Library mentoring programs can impact both experienced and new librarians.  While many librarians have benefited both personally and professionally from mentoring relationships, some argue that the next generation of librarians may not respond to typical traditional or classic mentoring techniques.  As a millennial who has had many in-depth discussions on this topic, the author believes that many of the mentoring tools that worked so well in the past do not seem to resonate with millennial librarians today.  For example, the baby-boom generation may have had one or two separate mentoring relationships throughout their career.  The millennial generation, however, may respond …

How can an "old space" like Special Collections be repurposed to meet evolving information literacy learning goals? This presentation will address ways in which a traditional library space can be reimagined as a place to engage students in affective learning at the beginning of the research process. Presentation at the ACRL New England Chapter annual conference, 13 May 2011 with with Marion Muskiewicz (UMass Lowell) and Elizabeth Winiarz (UMass Dartmouth) on the inception and collaborative creation of an annual "boot camp" for science librarians. This inexpensive and intensive program covers 3 science subjects over 2.5 days to bring librarians up to speed on these topics. Usually, one faculty member gives an overview of the field, and another describes a current research area. This event also provides librarians with an informal way to network and enjoy each other's company.

The stereotypical image of librarians is a big obstacle in recruiting new people to the profession. Instead of simply rehashing the same negative media portrayals, this presentation explains how to change the public perception of librarians using techniques developed by nurses - a parallel profession with parallel problems.
