engineering Department to take on a massive evaluation of the entire science print collection and reduce the collection footprint by at least 36% within a 12 month period. In order to improve access, reduce the footprint, strengthen the robustness of our collection, and complete the project in an effective and timely manner, a methodology of how to choose, select, evaluate, and move the entire collection of over 360,000 items had to be established and vetted. A plan was developed between the library’s Science & Engineering Department and teams from collection development, …

Every Fall, Cornell’s Mann Library holds a Local Food & Fiber Fair bringing together farmers and artisans from the local community and students, faculty and staff in the library lobby. In this talk, we will discuss efforts to transform this annual community festival from a mere transactional market to an experiential learning fair. By asking that all vendors incorporate an educational demonstration with their booth, the fair becomes a collection of active workshops where visitors can learn to spin wool, compost with worms, pickle produce, and inoculate logs while also supporting local merchants. Although librarians hosted one informational booth complete …

Enabling Undergraduates To Begin Research Projects At The University Of Rochester, Sue Cardinal
Upstate New York Science Librarians Conference
What skills and network do undergraduates need to successfully join a research collaboration that matches their abilities and interests? During the 2015-16 academic year, librarians at the University of Rochester River Campus Libraries prototyped and refined Taking Control of Your Research Path, an eight-week/one-hour-per-week workshop. This workshop series covered a process for success: identifying one's own research interests, learning about the work of researchers and research groups, building skills in elevator pitches and informational interviewing, networking with peers advisors and finally interviewing with potential research groups. The Libraries can't provide a full perspective on undergraduate research alone. Experts across the …

Do You Know What They Don’T Know? : How Students Conduct Research, Peggy L. Nuhn, Min Tong
Georgia International Conference on Information Literacy
When developing student research assignments, many faculty may make the assumption that the current generation of computer-savvy students will intuitively determine how to effectively use library resources, and incorporate that information into a thoughtful and properly cited research paper -- after all, students frequently express a high level of confidence in their research abilities. But is this realistic? Do students understand the difference between a keyword and a subject search and how that understanding can help them? Do students really understand that research is a process rather than a scavenger hunt?
Any faculty member who has received student research papers …

Training The Trainers: Faculty Development Meets Information Literacy, Susan Archambault, Elisa Acosta
LMU Librarian Publications & Presentations
Librarian and faculty collaborations are the most essential component of any successful information literacy program. How can librarians entice faculty to collaborate? A wide range of outreach strategies have been chronicled in the literature, including brown bag lunch discussions, faculty focus groups, librarian-faculty grants, librarian participation in faculty governance, and workshops. Collaboration can also occur as a result of accreditation or program review requirements. This session will focus on the method of hosting “train the trainer” workshops to present key information literacy concepts to faculty and stimulate ideas for embedding information literacy into the classroom. We will present a broad …

Learn specific strategies used by librarians in a variety of roles to successfully develop coherent, campus-wide scholarly communications and information literacy initiatives. Our goal is to expand the scope and culture of collaboration around scholarly communication activities using information literacy as a lens through which to view our outreach, education and advocacy activities. Programmatic efforts to change undergraduate education, instructional activities for the classroom, and new models and roles for subject liaisons will be presented.

Library-based publishing services are increasingly common as libraries seek to provide alternatives for the dissemination of scholarly and creative work. Connecting these services to the educational mission of libraries' institutions is vital for publishing programs' success and sustainability. This panel of librarians and faculty from liberal arts colleges will discuss the educative and advocacy roles that their library publishing programs have developed, and suggest best practices for librarians wishing to implement their own publishing programs.

Libraries are forming strategic partnerships on and off campus - with faculty, research institutes, community organizations, and scholarly associations. Repositories are playing a key role in facilitating these new relationships by enabling libraries to offer new and valuable services to these constituencies. This presentation describes the ways that the Sturgis Library at Kennesaw State University has used both journal and conference publishing services to foster these partnerships.

Libraries are never short on innovation, especially when budgets are lean. How can staff stay on top of the latest library trends, and empower individuals to think “lean and mean” when times demand creativity? One solution, developed in Idaho during a summit on developing services for digital natives, was to create a Special Projects Library Action Team (SPLAT). SPLAT members act in the crow’s nest capacity of technological change. They search and share innovative ideas, leads on projects, and experiment in social media statewide; vet ideas; and bring ideas back to the local level. Supported by the Idaho Commission for …

Libraries face shrinking budgets, increased use, and user demand for trending resources. This makes it difficult for librarians to find the time to keep up with innovative technological tools and social media (SM) developments. SPLAT (Special Projects Library Action Team) offers up a new model for enhancing library reference services. SPLAT is supported by the Idaho Commission for Libraries (ICFL), the state agency responsible for assisting libraries. The members of SPLAT are innovation representatives, comprised of library staff who search and experiment with SM trends and online tools, learn, and share the best ways to integrate them into the reference …
