The United Kingdom Insurance Act 2015 entered into force on 12 August 2016. It introduced major changes to some provisions of the Marine Insurance Act 1906 which has been the principal model for establishing marine insurance law and practice not only in common law jurisdictions, but also in some civil law countries. The main areas of change are the duty of fair presentation, warranties, insurer’s remedies for fraudulent claims and damages for the late payment of claims. This thesis argues that Nigeria can adapt its tax system for better gain from investment and other taxation. It outlines the foundation for a good tax policy, and explores initiatives by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD and the United Nations (UN) regarding harmful tax practices and tax incentives. Their recommendations and those of scholars, conclude that tax incentives are ineffective in attracting foreign direct investment, may result in taxpayer abuse, and erode the revenue base of capital importing countries like Nigeria. With Internet usage on the rise, it is important for India to establish an effective regulatory regime to combat piracy and mass copyright infringement online. This thesis argues that, in the face of unique legal and cultural challenges specific to India, present laws in the country have failed to do so. Infectious diseases have recently found renewed significance in Canadian scholarship, with a corresponding increased interest in Canada's overall preparedness, including legal preparedness, to combat infectious disease emergencies. Nearly every Canadian province has emergency legislation containing a "basket clause" - a provision which, for the duration of an emergency, authorizes a decision maker to take 'all necessary measures' to defeat it. This thesis presents a history of child protection law and jurisprudence in Nova Scotia. The thesis begins by examining the development of the first child protection statute in Canada, the Nova Scotia Prevention and Punishment of Wrongs to Children Act in 1882. The Act was developed amidst a climate of reform in late-19th century Halifax, at the urging of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. The debate over how to regulate sex work in Canada has long occupied courts, governments, policymakers, sex workers and activists. In the aftermath of the Supreme Court decision in Bedford v Canada and the enactment of the constitutionally suspect Protection of Communities and Exploited Persons Act, this thesis examines municipal law's potential role in regulating brothels. Municipalities already grant licenses to adult service providers, the licensing of brothels is a natural extension of their powers. Corruption is a significant problem around the world. Large-scale public works projects are especially prone to corruption. Much international effort has been devoted to fighting corruption, but the impact of these efforts is debatable. Public-sector procurement in the Canadian province of Quebec has, since 2009, been beset by scandal. After defeat of the Liberal government in 2012, the first bill introduced by the new Parti Québécois government was an anti-corruption measure. The HIV/AIDS epidemic is a devastating medical, social and economic problem in many developing countries. Presently, the only therapeutic remedies for the disease are antiretroviral drugs, which do not cure HIV/AIDS but are effective in restoring the health of people living with HIV/AIDS. Unfortunately, these drugs are unavailable to many people living with the disease in developing countries. This has been attributed to the exorbitant prices resulting from the patent rights of multinational pharmaceutical companies over the drugs.
